NOVEMBER FILMS @ THE JOHN CLARE ARTS CINEMAAs the nights draw in the best place to be is inside watching a good film and this NovemberThe John Clare Arts Cinema gives you the chance to do exactly that every Thursday!

First up on Thursday November 7 is Reality an Italianfilm directed by Matteo Garrone. The film takes a darklycomic look at Luciano, a charming and affable fishmongerwhose unexpected and sudden obsession with being acontestant on the reality show Big Brother leads him downa rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia. Soovercome by his dream of being on reality TV, Luciano'sown reality begins to spiral out of control, making for oneof the most compelling tragicomic character studies sinceScorsese's The King of Comedy.

Next on Thursday November 14 is Robot & Frankstarring Frank Langella, Liv Tyler and Susan Sarandon. Thequerulous Frank is in the early stages of dementia and atodds with a changing world and is not best pleased whenhis son gives him a gleaming white robot to care for him.But gradually a strange friendship grows up between thecriminally minded man and ethical machine, as Frankreturns to burglary with the robot as his smart newaccomplice.

On Thursday November 21, French film In The Housearrives at the John Clare Cinema. Set in a secondary schoolin an unidentified French town where the intense, prissy, humourless Germain teaches literature. Germain despisesmost of his fellow teachers for their conventional thinkingand despairs of his pupils for their uniformity and lack ofimagination. Suddenly, Germain discovers a gifted pupil, the 16-year-old Claude (the handsome newcomer ErnstUmhauer), who turns in an essay on ‘What I did last week’.

Finally Thursday November 28 sees the turn of 2013 film– No.

In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due tointernational pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on hispresidency. The country will vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Pinochetextending his rule for another eight years. Oppositionleaders for the ‘no’ campaign persuade a brash youngadvertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal),to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scantresources and under scrutiny by the despot's minions,Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.

Peterborough’s very own Adrian Durham, former news and sport reporter on Hereward FM,now drive presenter on talkSPORT radio returned tothe city to help launch his first book, Is He All That?and fittingly the lifelong Posh fan held his booksigning at the Peterborough United Club Shop.

Never one to hold back on his opinions the formerDeacons’ schoolboy who’s Peterborough born andbred, has had some lively debates about his biggestpassion and there’s no doubt his first book willcause even more.

“I wanted to do a football book but I didn’t want toconcentrate on one particular thing,” Adrian toldESP. “In effect it’s like a reference book, a historybook an alternative history of football, and it’s full ofopinions about football and different aspects offootball. There’s something in there for everybodyand that’s what I was trying to do.”

Fans queued up to grab a copy including one Barry Fry who Adrian’s had many a debate with over the years!

“I am a lifelong Posh fan and the opportunity for thefirst signing to be here at London Road on a matchday – that’s pretty special to me,” said Adrian. “It’sthe first ground I came to when I was six, it’s why Ifell in love with football and Posh. It means a lot to me.”

Controversial topics include – Were the ArsenalInvincible who went unbeaten in 2003-04 actuallyany good? Why didn't Gary Lineker cheat for Englandagainst Argentina at the 1986 World Cup? And justhow brilliant was David Beckham? It’s sure to stir upeven more banter with footy fans but we reckon it’sa great read and should make a brilliant Christmaspresent! TIME TO GET MYCHOPPER OUTI’m always looking for an excuse to get my Chopperout and you can imagine how excited I was when theForty Years On project asked if they could put it ondisplay at their recently opened exhibition inPeterborough Museum.

Although my Raleigh Chopper is a later model with asplit seat and handle grip gears, the bike’s every bit athrowback to the 1970s when our city was in themidst of rapid expansion, which began in 1968 whenwe were designated as a ‘new town.’

The Forty Years On exhibition, which is a result of apartnership between the Vivacity Archives Serviceand Eastern Angles Theatre Company, runs until thestart of the New Year (January 12).

The visitor experience is all about sampling local lifein the late 60s and 70s with the help of iconic items, including my bike, a Soda Stream drinks maker andgames that were manufactured in local factories, along with original documents, maps andphotographs which depict this exciting time in ourcity’s history.

You can also see TV adverts that featured the famousRoman Centurion Roy Kinnear and to listen to radioadverts, which were part of a media campaign toattract newcomers to Peterborough.

One quirky touch is the ability to listen to audio clipson an original 1970s office telephone of long-termresidents and people that relocated here from acrossthe UK and the Commonwealth as part of the massmigration to Peterborough.

Forty Years On is well worth a visit and top marks tothe team that have helped bring our recent, mostimportant past to life. The exhibition brings backwarm memories of my childhood and of how thingsuse to be.

If you work in town and fancy a change to wasting alunch hour with a £25 cup of coffee in one of the highstreet coffee chains, try this exhibition and themuseum’s coffee shop. You won’t be disappointed.

TJ OFF TO THEMOTHERLANDIt’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it. Balderston sales supremo TJhas been tasked with having to go to Italy where he must eat and drink likea king and drool over hundreds of motorbikes that’ll no doubt be modelledby dozens of leathered up blondes in stilettos.

It’s the annual International Motorcycle Show in Milan (November 5 to 10)and what I love about it the most, which is typically Italian, is that it’s freeadmission for women on the Friday.

All the leading motorcycle brands will be there including Italian favouritesDucati and Aprilia. I’m tempted to ride there myself on either the ApriliaTuono I’m pictured on or the Ducati Mulitstrada TJ has his leg over, butboth have been prepped ready for the showroom at Balderston.

What I might do instead is fly over with TJ and – since I’ll be in Italy –make BMW an ‘offer they couldn’t refuse’ that’ll mean riding back on thenew R nineT Classic Roadster. We won’t see this gorgeous looking bikehere until March but I don’t think I can wait that long.

