The factors young people have little leisure time and under a lot of pressure to
work hard in their studies
To compare now and the past, the young people nowadays are more
capable and determine in terms of studying. Their weekends are no longer
being filled with family activities but instead, “I am busy” or “I still have some
work to complete” sentences are coming out from their mouth. The fact that
the youth have little leisure time, they are also under a lot of pressure in order
to work hard in their studies. Therefore, the question is, what are the factors
that make the youth to behave in such way? This is all because of peer
pressure, parental expectation and heavy education system.
Peer pressure plays a huge role in this situation. To start off, peer
pressure means the pressure that the individual may received from the group
to think, feel and behave in certain ways whether they want to or not. An
individual may behave and study really hard just because they want to fit in
into the particular group. They do not want to score poorly in studies as they
do not want to be judged and left out by their group of friends. Even though
some individual may not doing good in studies but it seems that they have to
spend time less for themselves and keep catching up with other cliques. Next,
studies can be seen as a competition among the peers. One may feel anxious
and challenged when every time the other friends score higher marks than
them. Uslu, M. (2013) did point out that there is a relationship between self-
esteem and peer pressure among adolescents especially in school. In his
findings, it can be seen that mostly female’s youth are lack of self-esteem due
to the peer pressure. This might as well explain why the youth preferably to
have little leisure time and spend most of their days to study.
Moving on, parental expectation also the reason why the youth are
always under pressure. This is because parents expect that their children’s
physical abilities are fit enough. They assure that their children can burn the
midnight oil and sacrifice most of their life just to study. That is some little
things that parents always forget, that the children are just human like them
too. The children still need some rest and play in order to have a stable life.
Then, the parents always believe that the children can do so much better than
them in the past. However, they tend to forget that education 10 years back
and now are vary in so many ways. The struggle they had before are different
of what the children is having now. In fact, KILDAN, A. (2013) observed that
the parents’ expectation levels even from pre-school education in the
dimension of pedagogical quality and in terms of physical quality according to
variable of educational background. As the education level of the parents
increases, their expectations even from the pre-school education also
increase. This situation actually causes the children to be more under
pressured and led to be them to have less time to play and focus on studies
instead.
In addition, the heavy education system that is being conducted in
school nowadays will cause the youth to have less leisure time and be under
pressured. Education is changing everyday and most of the time, it become
more challenging. As example, Eric, A. (2012) claims that nobody seems to
please with China’s educational system. This is because the system
overemphasis on rote memorization, a top-down instructional style that
crushes individuality and near-total reliance on exams to evaluate progress.
From that, we can see that the youth might have spend their days by
memorizing the notes and information given from the teachers instead of
making them to understand the concept. Since the education system are
more to daily rehearse, some teachers just simply give them a pile of
homework to do at home. Not enough being burden to memorize the notes,
now the students have to complete the homework. Without doubt, the youth
will have no time to spend for themselves and stressing out to finish the work
instead.
In conclusion, peer pressure, parental expectation and heavy
education system are really causing the youth to have less time for
themselves and always under pressure. In a long run, this matter can be
really crucial to the extent the relationship between the youth and family is
getting restricted, as well as health condition of the children will be very
concerning. With no rest and working hard too much in studies might cause
the children fall into a deep depression and might lead to emotional anxiety or
suicidal. Therefore, the parents and the teachers must aware of this matter
seriously.
