So you are coming to Bratislava?

We would like to take this opportunity and introduce you our capital city from the eyes of people like you – Erasmus students who studied here last year. Before we enter into sections with all that administrative and technical information, take a moment to see, how ERASMUS changed life of your fellow ERASMUS people, who came here before you.

It was an incredible experience for me with the best Erasmus people. Also the city, Bratislava, was amazing because it was so lovely and cute and so on. I just regret because of not choosing to go also in first semester…

(Matea, EUBA)

Best experience of my life so far! So many new and nice friendships and acquaintanceships, living in a vibrant dorm, great courses at university and possibilities to travel. if you left out Slovak bureaucracy, it would be absolutely perfect… (Yagmur, EUBA)

I never expected that Bratislava, that amazing unknown city, would become in my second place. It meant my whole Erasmus, from the beginning till the end. Loads of new experiences, mix of cultures and true friends from every parts of Europe made that my Slovak Erasmus year was, is and will be unforgettable… (Carmen, PEU)

Try to find something "bigger" than parties. Travel alone, open conversations, push your limits. Read a book, you will have time for it. Take your time to find what you love Be original! Find your style! These are the things that Bratislava taught me… (Enrique, PEU)

I have a lively time in Bratislava. The City is very exciting, you can find many nice spots. The faculty was also nice and the people are extremely kind. Only the student dormitory Mlada Garda was not so habitably… (Mila, STUBA)

Getting started with ERASMUS…

Something about accommodation in Bratislava

Accommodation is one of the most important things as you already know for sure.

Everybody got to have a roof over their heads and without accommodation you will not even

receive residence permit. However, we know that in time of Survival Guide release we are

already far beyond dormitory application deadlines, so this page will focus on giving you

useful tips about accommodation in Bratislava and showing you what possibilities of

accommodation exist here.

Tips about accommodation

Please, always understand the most basic rule:

“Each University has a specific dormitory and it is very exceptional

that you receive a stay in dormitory not dedicated to your school!”

For example, Mlyny are almost absolutely dedicated to Comenius University

students. There were cases where some of students of other Universities (for

example PEU students in summer semester 2013) received permit to stay

here. However, that depends on agreement between this particular University

and Dormitory management, so please never rally on that.

“In case you are curious about something – don’t hesitate to ask! For this reason,

we created the F.A.Q google doc, which we check out regularly to help you.”

The link for this F.A.Q is here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Hx4V5KtVNa_saNlUb359i2O1eanWpeqg9_oJ-2-

faQ8/edit?usp=sh .If you are viewing a printed version, look it up on our FB page. By asking

a question, the question remains in the document and with more and more questions you

help more ERASMUS students who come after you. Help yourself by helping others!

“You are going to an university dormitory, not high school dormitory.”

We got a lot of questions about regime which is on dormitories. Don’t be afraid, it

is pretty liberal. In all of them, guests are allowed (however until certain hour)

and dormitories are opened also during night. Just be sure that you always carry

residence card with you, since mostly in evening your identity may be verified.

To give you a hint… security is variously tight everywhere. It is much easier

to get your guests into your dormitory room in night in Mlada Garda than

in Uninova Hostel. However, it all depends on the present service

down in the lobby. Some guards are more benevolent than others.

“Don’t worry, be relaxed… dormitory management has to issue you a

statement or respond you, after all… you are business for them.”

You don’t need to be afraid that dormitory will not respond to your application. We

understand that you want to have everything set up as soon as possible to enjoy the

summer but please mind that dormitory management also has right for vacation. This is the

most prominent reason why dormitories are taking their time to answer. Always check for

deadlines. Concerning your premature ending of accommodation, it is possible to cancel

the rent on dormitory. However, always check your contract and its part “termination of

contract”. Since this is business, the dorm may require reparation or replacement for you.

Such a contract sample can be found on this link (most dorms have something similar):

“If you are looking for an apartment, do it when you come here personally.

Trust us, you will find something eventually, you always do!”

If your University does not give you dormitory suited to your tastes

and for whatever reason you prefer an apartment, don’t do the basic

mistake everyone does: Don’t expect the apartment to be found when

you search online offers without you personally meeting with the apartment

owner. Can you imagine that you would rent an apartment to somebody

you have never met before and that person would be a student?

Most certainly not. Other than that, you are required to be personally

present in signing of contract. Due to the high demand for apartments

during August and September, the apartment owner will favor local buyers.

We advise you to contact ESN or local persons and

research possibilities first. After that, prepare for

getting a temporary stay either in dorm or hostel. We

can reassure you that you are not the only one in the

same situation and you will find very soon that many

people are interested in getting a flat too. Join them and

trust us, you will not have a problem to get apartment in

the end of September or October when the market is

more flexible!

Apartments in Bratislava

Again, In case of private apartment rental it is recommended to sign a lease with your

future landlord defining precisely the terms of the stay in the apartment. The apartments

should be provided with basic pots, dishes, linens, etc. Majority of apartments have

washing machines, but automatic dryers are not used. Useful site for this is www.reality.sk

which is also in English. If you choose to rent an apartment, we strongly suggest you to

consult it with your Erasmus coordinator or buddy. Prices per person vary deeply depending

on location, number of persons and the space inside the apartment.