Created true to the spirit of café racers, the R nineT embodies emotion andauthentic traditional looks and offers a unique mix of classic and moderndesign.

It comes with a brushed aluminium tank and panels, twin-stacked exhaustpipes and forged aluminium parts. Best of all it’s powered by the excellent1170cc air-cooled Boxer twin engine.

You’ll be able to customise this bike to your heart’s content and it’ll easilybe the best looking classic roadster on the market.

So, I’ll be trying my utmost to get my hands on one otherwise it’ll be Marchbefore I can have my wicked way with the R nineT on our B-roads.

Please God let me win the lottery so I can place my order!

WHO’S THE JOSEPH?Chico delighted the crowds at last year’s Christmas lights switch-on event in CathedralSquare and it looks like the person flicking on this year’s switch alongside the Mayorand leader of the council isn’t going to be revealed until the day itself.

Word is the mystery celebrity doing the honours will also that night be announced asthe new Joseph (And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), which will be playing atThe Broadway Theatre from December 17. I wonder who it is?!

DISCO CUPIN MEMORYOF ANDOGolf – a pastime I’ve yet to succumb to but it wasone that my dear and departed friend AndoTodisco used to play with all the other ‘mushes’.

In memory of Ando, 15 ‘golfers’ played in theinaugural Disco Cup last month and I’m pleased tohear it was a great success with Tony ‘shovelthumbs’ Diiorio claiming winning honours.

Better still, this event is to be a biannual one from2014 and it’ll be raising money for the British HeartFoundation. Well done boys. Maybe it’s time I gotone of those stick things and tried hitting agobstopper too.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT!Contraception against the elements at thePerkins Great Eastern Run.

I normally highlight one local hero to focuson every month but on this occasion I’mreferring to the 5,000-strong participants ofthe Perkins Great Eastern Run whodemonstrated what our inner heroes aremade of by completing this excellent annualevent in torrential rain.

Hero acknowledgement is deserved allaround here. First of all to the small team ofcouncil officers who worked tirelessly foralmost a year, putting strain on themselvesand their work-life balance to ensure thePGER was going to be executed to thehighest of standards.

Then, supporting the council as organisers, were the dozens of volunteers that make upthe running advisory group who helpedsteer the event in the right direction.Principal sponsors Perkins and all the othersponsors involved also deserve a mention,as without their support Peterboroughwouldn’t be able to put on a sporting eventof such magnitude and reputation.

But it was on the day when the passion, commitment and determination of all thesegroups shone through. Organisers were

practically soaked to the skin all day longand not once did any of the volunteersalong the route, whether they weremarshalling road closures or manning waterstations, look like there was another placethey’d rather be.

The rain wasn’t about to deter the hugemajority of runners and in some ways thedifficult conditions served to actually spurthem on to set out what they turned out onthe Embankment to achieve. Hundreds ofrunners recorded their personal best timesand thousands of runners raised thousandsof pounds for worthy causes.

There was an infectious vibe created thatday. Dozens of spectators still lined thestreets in support of the runners and morethan 100 people have already entered therace for 2014.

Peterborough does events very well and ona day like this year’s Perkins Great EasternRun I was proud and happy to be walkinghome after a hard day’s work, soaked andwith the loss of feeling in my fingers andtoes.

WHATEVERA survey by OnePoll found that ‘whatever’ is one of the words Brits hatethe most. That’s because it’s replaced swearwords as an unsavouryand alternative response to a statement or question. Some classicexamples where ‘whatever’ is used to reply instead of an expletive:

“Why don’t you ever listen to me?”“Isn’t it time you got a job?”“You won’t win anything with David Moyes.”“Isn’t it time you went on a diet?”“You haven’t got a clue about commitment.”

GLOVES OFF WITHHOLMES AND HATTONOne of my favourite heavyweight boxing champions, Larry Holmes, is the next big name tostar at Kevin Sanders’ boxing dinners (November 24) – and Ricky Hatton has also beenbooked for 2014.

Holmes ranks as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and fans will be able to get apersonal insight into some of his career highlights at The Solstice this month. My earliestmemory of Holmes was when he lost to Michael Spinks in 1985 and with it the opportunityto re-write history by matching Rocky Marciano’s 49-fight unbeaten run.

Holmes was sparring partner to Muhammad Ali (whom he beat at the end of Ali’s career)and etched his name as one of the greats during the late 1970s and early 80s when theheavyweight division was brimming with proper talent with the likes of Shavers, Norton, Aliand Witherspoon.

Ricky Hatton will be in town on February 20 – again at The Solstice – and this boxingdinner is sure to be a sell-out too. ‘The Hitman’ was one of Britain’s most popular and braveboxers who never ducked a fight. He’s a former WBA, IBF and IBO welterweight championand retired for good after a comeback fight 12 months ago.

Tickets for both dinners are available from Kevin Sanders on 01733 371912 or 07872 601467.

Some are born great, some achievegreatness and some have greatnessthrust upon 'em…like a piping hot

takeaway pizza delivered to your doorstep.

All of which brings me to the latest advertisingcampaign by Domino’s Pizzas. I'm sure you'llhave seen it by now. Pizza delivery boy ridesmoped with an order of a hot dog filled stuffed crust pizza tocustomer’s house, accompanied by the lyrics of a song about ahorse, with the advert ending in a silhouette of the moped pulling awheelie, as the new Domino’s strapline 'Greatness from Dominos'is sung to the tune of Champion the Wonder Horse.

