1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. PURPOSE

The PERASPERA OG1 activity is devoted to the design of a Robot Control Operating

Software (RCOS) that can provide adequate features and performance with space-grade

Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) properties. The goal of the

ESROCOS project is to provide an open source framework which can assist in the

development of flight software for space robots. By providing an open standard which can

be used by research labs and industry, it is expected that the Technology Readiness Level

(TRL) can be raised more efficiently, and vendor lock-in through proprietary environments

can be reduced. Current state-of-the-art robotic frameworks are already addressing

some of these key aspects, but mostly fail to deliver the degree of quality expected in the

space environment. In the industrial robotics world, manufacturers of robots realise their

RCOS by complementing commercial real-time operating systems, with proprietary

libraries implementing the extra functions.

This document describes the dissemination actions that have been conducted for the

ESROCOS project. We present the events, communication means and all channels that

were used to promote the project and to disseminate its concepts and results to external

audiences.

1.2. SCOPE

4. PROJECT OVERVIEW

ESROCOS is a framework for developing robot control software applications. It includes

a set of tools that support different aspects of the development process, from

architectural design to deployment and validation. In addition, it provides a set of core

functions that are often used in robotics or space applications.

Figure 4-1: Overview of the components of ESROCOS

The ESROCOS framework is intended to support the development of software following

the ECSS standards. It does not by itself cover all the development phases and verification

steps, but it facilitates certain activities and ensures that the software built can be made

compatible with the RAMS requirements of critical systems.

Figure 4-1 summarizes the main elements of the ESROCOS framework. At the top of the

figure there are tools for robots, software and failure modelling. These are supported by

the common data types for component interfacing, and basic libraries for robotics

functions, logging and TM/TC. The middleware layer allows for the management and

communication of software components at runtime. A mixed criticality layer is added to

isolate application components at runtime. Finally, the applications may run on three

environments according to the desired software quality level: laboratory, high reliability

and space quality.

The boxes on the sides of the figure represent orthogonal concerns. Firstly, ESROCOS

integrates with third-party tools and frameworks to support different activities and

facilitate the reuse of existing code. Secondly, ESROCOS supports the configuration and

deployment of complex applications via continuous integration. Finally, the figure

highlights that ESROCOS is open-source and relies on non-proprietary technologies in

order to encourage usage and contributions from the community.

4.1. DISSEMINATION OBJECTIVES

The major objective of the WP 6 “Dissemination and Exploitation” is to (a) effectively and

efficiently raise awareness and understanding of the project ESROCOS, from the concept

to the final results, (b) to maximize the influence of the project and (c) to promote

adoption/exploitation of the project results. Further, the objectives include the production

of outreach material, which can be published in various media.

The following audience groups are taken into account as target audiences for the

dissemination activities in ESROCOS:

Internal audience: The members of the project consortium need to stay well

informed about all aspects of the progress of the project to allow seamless and

productive work for all partners.

Related Projects: Sharing project results with coordinators and key actors of

PERASPERA OGs, ensures visibility and uptake of results, and provide

opportunities to receive feedback, share experiences and discuss joint problems

and issues.

External stakeholders: European industrial and research organisations working

on space robotics technologies or safety critical system in terrestrial applications.

By getting in contact with this group we want to spread knowledge about the

project and its ideas but also gain additional needs and requirements for a space

robotics RCOS.

General Public: The consortium strongly believes that the general public has a

genuine interest in robotics and, specifically, in space activities. This has to be

further exploited in order to create a closer relationship between European citizens

and the technological capabilities in space within Europe, by increasing interest in

space robotics in the European society.

5. DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES

5.1. DISSEMINATION TOOLS

A number of different dissemination tools and actions where produced throughout the

ESROCOS project. The purpose of the tool is to support the communication and promotion

of the project to the targeted audiences during the course and after the project. This

chapter describes the most important tools created and used in the project.

5.1.1. LOGO

The use of a project logo helps creating a well-defined graphical identify and increases

recognition factor of the project. A common project logo (cf. Figure 4-1) was created. The

logo was used for all materials created for the dissemination of ESROCOS.

Figure 5-1: ESROCOS project logo

5.1.2. PROJECT WEBSITE

A website for the ESROCOS project was created under the URL http://www.h2020-

esrocos.eu/. The website contains general information about the project such as

information about the consortium, runtime and frame in which the project is carried out.

This information is of interest for externals that want to inform themselves about the

project, or might want to contact members of the consortium. To keep externals informed

about major events within the ESROCOS, the website contains a news section (cf. Figure

5-2, left), which was steadily updated throughout the project. By January 2019, the news

section of the ESROCOS website counts 10 entries. The website also contains links to the

public source code repository and the developer documentation (cf. section 5.1.5).