Page 9: ESN Survival Guide BA 2013-2014

Page| 9

Optimal price for person per month is around 150 € with energy costs included. Deposit and

provision for agency may also be included. Just another advice: If you believe that you are

a good actor, try to persuade the owner that you are a worker rather than student. It might

higher up your chances. People generally don’t like wild students on their property.

How to deal with Foreign policy in Slovakia?

Residence report is by law required process that none of us likes, however it is necessary

for your legal stay in Slovak republic during ERASMUS. Of course, big difference is, whether

you are EU citizen or not. The more lucky ones are EU citizens. However, due to valid

European Union law, also EU citizens have to report their residence in Slovak Republic if

they are staying for more than three months (which is case of all of you). Process of EU

citizens is by far easier than Non-EU citizens. This section provides you with basic

information how to report residence either as EU citizen or Non-EU citizen.

1) EU-citizens:

Nationals of the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland do not need

visa for entering Slovakia. If you go to dormitory, the dormitory takes care of residence

permit for you. In that case, you give the dormitory 2x 3x3,5

colored photo and fill the form below. If you go to apartment,

you do all these things mentioned alone. All in all, you should

register at the appropriate foreign police office within 10 days

after your arrival to Slovakia.

While applying, you need:

1. ID Card (standard one you carry),

2. Fee stamp – 4,5 € and 2x 3x3,5 colored photo,

4. This form filled

http://www.minv.sk/swift_data/source/policia/hranicna_a_cudzinecka_policia/ocp/ziados

ti/pobyt/Hlasenie_pobytu_AJ.pdf (fill it up at home, print it and just bring it here with you),

5. Accommodation approval letter

- Normally dorm does that. If you are in apartment, the rent contract between you and

apartment owner certified by notarial act is required. It has to be exactly mentioned in the

contract that you as student live there. Signatures have to be certified along with the copy

of ownership list. Documents cannot be older than 90 days. The easier way is for the

apartment owner to make the declaration of oath that you students live there –

Only the signature of apartment owner certified by notarial act is required here.

Page 18: ESN Survival Guide BA 2013-2014

Page| 18

Police has 30 days to decide. After you receive the decision, you have 30 days to undergo

medical examination.

2) Non-EU-citizens:

The situation with non-EU citizens, as we said before, is more complicated. You need to

take care of things yourself. For application you need:

1. Passport,

2. Filled application,

http://www.minv.sk/swift_data/source/policia/hranicna_a_cudzinecka_policia/ocp/ziados

ti/pobyt/udelenie_prechodneho_pobytu_2013.pdf (Fill it at home! So you wont forget to ask

your family about their information /each year, it is regular problem/),

3. Original of confirmation letter from the University which admits you on ERASMUS,

4. Confirmation of the grant which your home University gave you or statement of account

that you have enough money to stay here which is equivalent of

198,9 € x number of months you stay in Slovakia,

5. Foreign criminal records certificate together with apostille

translated to Slovak language by Slovak certified translator,

6. Slovak criminal records certificate (which you get on Kvetná 13,

opposite to Miletičová market) with which you need a birth

certificate translated to Slovak language,

7. Results of medical examination (REQUIRED!) and Health insurance translated to Slovak

language by Slovak certified translator,

9. 3x 3x3, 5 colored photography of your pretty face,

10. Accommodation approval letter

- This one is issued by your Dormitory, you have to ask management for that.

- Same as this particular matter above in EU section.

Remember no document can be older than 90 days!!!

The foreign police department can be found on Hrobáková 44 in Bratislava. Each ESN

section usually helps you each year with these matters. Please deal with these things as

soon as possible. Contact your Section board or, even better, your buddy to help you with

residence permit.

Transportation

Public Transport

If you need to travel further afield within the city, the best way to do so is by public

transport.

Bratislava has a comprehensive network of public transport lines running at regular

intervals according to defined timetables. Departure times and a list of destinations, with

the journey time to each, are posted for each service at every stop it serves.

Bus, tram and trolleybus last departures from terminal stops are at about 11pm. The first

services in the morning normally start at about 4.20am. Between 11.30pm and 5am, several

night bus services (their numbers are prefixed with an 'N') operate in Bratislava, most of

them starting at the main railway station. You must validate a pre-purchased ticket upon

boarding by inserting your ticket into one of the red devices found on board each vehicle.

Tickets are available for:

a 15-minute, single-ride journey (€0.70);

a 60-minute, multi-ride journey (€0.90);

24 hours (€4.50);

48 hours (€8.30);

72 hours (€10.00);

1 week (€15.00).

If you are travelling with a large bag it

needs a (reduced-fare) ticket too. A joint

60-minute ticket for one passenger plus

one bag is available for €1.30.

You can buy the tickets from newspaper shops, and from the yellow coin-operated

machines located close to many stops (but be aware of the fact that in few stops, the

machines are nowhere to be found!).