Now there are many things in the world of popular culture in 2013that can claim 'greatness'. Mo Farah winning double gold at theAthletics World Championships, the latest series of Breaking Bad orThe Rolling Stones’ Glastonbury performance to name just a few –but definitely not a company stuffing a pizza crust withreconstituted meat and ripping-off a TV theme from the 1970s topromote it. That’s lameness, and possibly laziness, but definitelynot greatness because surely at no point has anyone ever eaten apizza and thought – 'Do you know what would really improve this?A tin of hot dog meat shoved into the crust. I'm off to Aldi to get atin for 18p!' Because if there's one type of meat guaranteed to ruina pizza then I’d think it's the tinned hot dog meat variety. I'll admitthe idea of stuffing the crust of a pizza with meat is a good one –but unless it's steak don't bother!

Secondly, there's nothing like a good song parody to make youlaugh, and this is nothing like a good song parody. All they've doneis change the song's title – that’s definitely lame.

Plus if you're in charge of choosing a song to advertise a hot dogstuffed pizza, following the stampede of horse-meat in food storiesthis year, surely you'd steer clear of any songs connected to horses, especially a much loved, but ultimately very dead fictional TV one. It'd be like a supermarket advertising frozen lasagne with thetheme tune to Black Beauty. Who's in charge of marketing atDomino’s? Frankie Dettori…? Clare Balding…?

Greatness is...

dogflavoured

pizza!

Taking a coat 'just in case' is nowbecoming a distant memory, winter’s on the way and leaving

the house without layers on results inhugging yourself to keep warm!

The thought of layering cansometimes bring a sweat on in itselfbut don't stress too much as thismonth I've shown how some of yourkey summer looks can be shiftedstraight through to this season.

Thanks to the ever changing Britishweather it’s hard for us to put awaysummer or winter clothing butlayering up will make use of ourmixed up wardrobes.

Shift dresses are fantastic for layering either by wearing a longersleeve T-shirt underneath or throwingon a jumper over the top to create askirt and jumper effect and then justadd a pair of thick tights and boots.

All those summer T-shirts can be usedas a layer to create contrast to ashorter box style jumper over the top.

The same goes for you guys too...obviously not the shift dresses part!Layer up your T-shirts under jumpersand wear jumpers under thicker shirts that can be worn as lightweight coats.

There are some absolutely beautifulcoats out at the minute that shouldcomplement your look beautifully.

So this winter embrace leaving thehouse in the sunshine and cominghome in snow – with all yourseason’s layers on you'll be dressedappropriately whatever the weather!

If you hadn’t quite realised the newseason at The Broadway is a uniqueone – some of the hottest shows

running week after week is a series likeno other elsewhere in the country. MartiPellow followed by Will Young, thelegend that is Tommy Steele and theWest End favourite Blood Brothers. Thisis WOW on the scale of theatre seasonsfolks so we hope you won’t miss out!

For those who were stung by the lastcompany to try to run the Broadway andlost money on tickets for shows thatnever opened it’s likely there’ll be somereservations about supporting this latestseason. However with top theatreproducer Bill Kenwright CBE himself

among those who missed out, you canbe assured that this guy is on your side!

So much so he’s set aside hundreds oftickets for the first few shows of Evita ona pay what you can basis available 90minutes prior to the show.

Bill Kenwright is a producer, director andtheatre man through and through. Hispassion for the business shines throughwhen you talk to him and to Bill there’snothing worse than an empty theatre.

“It’s like a church, if it’s buzzing andvibrant it’s a great place to be – it’s a bitsad if there’s no one there. A theatreneeds people.

“It’s extraordinary to me what happened.I don’t know the ins and outs of it but Iknow people were badly let down. I hadshows that I wasn’t paid for so I waspart of that nightmare.”

Bill says there was no grand plan.Bringing his shows to Peterboroughcame out of a conversation about whathad happened and somehow it all justfell into place that he was able to bringthe productions together to make up thisimpressive run.

“It’s such a buzz,” says Bill. “It’s as mucha buzz for me as it is for anyone else,”and you can tell by the sparkle in his eyethat it truly is.

“At the end of the day we cannot makemoney – it’s impossible during this first12 weeks. But at the end of the day ifwe could re-establish this theatre itwould be great.

“The second greatest sight in the world, the first is the ball hitting the back of thenet, (Bill is Chairman of Everton FC) is aqueue at the box office and I’ve beenwatching people coming in today andthe box office staff talking to the punters– I’ve always loved that personal touch.

the confidence of the people ofPeterborough but the council andVivacity have been fantastic – nothing’sbeen too much trouble.”

Bill seems as excited as theatregoers, enthusing about the stunning MichaelMorpurgo (War Horse) production TheButterfly Lion and of course his rock ’n’roll favourites Dreamboats andPetticoats and Save The Last Dance ForMe. He’s a huge fan of Tommy Steele, has great admiration for Marti Pellow

and Will Young and can’t wait to bring anew Joseph to the city.

There will be incredible sets and thesame fantastic production values you’dget in the West End. So when the curtainfalls on this incredible season whatthen?

“It would be going too far to say I’ve gotfurther plans but it’s just a given that Idon’t do anything for 12 weeks. But I’vegot 19 shows on around the world, I’vegot a football club you know – let’s justsee how this goes.

“Would I be surprised if theadventure didn’t continue – yes. I wouldhope that this would lead to somethingelse. I really don’t want to own a theatrebut if I can help this theatre live a little itwould be great. As long as I can get thebuzz I’m here and I’d like to stay.”

Having already scored a top10 Billboard hit across thepond with her track Clarity,Foxes is fresh off finishing herfirst ever UK headline tourand is tipped for the big time. But how did we get here? Foxes – previously Louisa Rose Allen – triedher hand at studying music but dropped outwhen she realised it wasn’t the studying partthat she enjoyed. Now 22, she’s alreadyfeatured on tracks by Rudimental and FallOut Boy, and her latest single Youth hastastemakers on both sides of the Atlantic hotunder the collar.

