When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first steps on the moon in July 1969, the world was suddenly split into two categories - those who believe the Apollo 11 landings, and those who don’t. We’ll investigate both sides of this debate - in fact 52% of the British public still believe the landings were an elaborate hoax designed to trump Russia in the space race!

In this show we’ll search for a definitive answer by recreating the moon landing for ourselves, testing the various competing theories against each other. Featuring inverviews with leading experts, conspiracy theorists, archive material and highly detailed reconstructions of the landing, we put this debate to bed once and for all.

THE SHADOWS Conspiracy theorists believe the first give away that the landing was created in a studio is the direction of the shadows. The sun, a direct light source, should create straight parallel shadows. So why do the Armstrong and Aldrin’s images show converging shadows falling at strange angles?

THE WAVING FLAGThe U.S. flag appears to billow in the wind. Why, when space is a windless vacuum?

THE STARSAs the moon has no atmosphere, stars should be visible in the photos. Was this NASA’s greatest oversight when faking the landings, and proof they’d ‘landed’ on a film-set?

T H E T R U T H :

In an effort to find the truth, we’re going to head to the Trona Pinnacles in the Californian desert and recreate the landing in the most accurate way possible. Under expert guidance, we’ll reconstruct the conditions surrounding the Apollo 11 landing in painstaking detail. One by one we’ll look at all the various conspiracies that suggest the landing was an elaborate hoax, putting them to the test to either prove their validity or debunk as pure fantasy.

Were the unusual shadows really so unusual? Should the stars really should have been caught on camera? Should the flag planted into the lunar surface really have been as still, as the conspiracy theorists suggest? Deep in the desert, we find out once and for all.
