WeLCOMe

Edmonton has always had a rich and vibrant musical landscape, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is proud to have been a part of it for a very long time. We’ve come a long way from concerts at the Empire and Capitol Theatres, but one thing hasn’t changed – we’re still here to make great music for our community and have a whole lot of fun doing so.

Edmonton’s colourful history is celebrated with our ‘Roaring 20s’ look this year (photographed at Fort Edmonton Park), but our season is, as always, filled with irresistible music from baroque to today.

Have a look for yourself, and make your plans to join us. We’re thrilled to welcome back some of your favourite guest soloists and conductors, and you’ll meet

some talented performers making their Edmonton debuts as well. There are works that I’ve been wanting to perform with the fabulous musicians of the ESO for a long time, plus music that has never been heard here before.

Good music knows no boundaries, whether it’s a symphony from 200 years ago or a daring new work. This orchestra literally does it all, and we’re eager to present it to you. So all aboard the ESO Express! It’s the cat’s meow, the bee’s knees – well, you get the idea.

Peace,

William Eddins,Music Director

BECAuSE OF YOuR GENEROSITY. . .

The ESO can continue to present over 80 concerts per year, including our Symphony for kids series specifically designed for our youngest ESO fans. The ESO is able to provide music and music education programs for 30,000 students each year – an essential resource as programs continue disappearing from the classroom. We continue to be a financially stable orchestra that nurtures our musical community.

WHAT A dIFFERENCE $50 MAkES!

An anonymous donor is matching 100% of any new or additional gift to the ESO. If just 140 new donors gave $50 each, the ESO would raise $14,000. This would mean that 1,600 Grade k to 3 students could attend an additional performance of our Music Education program. Please consider a gift with your subscription today!

“If music is going to be part of our grandkids’ lives, then it’s up to us.”-Geoff and Kathy Frisby, ESO subscribers & donors

EduCATION CONCERTSEach season, the ESO presents weekday education concerts for close to 30,000 children from kindergarten to Grade 12, from Edmonton and surrounding areas. These educational programs, aligned with Alberta curriculum and tailored to specific grade levels, offer unique, varied and interactive learning opportunities for students of all ages. Teachers receive study guides and participate in webinars, both of which offer suggestions for hands-on activities which will help them to connect what their students experience at the Winspear Centre with their classroom learning.

uPBEAT!Schools with modest budgets can apply for grants through Upbeat! tohelp cover the costs of attending ESO Education concerts. With support from a generous, anonymous donor, we are able to provide a limited number of classrooms with complimentary tickets.

MuSICIANS IN THE MAkINGReady to reveal your talent and gain that all-important experience of per-forming before a live audience? We’re looking for student soloists and small ensembles to perform 45-minute show-cases in the Winspear Centre lobby prior to select ESO performances. Participants are then invited to attend that evening’s concert for free!

YOuNG COMPOSERS PROJECT The ESO invites high school students who are passionate about composing to apply for the rare opportunity to receive compositional mentorship with the ESO’s Composer in Residence Robert Rival. One student will receive a $1,000 bursary towards post-secondary studies, compose a new work and hear it performed by the ESO for 2,500 patrons at Symphony Under the Sky.

AdOPT-A-PLAYERSchools across Edmonton and surrounding areas have the unique opportunity to invite ESO musicians into their classrooms! Students will be visited multiple times by their Musician Mentor, who will guide them in creating an original piece of music which they will then perform on-stage at the Winspear Centre.

Robert began playing the violin early in life, after being inspired by an appearance on Sesame Street by Itzhak Perlman. Robert went on to study violin performance at the University of Ottawa and the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Morry kernerman, David Stewart (Acting ESO Concertmaster in 92-93) and Pinchas Zukerman.

Most recently Concertmaster of Symphony Nova Scotia, Robert has also performed as Associate Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic in the Netherlands and Guest Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has worked as concertmaster with many of the world’s top conductors, including Valery Gergiev and kurt Masur.Robert’s recital and chamber music performances have included prestigious venues including the Lincoln Center in

New York, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam and the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. He has also been the recipient of many prizes and awards, most notably the prestigious Hugo kortschak Award from the Manhattan School of Music and top prizes in the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition and the Canadian Music Competition.

As part of the selection process, Robert was the Guest Concertmaster at four performances with the ESO in the fall of 2012 and completed a final audition in January. Along with his wife Laura and their two children, Robert is excited to move to Edmonton this summer, and will join the ESO at the beginning of the 2013-2014 Season.

The Concertmaster’s chair is endowed by the John & Barbara Poole Family.