ESP’s Alex Jones chats to pop’s rising star…

Can you tell us about how the past yearhas been for you? It must’ve been like awhirlwind!

“It has, it's been absolutely crazy. It's beenlike America here, America there, travellingback and forth and yeah, it's been ridiculous.I've definitely had a 'featuring Foxes' year.”

Tell me about your latest single Youth…

“It was one of the first songs I ever wrotewhen I had the vision of what I wantedFoxes to sound like.

“It's a very personal song for me, I wrote itwhen I first moved up to London. At thattime it felt like my friends from my home

town thought I was running off to pursuethis dream that wasn't a reality and I thoughtto myself ‘why can't I just do what I love?’Why is there this pressure to grow up andget a job I hate?’”

You studied music in London for a yearbefore dropping out. What about thatexperience didn’t you enjoy?

“It just wasn’t for me. The theory part of thecourse was overwhelming and at times itfelt like I was learning Chinese. So I droppedout and started playing Open Mic nights andstarted getting myself some real lifeexperiences in the industry instead oflearning about them in a textbook.”

Artists can spend their whole career trying to crack America andyou've done it before releasing yourfirst album!

“I know and that’s mainly down to thesuccess of Clarity. It's overwhelming tobe honest with you, to have so manypeople out there recognise my voice anda song that I feature on being sosuccessful in the Billboard chart is crazy. When I come back home to the UK it’snice to be under the radar almost, I canjust relax but it is confusing, it's almostlike I've done things the wrong wayround.”

You mentioned your collaborationwith Zedd, Clarity, how did thatcome about?

“Well we moved around in similar circlesand I knew a lot of people in that sceneand one day we skyped and put togethera plan. It's funny it wasn't until after weskyped that I actually looked him up onWikipedia. After that I was like, wow thisguy is a big deal.

“I also collaborated with Fall Out Boy for asong on their new album called Just OneYesterday. It's very flattering to be involvedwith artists like them.”

You have an album set for release forearly 2014, can you give us any hints asto what it sounds like?

“Yeah we actually sat down in the studioand listened to it and it really is an array ofdifferent sounds!

“When making the album I really wanted to include songs that weren't juststraightforward singles you know, Iwanted some proper album tracks on therebecause they're the songs I used to enjoylistening to as a kid. I think those tracks givethe album depth.”

Did you think about calling back insome favours from the artists you'vehelped out?

“It did cross my mind, at one point I wasthinking 'I wonder if I should get Zedd in' butI decided that it could get ridiculous and seta precedent for me having features on mysongs for the rest of my life!

“I decided the debut album would be a good time to start my own thing aside fromthe features. Of course I would love to workwith them all again in the future and I’msure we will.”

Foxes’ latest single Youth is out now and hernew single Echo is set for release onNovember 11 on 7-inch vinyl and digitaldownload. Read the full interview online atwww.espmag.co.uk.

It’s the first time the cinema has servedalcoholic beverages, with everything fromwine and beer (Budweiser and Becks ontap), to bottles of Corona and Kopparbergavailable – which can also be taken intoscreens in plastic cups – with leadingcoffee-brand Costa also on-site serving upcappuccinos, mochas or a simple cup of tea.

To top it all off, the Lounge Bar serves upfood in a cosmopolitan seating area, withthe likes of pizza, burgers, prime rib, chickenwings and paninis on offer – along with aKid’s Menu.

Jonathan Wheeler, General Manager of

He told me – “We’re proud to be the firstcinema to pilot this new scheme andprovide the highest spec for the Lounge Barand automated box-office system.”

With nine points of payment – completewith new fully automated tills – it has neverbeen easier to pick up tickets for the latestblockbuster releases.

Jonathan added – “With more than half ofour screens now boasting the latest XLRseating, we now have exciting plans goingforward to complete this redevelopment assoon as possible.

NBA 2K14 (360/PS3/PC)Out now

With next-gen competition looming in the form of EA’s NBA Live 14 – 2K don’trest on their laurels as they take it to the hoop and slam dunk it yet again.

Improved Pro Stick control and defensive mechanics, the addition of Europeanteams, and a great LeBron James ‘Path to Greatness’ mode, helps 2K14 raise thebar yet again.

The loss of some legendary licenses take a little of the gloss off, but with XboxOne and PS4 versions excitedly on the horizon this gleefully connects way fromdowntown – Steph Curry style.

FIFA 14 (PS3/360/3DS/PSV) Out now

Compared to 2K, EA’s boys do seem to have rested on their laurels a tad withtheir leanest update in years.

Fanboys don’t seem to be overly impressed with the new Pure Shot and ballphysics system – which takes some getting used to – but this is still undoubtedlyTHE best pound-for-pound licensed football game on the market.

With one eye on the next-gen market EA could be forgiven – but this finalcurrent-gen effort isn’t a must-buy if you still have FIFA 13. Maybe the Xbox Oneand PS4 versions will be?

PES 2014 (360/PS3/PC) Out now

And that has left the door well and truly open for PES 2014 to make aserious dent in FIFA’s dominance with their best version in many a year.

Sadly, without a next-gen version in the pipeline for this year, that impetusmay be lost, but for now the franchise is making the right moves –particularly with the creative TrueBall Tech mode.

It still needs a lot of work for perfection – and newbies will still loathelicensing-issues – but the battle for gaming football supremacy has neverbeen so tight.