Figure 5-2: ESROCOS Website with internal section

For internal communication, the website also features a password protected internal area.

The internal are provides a file repository (cf. Figure 5-2, right), which is used to distribute

larger files between project partners. Each project partner has the possibility to upload

or download files or create folders. The file section was used mostly for collaborative work

on documents or to provide common document templates. The internal area of the project

website also provides a forum, which was used for internal discussions of specific topics.

Figure 5-3 shows some visit statistics of the website that where generated with Google

Analytics. It shows, that by 14.1.2019, the Website was visited 3074. For the runtime of

the project, this gives ca. 128 visits per month. The bounce rate mentioned in the figure

gives the percentage of users that leave the website immediately after visiting it. “Organic

Search” refers to the number visitors, that where guided to the website using a search

engine.

5.1.4. ANIMATIONS AND VIDEOS

A video of 2 minutes length about the ESROCOS project was created. After a short

introduction of the project approach and the consortium, the three different

demonstration and validation scenarios are introduced. To illustrate the target platforms

video shots of the robots that are used for validation and the used simulation environment

are shown. The video is closed by project participants being interviewed and answering

questions about the project. Figure 5-11 shows pictures taken from the ESROCOS video.

The video was show on the IAC booth (cf. Section 5.2.15) and was made available online

on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFnPJYkHxCg. The YouTube video is

linked on the official ESROCOS website and embedded into DFKI’s ESROCOS webpage.

For a large video screen on the IAC booth (cf. Section 5.2.15), the video was integrated

into a longer video introducing also projects OG2-6.

Figure 5-11: Pictures taken from the ESROCOS video

5.1.5. PUBLIC SOURCE CODE REPOSITORY AND DEVELOPER REFERENCE

One of the project goals was to provide open source software and make it available to

the developer community. To reach out to software developers we chose to publish the

source code of the developments done in ESROCOS on GitHub at

https://github.com/ESROCOS. A screenshot of the overview page of the ESROCOS

“organization” at GitHub is given in Figure 5-12. The organization currently counts 68

individual repositories and 19 active developers. Since ESROCOS in parts relies on

software that was already existing at the start of the project (e.g. TASTE) and has

established its own development workflow and source code repositories, the ESROCOS

GitHub organization does not contain these software parts.

GitHub provides for each individual sub-project, a platform for technical discussions and

improvements (issue system, milestones) and documentation (readme.md, wiki per

project) to allow focusses discussions on technical details.

We have implemented a “Developer Reference” for ESROCOS at

https://github.com/ESROCOS/esrocos.github.io/wiki. The Developer Reference provides

technical background information and tutorials on the usage of the ESROCOS system. It

is based on the Wiki system provided by GitHub and allows easy modification and creation

of new content for all developers registered at the ESROCOS organization. A screenshot

of the front page of the Developer Reference is given in Figure 5-13.

7. REVIEW OF DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES

The Dissemination Plan [RD.1] defined dissemination goals that where to be achieved

during the project. This section evaluates the dissemination activities that where

described in above against the goals defined in [RD.1]. The original table from [RD.1] is

therefore supplemented with an additional row per dissemination channel commenting

on the success of the activities.

The papers where published to different journals and conferences

than the ones suggested in section 4.4.1 of [RD.1]. The chosen

places for publications are more focussed on the specific target

audience for topics of the particular paper than the suggestions,

which were mainly about robotics in general.

Review

Ok. Section 5.1.5 describes the GitHub repository and development

infrastructure. We coupled the release of a software version to the

occurrence of the FA and CDR milestone of the project. This practise

will need to be adjusted after the project end.

The ESROCOS methodology website, that was mentioned in [RD.1]

was supposed to be used for knowledge capturing about the

ESROCOS system. It was replaced by the Developer Reference on

GitHub. The reason for this choice was the difficulty to create content

for the Methodology web site and that only a few people had access

to create content.

The maintainership was agreed to be shifted to the OG9 project.

Ownership need to be shifted accordingly. Current owners of the

ESROCOS GitHub organizations are employees of DFKI, GMV and

KUL.

Text: February 21, 22 and 23 saw three of the outstanding milestone moments

of FACILITATORS (https://lnkd.in/eh5J7B5), ERGO (http://www.h2020-

ergo.eu/) and ESROCOS (https://lnkd.in/e8G-9dv), respectively, with the

holding of the Critical Design Reviews (CDRs) to set out detailed designs

and prototypes.

These CDRs were attended by partners from the consortium of each

project, plus the European Commission's technical officer and PSA

representatives for assessment of the final result, a resounding success

in all cases. These projects thus cross their equator and embark on the

final phase, which will see the start of implementation of all developed

technology.
