Challenges & Risks

• Timescales and potential bottlenecks• Performance & Design choices• Cost overrun• Particulate control & cleanliness• Interfaces & communication with stakeholders• Late deliveries to STFC Daresbury Laboratory

– Magnets (IKC)– BPMs (IKC)– STFC procurement

• Reliability

Page 12: ESS WP 12 Project Management & Capabilities Overview Neil Bliss Projects & Mechanical Engineering Group Leader ESS PDR, Lund, 10 th November 2015

Risk Mitigation

• Timescales– Careful Planning– Scheduling regular reviews with ESS– Change control documentation implementation– Monitoring and controlling progress against milestones and deliverables– Increased staffing for peak loading using contractors

• Performance & Design choices– Draw on previous experience– Button BPMs or Striplines– Welded or flanged joints– Impact of pulsed magnets on particulates– Prototypes are essential

• Cost Overrun– Value Management– Monitoring spend & forecast against estimate monthly

Page 13: ESS WP 12 Project Management & Capabilities Overview Neil Bliss Projects & Mechanical Engineering Group Leader ESS PDR, Lund, 10 th November 2015

Risk Mitigation

• Particulate Control & Cleanliness– Previous Experience, ALICE, DICC etc.– Agree Procedures & Processes– Develop Stringent Quality Assurance within BSI 9001:2008 Quality Control

• Interfaces & Communication with stakeholders– STFC would like to be included in related ESS / IKC design reviews– Close contact with ESS & IKC– History & Audit trial within the BSI 9001:2008 Quality Control

• Late deliveries to STFC Daresbury Laboratory– Similar mitigations as listed in timescales on the previous slide– Design so that magnets can be fitted after vacuum system is pumping.

• Reliability– Careful equipment and techniques selection– Reduce possibility for leaks and contamination by established UHV design,

handling and processing practise

Conclusions

• Experienced staff are available• Unique facilities and assembly areas are already in place• Proven track record of delivering accelerator modules to

International projects• Project Management & Quality Assurance within a

internationally recognised standard is in place since 2000
