Overview of Miller Curriculum
The design of the elementary instructional program in Houston County addresses the curriculum areas of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health and safety, music, art and physical education. An emphasis is placed on language arts and computational skills and on the integration of all subject areas.
The elementary Language Arts program provides a comprehensive approach to literacy, including reading, writing, conventions, listening, speaking and viewing. These components are addressed through research-based instruction. The adopted language arts materials include leveled libraries, classroom libraries, and big books. Additional teacher resources provide the tools to address the components of a balanced literacy framework. Early Intervention Program provides accelerated instruction for identified students in kindergarten through grade five.

Overview of Miller Curriculum
• The Mathematics program is designed to provide experiences in which children have the opportunity to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and build competency in basic skills. Math instruction should provide time daily for Maintenance of Concepts, Practice of Skills, and New Instruction. Manipulative and other hands-on math materials are used in combination with the printed resources to teach the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.
• The Social Studies program is sequenced to provide elementary students with a foundation in United States history including symbols of the United States, biographies of famous Americans, Georgia history, the history of democracy, and the structure of government in the United States. Geographical regions and economic concepts are studied at each grade level. Houghton-Mifflin is the adopted series in Social Studies.

Overview of Miller Curriculum
• The Science curriculum seeks to give the student a perspective of the world’s environment and man’s place in it. All branches of Science are explored and hands-on experiences are encouraged.
• In an effort to promote the fine arts, the system has employed specialists in the areas of music and art to serve all elementary schools. All elementary students are required by Georgia law to have 90 contact hours in health and physical education each year. All Houston County Schools have physical education teachers assigned; therefore, a well-planned health and physical education program is available for all students.
