Nowadays English is necessary to operate eectively in a globalized world.
Globalization is perhaps best understood as referring to a processes in the
economic social technological cultural political and ecological spheres wherebyglobal connectivity integration and interdependence are constantly increasing. !ut
it aects language use as well and English has become the current "global
language#. $onse%uently ESP courses are likely to be designed for adult learners&
since this new approach to language teaching has been developed to meet the
changing needs of students who are generally adults in need to learn the speci'c
language for their vocational or academic purposes and thus be more competent
in their 'elds of e(pertise besides adults count on self) direction.
*he 'rst thing that needs to be said is that ESP courses are designed to meet the
speci'c needs of the learner. *his means that they are able to use what they learn
in the ESP classroom right away in their work and studies.
*he second argument is that the learners of ESP courses are mostly adults.
+ third point to be raised is that adult learners count on self)direction meaningthat ESP is concerned with turning learners into users thus students must havefreedom to decide when what and how they will study.

,n the contrary some people argue against this statement. ,ne argument is that
ESP could be ad-usted to the needs of any learner not only those who study a
speci'c discipline or science. +s udley)Evans and St. /ohn have asserted "ESP
courses are likely to be designed for adult learners# but may be organized "forlearners at secondary school level#. 0ikewise they have pointed out that ESP
courses may be planned for the beginners along with intermediate or advanced
students.
