The Important Role of Education in the Development of Youth in Cambodia.

Education is one of the fundamental factors of development. Every nation can attain sustainable

economic development if each puts substantial investment in human capital. There are no differences

with Cambodian society. It is essential that this undeveloped kingdom must consolidate education on

youth development in order to enrich their human resources.

Prior to the explanation of the topic, the term youth development should be well understood. In

my view, development of youth refers exposing youth to challenges, plus helping them to reveal their

potential. Those actions do not mean only classroom-learning but also involving youth in community

works, volunteerism and leadership positions. These outside-class activities will equip them with

necessary skills such as leadership, team working, public speaking, problem solving and critical

thinking.

There are several reasons why Cambodia needs to focus on youth development. For one reason,

Cambodian is among the least developed countries. If one studies closely, he can see that there is a

broad gap between the economic classes, with more than 50 percent of the population living in poverty.

The rich accumulate their wealth daily while the poor are getting poorer. With young people are the

back bone to Cambodia, youth development is the only solution to free people from poverty. For

instance, when youth receive well education, they will become high-skill workers and productive

workforces hereby earning more salaries, sending their children to school, and escaping from poverty

circle as a result. Some may start doing businesses and create jobs for other villagers. Thus, by

advancing abilities of young people, it will improve their life quality and lead to broad social benefits.

Secondly, young people will be conscious and have braveness to participate in civic activities

such as voting. They learn the essential of voting and know whom to vote for. People without

education do not comprehend how to make their decision to vote for a specific party over the other.

Thirdly, they become better citizens. Education transforms people to be mindful of the socio-

economic condition. They, for instance, begin to change their actions ranging from a small simple thing

like taking a bus to work instead of using car in order to promote green environment or teaching their

children to be good and responsible citizens by throwing trash into the bin. People who are not

educated may not feel any obligations toward environmental issues.

Furthermore, when a country does not provide education to youths, they would face issues

include: youths being engaged in drug; higher unemployment rate, youth being restrained from being

independent and beneficial citizens; and increase in youth crime and degenerate behavior. As a

consequence, people will live in hardship and the society will turn unsafe and insecure. The country,

then, might experience a sharp drop in the rate of investments and improvement progress.

In conclusion, education plays three significant roles in the development of youths. Education

builds human resources that leads to promote securing economic and social progress, improve income

distribution, and lift active youth’s involvement in civic programs and responsible-and-respectful

manners. Based on these reasons, we can state that education holds a crucial part in contributing in the

growth of Cambodia. Therefore I recommend to all the people especially students to use their time

effectively by focusing on learning and do more researches in order to expand knowledge, grab new

skills and languages, and stay competitive in this globalized world.