F1 2013 (PS3/360/PC) Out now

The word that would best describe Codemasters’ latest Formula Oneouting is ‘incremental’ – but it's still the most exhilarating way to go toe-to-toe with Hamilton, Button, Vettel and co.

The graphics and racing have been tweaked and the new Classic Modedoes at least offer a new reason to purchase this only marginally updatedversion.

If driving as the legendary Nigel Mansell at Brand’s Hatch (when I saw himwin the British Grand Prix in 1986) is enticing – then it’s just about worth it.

NHL 14 (360/PS3) Out now

Just like with 2K’s aforementioned NBA game, this has been a multi-timewinner of sports gaming awards – and it’s not hard to see why.

This has undoubtedly been one of the most-polished titles out there – excellentlyimproved this year with a cutting-edge physics engine and Live the Life modes –and is simply the best at what it does.

Throw in an NHL ’94 Anniversary mode (I remember playing it first time round)and you’ve got a slice of Ice Hockey heaven that is puckin’ exceptional.

POKEMON X & Y (3DS) Out now

These are actually two versions of exciting new Pokemon RPG games (I had the‘Y version’ to review) – boasting great online social features.

The 15-year-old series is brought to life on Nintendo’s three-dimensionalhandheld with colourfully impressive graphics – and a meaty adventure to boot.

There’s only character differences between the two versions – in a quest tobecome the best Pokemon trainer of all – and the only question is: how manycan you catch?

GRAVITYReleased: November 8

One of the most highly-anticipated films of theyear finally make it to these shores – and isone of those rare films that MUST be seen in3D if at all possible. After a record-breakingOctober box-office Stateside – it has alreadyamassed more than $200m – this intensethriller from Harry Potter and the Prisoner ofAzkaban director Alfonso Cuaran sees SandraBullock’s medical engineer and GeorgeClooney’s veteran astronaut battle for survivalin deep space.

They duo have to work together after theirshuttle is destroyed on a seemingly routinespace walk – in this already critically-laudedheart-pounder.

THE BUTLERReleased: November 15

Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King ofScotland) headlines an all-star cast in one ofthe sleeper hits of the summer in the States.

He stars as a White House butler whose life ischronicled as he serves eight Americanpresidents through famous historical moments– such as the civil rights movement andVietnam. Matthew McConaughey, JohnCusack and Alan Rickman co-star.

THE COUNSELLORReleased: November 15

Director Ridley Scott turns his hand to crime –in this drama from the writer of No Country forOld Men.

When a respected lawyer (MichaelFassbender) has a one-time dalliance withdrug-trafficking, it turns into a nightmarescenario when he gets in way over his head.

Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz andCameron Diaz complete an impressive cast.

THE HUNGERGAMES:CATCHING FIREReleased: November 21

The massively successful original ignited abox-office stampede – and this sequelstarring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence(best actress for Silver Linings Playbook)could be even bigger.

After becoming victors at the Hunger Games,Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (JoshHutcherson) leave their friends and family toembark on a victor’s tour of the districts. Butwith a rebellion simmering after theirsuccess, they become targets of the rulinghierarchy and President Snow (DonaldSutherland) – unhappy at their new iconicstatus.

Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworthreturn – with Oscar-winner Phillip SeymourHoffman joining the cast.

DUCK TALES: REMASTERED &FLASHBACK (360/PS3/PC) Out now

For those of you wanting to take a step back in time – these high-defdownloadable revamps of these respective much-loved 1989 and 1992 gameswill do the trick.

The platforming simplicity of Duck Tales (also on the WiiU) holds up a little betterthan the once-lauded shooter Flashback – but both are nicely polished efforts.

And with that I lean over from my passenger seatposition to engage the sport button on thedashboard.

Sam was already having the time of his life drivingthis lively Abarth 500 but with sport mode on thesteering is sharper, the suspension stiffer and theacceleration is more responsive. The look on Sam’sface is all of a sudden transformed to that of a zookeeper wrestling to tame a wild and out of controllion.

The excellent Abarth 500 is indeed a bit of an animaland one of our city’s promising young boxers had methis toughest opponent yet. Sam’s already secured thesupport of Motorpoint in Fengate as one of hissponsors, as he continues to make his mark in theprofessional ranks.

The Eye puncher has strung together impressiveperformances in the ring and his future certainlylooks bright. Motorpoint manager Lee Arnold wasquick to spot Sam’s potential and offered support byway of a liveried up Ford Focus to get him to andfrom his training base at Vic’s Gym in Hampton.

Problem is, Sam took a liking to the sprightly Abarthand Lee might be getting a part exchange requestsoon! I’m not surprised Fiat’s tuned up 500 pushedSam’s buttons. I’m currently enjoying my secondAbarth 500 and I can honestly say, after more thanthree years of ownership, this little devil of a car stillmanages to put a smile on my face.

Italy has always built small cars well. Yes, inthe 1970s and 80s most of them turned to rustat the slightest contact with moisture butthere’s no denying what memorable drivingexperiences small Italian cars provide.

Every self-confessed petrol head should ownan Italian car at some point in their life andthey should start with an Abarth 500. Thisparticular example can be had for more than£2k off the conventional forecourt price and£3k less than what it sold for when brand new12 months ago.

With only 8,000 miles on the clock, a recentservice and plenty of warranty left on it, thiscar is excellent value at just £11,495. Throw inthe security of buying from Motorpoint and alltheir after-sales care and you can’t go toowrong in reaching for your wallet.

This Abarth is the 135bhp version in factoryspec. Abarth offer a whole range of trick bitsyou can add to the car from side stripes and17” alloys to an Abarth etched chrome petrolcap and folding rear seats. The list is endlessand you’ll feel like a kid in a sweet shop tryingto choose what upgrades to spend yourmassive saving on.

