MOBILE LEARNINGLEARNING

What is mobile learning?

Mobile learning involves the use of mobile technology, either alone or in combination with other information and communication technology (ICT), to enable learning anytime and anywhere.

Some examples of mobile learning projects

The MANOLO project (2006)

The Ambient Wood project (2004)

MyArtSpace project (2004)

The Ambient Wood Project

Ambient Wood is a multi-site project, within the learning and playing theme, that builds upon the experiences and lessons gained from the Hunting of the Snark project (Rogers et al, 2002).

A playful learning experience was developed where children explored and reflected upon a physical environment that had been augmented with a medley of digital abstractions.

Mobile Learning in EducationTechnology-rich activities can sustain high levels of student engagement and peer collaboration  compared to less technology focused activities.

Educators need to figure out how to harness mobile platforms for instructional purposes and employ them to boost educational learning.

A majority (52 percent) of students in grades 6-12 believe that having access to a tablet computer is an essential component of their ultimate school. Fifty-one percent of school administrators agree with these sentiments as well.

Mobile Learning Support for Teachers

The mobile learning revolution is alive and growing in popularity every day. When schools move toward mobile learning in the classroom, they can take advantage of electronic devices such as tablets and cell phones that offer portability and ease of use. Mobile learning technologies can offer teachers a flexible approach to learning with their students in a variety of locations, and encourage this learning to continue at home.

The mobile technology, while essential, is only one of the different types of

technology and interaction employed. The learning experiences cross spatial,

temporal and/or conceptual borders and involve interactions with fixed

technologies as well as mobile devices. Weaving the interactions with mobile

technology into the fabric of pedagogical interaction that develops around them

becomes the focus of attention. ( Kukulska - Hulme et al., 2009: 20)
