DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO: This course stresses the fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, practical vocabulary, useful phrases and the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish. It includes reading a variety of texts with emphasis on oral expression and study of Spanish and Spanish American culture. OBJECTIVOS: Students will build oral proficiency in Spanish, expand and perfect knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures, improve reading and writing skills, develop critical thinking abilities, and gain an increased understanding of Hispanic culture. Students will keep a journal of their reactions to assigned readings and debate current issues in class. ASISTENCIA: Students are allowed 3 absences. Every absence after the first 3 will lower the final grade by 5 percent. It is important to be on time. 3 tardies will equal an absence. TAREA Y DIARIO: Each written assignment collected is worth five points unless designated otherwise. No late work will be accepted, except for excused absences. Students are held accountable for all assignments, handouts, vocabulary, and material covered in class whether they are present or not. It is recommended that you get the name and phone number of two or three other students so that you can find out what homework was assigned in class.

Students are required to keep a journal of responses to assigned readings. The journal will be checked for completeness on the day of each exam and at the end of the course (for a total of four times). Each journal check will be worth 25 points. A journal entry for each chapter should include:

1) Ten original sentences using vocabulary from the vocabulario básico section of the chapter. 2) A paragraph response/reflection on either a) the nota cultural at the beginning of the chapter or b)

the topic of the conversación creadora.

PARTICIPACIÓN: Participation is required not only because it is a part of the final grade, but also because it directly affects how much Spanish a student will learn. Participation includes oral participation in class discussions and small group activities. Students should pay attention, ask questions, and make sure all cell phones are off. Also, students should always attempt to speak in Spanish before resorting to English—excessive use of English in class will be reflected in the participation grade. EXAMENES Y PRUEBAS: There will be 3 exams. Exams will include listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. There will also be frequent quizzes that may be given at any time during class. There will be absolutely no make-ups except in extreme circumstances.

ENTREVISTAS ORALES: There will be 2 oral interviews during the term. One will be conducted at mid-term, and another will be the final exam. Each will be worth 100 points.