So what’s it like to drive? In a word: brilliant. It’s everything you’d expect a pocket rocket tobe. One minute you’re cruising along with thewindow open, addicted to the infectious burblethat’s omitted from the twin exhaust pipes. And the next you’re having to keep your witsabout you when the 1.4 turbo engine urges youto push it to the limit on a spirited Sundayafternoon B-road drive.

“Is the sport button on?” asksSam Barron with a grin stretchingacross the entire width of hisface. “Not yet.” I replied.

The Abarth 500 is addictive. It’s a proper driver’scar that keeps you involved. You’ll find yourselfchanging gear more times than an F1 pilot as itbegs to be driven with determination and gusto.Twisty roads are to the Abarth what cleavage isto Helen Flanagan. It’s at home in the city butcomes alive on country roads.

Non-sport mode is a tad limp but it’s by nomeans a let-down. However, hitting the sportsbutton stirs the very essence of the scorpion thatthis car’s badge carries and I can’t think of oneintelligent reason why you’d ever want to drivewith it disengaged.

As a bundle of fun these cars are hard to beat. They deliver performance and the 0-62 in 7.9seconds feels quicker than on paper with it beingsuch a small car (the 160bhp EsseEsse version isa real handful). Looks-wise, the 500 has retainedalmost every inch of its original voluptuousshape from an era when Italian cars weremodelled on the curves of Sophia Loren and GinaLollobrigida.

I’m a big fan of these cars and as if myendorsement isn’t enough, the Abarth 500 hasalso won the hearts of celebrity owners includingMichael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, ChrisEvans, Jay Kay and James Martin.

If you’ve lost your driving mojo and are lookingfor a car with soul and character, look no furtherthan this Abarth in the Motorpoint showroom.

This encourages youto consume nothing but juices in place ofsolid food for a certain number of days, maybe with a soup at the end of the day. Many people do lose water weight andpossibly a couple of pounds each daywhich all sounds fab as it often deliversthe quick weight loss results you want.

But this is NOT what fasting andcleansing is really all about, I know farbetter, safer ways to lose weight andkeep it off without taking such measures. There are also many who tout a severalday detox programme using theirproducts whilst taking daily shakes, supplements and the like which Iwouldn’t recommend. However, somepeople ‘feel’ better for what they think isa mini detox, but this is mainly due toeating less sugar, gluten, meat, caffeine,

alcohol, preservatives, artificialflavourings etc, and because they’reeating a healthier diet rich in veggies and have increased their general water intake.

So let’s look at what juice fasting andcleansing is about and importantlywhat it isn’t.

When I talk fasting I am only talking juicefasting with vegetables and in somecases fruit. Water fasting is not apractice that should ever be undertaken. If you’ve lived in this modern world andnot up a mountain, sat in a yoga pose, drinking in nothing but pure clean air, water and food without ever having beenexposed to a western diet and theforeign chemicals in our environment,(yes that’s you and me both) waterfasting would be an incredible burden onthe body so never advised. We areconsiderably more acidic and toxic todaythan our ancestors.

Fasting in an organised way, but onlywhen your body is ready and undertakenafter a certain level of deep tissuecleansing, can you reap the enormousbenefits physically, mentally, emotionallyand spiritually.

Peterborough Couriers Ltd are specialistsin the Same day courier market in the UK,we provide a fast Same day solution, forall your delivery requirements, from anurgent letter or parcel, to pallets.

It’s a wonderful way to take your body to anotherlevel of deeper cleansing. For some people it takesmonths of eating in a combined way with a diethigh in vegetables, fruits, dealing with strong foodaddictions such as sugar, refined carbohydrates etcand reducing yeasts/fungi and other infections, inflammations and other obstructions that may beblocking our body’s ability to cleanse itself fully andrestore vitality.

Cleansing needs to be done in a stage by stage way– not a stuff all you can eat banquet of sugar, caffeine, refined flours, heavy fats, excess proteinsand the like for months and then for a few days ayear enter a juice fast. In fact it does your body moreharm than good.

Toxicity and acidity in the cells and tissues will bestimulated when we take these alkaline juices, thiselectromagnetic attraction from these juices to theacidic waste will pull this out of the tissues. Soundsgreat but if you’re not then removing themeffectively it’ll do more harm than good and youwon’t feel great. Many people can’t deal with thesymptoms of doing all this too fast and sufferheadaches, bloating, spots, insomnia and the like. This isn’t good for the body and so when you gettold this is just the effect of your detox, it isn’t – thisis waste not being removed and will only go back in.Therefore juice fasting takes on a whole newmeaning and it needs a level of understanding to befully respected.

However, the above said, having a healthyvegetable juice during your day or week inbetweensome other healthy solid foods will bring hugebenefits as juices are absorbed quickly and nutrientsare taken up by the body without any effort on yourdigestion. Taking a healthy veggie juice is abeneficial addition to a healthy diet and can be agreat way to get a glow going for the party season.Or it can be a great way to have a digestive restwhilst delivering a boost of nutrients and energy tothe cells.

Juice fasting is an amazing tool when usedcorrectly, but as always, take advice before goingout there buying a book and getting stuck in, orspending a hefty sum on supplements (many areacid forming and not absorbed well anyway). If youhave a medical condition or are taking medicationthen please speak to your GP before doing suchthings.

Just look at Polly, one satisfiedcustomer who’s definitely looking goodwith their help. After falling ill withmeningitis, Polly then celebrated her

recovery by taking it easy, treating herself to snacks and junkfood but then paid the price.

“As I got better I took the ‘I’m alive, I will enjoy all that lifehas to offer’ option,” said Polly.

“Of course, Ipiled on theweight alongwith everythingelse that goeswith anextremely poordiet and lifestyle including poor skin, especially my face. Itwas dull and grey with a combination of dry, itchy, scalypatches and oily areas that kept getting clogged.”

Fortunately for Polly her sister Mary owns MBE and soonbooked her in for a session of Radio Frequency skintreatments and specialist Image Skincare products. TheRadio Frequency, a heat based treatment triggers renewal ofthe collagen and elastin deep in the layers of skin so ittightens and shrinks the skin and any open pores. It also getsthe lymphatic system working properly so all the toxins thathave built up drain away more quickly leaving skin lookingand feeling fresher.

“Being overweight and eating such a poor diet left mefeeling lethargic and tired,” added Polly, “so Martinsuggested the ‘five a day +’ supplement that helps boostenergy.”

In February Polly decided to tackle her weight gain. Her newhealthier lifestyle was melting the fat nicely and another

Radio Frequency session helped tighten the skin that wasnow starting to droop.

“As I lost weight I continued with a course of four moresessions. I was almost down to my target weight but washaving trouble shifting a couple of areas of fat around mymidriff and hips. Once again they came to my rescue withtheir Lipo Belt Body Sculpting fat reduction treatments. Atthe first session I lost 4cm and overall a total of 9cm cameoff just where I needed it to. I had six sessions altogetherbut it has made such a difference to how my clothes fit andto my confidence too!”

The good news is that if you’d also like to look ten yearsyounger, MBE on Shrewsbury Avenue have an amazing offerwhere you can enjoy £600 worth of treatments for just £475taken over six months.

I’m looking forward to November 3, becausethat’s the first day of the month-long local radiobroadcasts on Radio Peterborough 106.2fm. I’llbe on the lunchtime show between 10am and1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

However, I’m also on air Saturday AND Sundaybetween 10am and 1pm with Claire Tod in adouble weekend Keith and Claire. Thisextended Keith and Claire is by popular demand(of her husband as it keeps her out of the housefor longer!). We’re hoping to feature live localbands on Saturdays with some other liveentertainment on Sundays.

Make sure you tune into Radio Peterborough106.2fm to find out who’s featured. It’s on airfrom Sunday November 3, and one thing iscertain. It will be LIVE and it will be LOCAL forYOU!

Adrian Duffy & the Mayo Brothers havereleased a new single called Someone LikeYou and they have a video out to promote thesingle, filmed at Nene Valley Railway, whichwe’ve featured on our websitewww.espmag.co.uk

The band actually consist of the three DuffyBrothers Adrian (acoustic guitar, vocals, bass &mandolin), Chris (drums & percussion) andMelvin (pedal steel, slide & electric guitars, bass & vocals), who grew up around much ofEast Anglia. They went to school in Spaldingfor 5 years, and still have a lot of family andfriends in Peterborough, Stamford and Oundle(where their cousins Fenech-Soler are from).

The video was filmed on location at NeneValley Railway where some greatdramas/films have been shot over the years, including Silent Witness, Band Of Brothers,Golden Eye, Octopussy as well as music videosfor Queen, The Levellers and now The MayoBrothers.

“The whole team at Nene Valley Railwaywere wonderful,” Adrian told ESP, “as werethe many good friends and family who pulledout all the stops to make this happen for us…we owe you all big-time!!”

Melvin is one of the world’s foremost slide andpedal steel guitarists, and has toured for threeyears with Robbie Williams (did the businesson ‘Eternity’) and amongst the many great gigsworldwide, got to perform at Knebworth.

2013 for the band, has seen sessions and toursfor Mike Scott & The Waterboys andperformances with First Aid Kit on this year’sGlastonbury Pyramid Stage, and Someone LikeYou is the third EP taken from the current runof songs and comes in anticipation of a newalbum and UK & Ireland tour in 2014.

Through their uncles The Duffy Brothers, thelads spent a lot of their childhood backstagewith the likes of Tammy Wynette, CharliePride, Emmylou Harris, watching and learningfrom the good and the great, and you can seethose influences if you take a look at theimpressive new video. Also see how manylocal locations you can spot.

Following the success of its first Jazz Jam Night back in September, The Brewery Tapis to host this new regular event which judging by the initial reaction is set to takePeterborough by storm. The event is to be held on the third Sunday of every month. The evening is hosted by a ‘house’ jazz band formed of like-minded local musicianswho are passionate about jazz and blues and want to revive a music scene that’sseen a decline in presence in the city over the last couple of decades.

At last a professional ‘jam night’ run by musicians, for musicians. So if you’re a jazzmusician or just a lover of jazz, blues and funk it’s certainly worth supporting theinitiative. For more info phone the Brewery Tap on 01733 358500.

EDWIN STARRBAND THE TEAM Here is a tip off for soul fans. Stamford Corn Exchange plays hostto The Edwin Starr Band aka The Team on Saturday November23. It’ll be a great night featuring a lot of Northern Soul.

I can recommend it to you because a few years ago I had thepleasure of working with the band at Peterborough Festival inCathedral Square and they produced a pulsating show.

Since his untimely death in 2003, this original eight piece bandThe Team, keep the legend that was Edwin Starr and his music alive and in recent years they’ve beenfronted by Edwin’s younger brother, Angelo, who is a real showman. This year marks the 10th anniversaryof Edwin’s death. The one-off show will re-live Edwin’s hits, with soul and Motown classics as well asmaterial from The Team’s new album, Keeping The Faith.

Special guest for the evening is Lorraine Silver, a legend on the Northern Soul circuit and famed for the hitLost Summer Love.

It’s worth checking out both The Team and Lorraine on Google and as the mantra of the band is ‘we camehere to party for whoever, whenever, wherever!’ it’s definitely worth going along to see the show inStamford on Saturday November 23. Tickets are available on 01780 766455.

The legendary Eddi Reader visits Stamford CornExchange on Saturday November 16, as part of anational tour celebrating the release of a longawaited new single, Baby’s Boat taken from herforthcoming album Vagabond.

FENECH–SOLEREXPLAIN THEIR RITUALS

EDDI READER’SSTAMFORDATTRACTION

Ahead of the tour, I spoke with Eddi, whose captivating voice has entertainedthousands both on record and livethroughout a successful career withFairground Attraction, the Waterboys andher solo work. I began by asking her whywe’ve had to wait so long for newrecordings.

“Family life took over and I put my careeron hold for the last 5 years, but eventuallyyou get fed up with Judge Judy on TV, andI started writing, gradually turned thebasement into a studio, installed a mixingdesk in the kitchen and combined theediting with family life.

“ I assembled some really good musiciansfrom the Glasgow area and we had twomammoth live recording sessions whichproduced 27 pieces. Then we whittledthose down to produce the requirednumber of tracks for the new albumVagabond which is released in February. Itdoesn’t mean that the others are forgottenthough. I hope some of them will form thebasis for another album in the future.”

With Fairground Attraction you achieveda number one with Perfect and I think it’ssuch a pure sound. Did you see itspotential when you first heard it?

“Yes straightaway. Mark Nevin wrote itand it is a brilliant song. I’m not a greatsongwriter, but I feel I’m a betterinterpreter of music, and I could see clearlythat with such a great bass and drumrhythm, then the song had great potential. The very first time that Mark played it tome, I knew it was right on the money.”

What about your solo hit, Patience ofAngels?

“Well although it was successful, and I’mvery proud of it as a song, I was neverentirely happy with the actual recordingparticularly at the end. My record label atthe time, Warner Brothers, insisted thatwe spend a lot of money on a producer.

They called the shots and so hired aprofessional producer, rather than amusician and to me the recording reflectedthat lack of feel in the final. I decided fromthen, that I wouldn’t work with peoplewho aren’t from a musical background, when I’m producing music. After all, youwouldn’t allow someone who hasn’tstudied medicine to operate on you.”

It sounds like you enjoy, but at thesame time are very serious about yourmusic. Will that be reflected inStamford?

“Very much so. I do enjoy recordingbecause that song is a permanent memoryof your work, but the raw excitement of alive performance is something that I’vemissed and I’m really looking forward tothis tour. I hear Stamford Corn Exchange isan exciting venue for live music, and so Ihope the evening will be a success.”

I know a lot of people have waited forEddi’s reappearance, I’m sure her wish willcome true.

The night features special guest KieranGoss and tickets are £20 on 01780 766455.

The year is 2006 and four guys from KingsCliffe are sat in a front room plotting theirmaster-plan. Their goal? Simple, to conquerthe world with Indie Electronica. Fastforward seven years and fresh off a toursupporting American fashion punksParamore, Fenech-Soler are ready toexecute phase two of their master-planentitled Rituals. ESP’s Alex Jones caught upwith Ross and Dan from the band to talkabout their journey so far, the new albumand setting their sights for Europe.

Championed by Radio 1, cracking the Top40, extensive touring and a cancer scare. One might think after a debut campaign ashectic and at times terrifying as theirs thatFenech-Soler have earned a little time tothemselves. To the band however thiscouldn't have been further from their minds.

Ross – “We didn't really have a break wefinished touring around Christmas and wentstraight into the studio January.”

In 2011 lead singer Ben Duffy wasdiagnosed with testicular cancer forcing theband to cancel a number of appearancesand put their touring ambitions on hold.Naturally this was a hard time for the band.

Two years on and Ben's fighting fit,how was it to be in the band duringsuch a turbulent time?

Dan – “It was obviously a massive shockinitially and we just wanted to make surethat Ben was going to be OK. We just triedto carry on as normal and looked ahead tothe summer. Our first gig back wasscheduled to be Glastonbury so we markedthat as a time when we hoped Ben wouldbe fit again.”

The new album Rituals is a cavalcadeof synthesizers and pop hooks, howmany hours did the band sit in front of akeyboard making it?

Dan – “I think we spent the best part of ayear! After the ups and downs of the firstalbum we just wanted to spend some timedoing what we wanted and to make surethat the record was bigger and better thanthe last.”

Ross – “We feel it sounds better as analbum and when you listen to it you can tellthat it was made over a certain period oftime.”

Now you can focus on the live side ofthings, you've just finished supportingParamore for a section of their arenatour, how was that?

Dan – “Fantastic, it was one of thosethings that we got invited on and weweren't sure if the musical mix would gelbut it worked well and for me it was one ofthe most fun tours I've been on.

“It was also nice to get out and play somebig crowds in Europe because most of theshows we've been doing have beenpredominantly UK based.”

We noticed there wasn't aPeterborough date on your upcomingUK tour, are there any plans for ahomecoming show?

Dan – “Yeah in our November tour I thinkthe closest show is at Nottingham butwe've got a tour which has been pencilledin for the new year so hopefully we can geta Peterborough date in on that!”

At the moment the Peterborough musicscene is under the spotlight, obviouslyyourselves coming from Kings Cliffeand We Are Fiction being championedby BBC Introducing, have you got anyadvice you'd like to give to local bandsabout how to progress in the industry?

Ross – “Play a lot of shows and get outthere, recording as much as possible, youcan do so much at your own house now andthat’s what we used to do because studioscan be so expensive for bands starting up.

“Get out to other areas, we always tried toget down to London as much as possiblebecause things move quickly down therebut also build up a local fan base. That's theway to do it.'