The website where you can find everything about public transport is www.imhd.sk. If you are

a customer of one of Slovak mobile operators, you can use 70-minute SMS ticket which

costs 1 € and includes fee for baggage. SMS ticket is valid also for night lines and can be

Page 20: ESN Survival Guide BA 2013-2014

Page| 20

bought by sending empty message to 1100. You must wait for return message before

boarding.

Prepaid tickets:

You can travel with prepaid tickets without limit in all zones for which the prepaid ticket is

valid. This is the most recommended option. You will need personal contactless chip card

issued by transport operator in order to buy prepaid ticket.

Prepaid tickets are valid also for night lines in Bratislava without additional fee. You can

get student chip card, but you have to submit a confirm about attendance of school. For

this, contact your Erasmus coordinator or ESN section to give you more information.

Usually, the head of international department in school will be eligible to issue you such a

confirm. You can purchase all sort of tickets for single journey, tourist tickets as well as

prepaid tickets at the public transport

operator's shops.

Prices - Reduced fare:

30 days = 13, 40 €

90 days = 35, 90 € (the most recommended

one!)

365 days = 131, 90

Taxis

There are lot of licensed taxi companies in Bratislava. Make sure the meter is running

before he takes off (! because you´re foreigners, some taxi drivers can misuse that and

you could pay more!). It is cheaper to order a taxi by phone than to hail one on the street.

Sometimes the taxi services have a fixed minimum (usually 3, 50€). Taxi drivers are

obliged to issue receipts on request. In case you suspect that the taxi driver asks too

much charge for the service, always ask for one. We cannot do anything without it!

Airlines and Airports

If you want to fly to Bratislava, you can choose between the city's own international airport

and Schwechat airport in Vienna, which is about 45 km from Bratislava and connected by

regular shuttle buses. Bratislava's airport is the biggest in Slovakia and one of the fastest

expanding in Europe.

Regular flights link it to other Slovak cities

and with many major European

destinations. A city bus service, number

61, connects the airports to the main

railway station and onward connections to

the city center. It normally takes 15

minutes by car to the center.

Rail Travel

Trains in Slovakia are the safest and most agreeable way to travel throughout the country.

International trains to Bratislava's main railway station run from Vienna (1 hour), Budapest

(3 hours), and Prague (4-5 hours) several times a day.

Sounds good doesn’t it?

How can you get one?

As you will see, it is going to be pretty easy. The distribution of card depends on each ESN

section policy. Most likely you will be offered one in your Welcome package in the beginning

of semester, together with ESN card which provides you further benefits on your ERASMUS

stay.

In compliance with Slovak law, it will be required of you to fill in basic information about

yourself (such as name, address, ID number and so on). If you desire to get your card

before September, this information will be given to your local ESN section which will move it

to O2 database. However, after September, O2 will provide you with online form which we

will give you link to when its prepared.

We would also like to notify you that your new card will not have credit loaded from the

start, so after obtaining one you will have to load it.

For further information, check Erasmus 2013/2014 Facebook group which link is also

provided in Survival Guide or contact your local ESN Section.

In case you are interested in other mobile providers, these are all choices to pick from:

Orange http://www.orange.sk/

O2 http://www.o2.sk/

Telekom http://www.telekom.sk/

following with smaller ones:

Funfon (owned by Orange) http://www.funfon.sk/

Tesco Mobile (owned by O2) http://www.tescomobile.sk/

However, aside from O2, ESN did not secure deals with the other providers, so we strongly

recommend to use the O2 Fair program, which was arranged to make you skip all the trouble

getting the card all by yourself.. Hope you have fun calling home or calling with your

friends all day, all night

Tourism around Bratislava

In the neighborhood of Trnava city lie mountains

Little Carpathy. Special charm give them ruins of

watch castles Ostrý Kameň, Dobrá Voda and

Smolenice, which use to protect passing through

the Little Carpathians. Interesting are also some

villages in surroundings of Trnava. On the edge

of the Trnava Downs under the Little Carpathians

lies Smolenice village. The tourist path

„Smolenice karts“ pass through the territory of national monument „Molpir fort“, where

was discovered old Celtic settlement.

In the neighborhood in situated national nature reserve, Driny cave, the only

cave open for the public in this region. The village Dolna Krupa lies

Page 29: ESN Survival Guide BA 2013-2014

Page| 29

at foothills of Little Carpathians, in wall of Krupiansky creek. Nice forests circling the

village provide to the visitors pleasant relax.

In the center of the village is located classicistic castle with large English park. In the

rococo chalet, which relict of construction progress of the castle, used to dwell world-

famous music composer Ludwig van Beethoven and he composed here his well known

„Moon Light Sonata“. Water reservoirs „Boleraz“, „Bukova“ and „Sucha nad Parnou“ with

nearby cottage colonies and camps attract lovers of water sports and fishery.

Red Stone Castle

In the 13th century Queen Konstancia had

chosen a suitable area for its construction. It

was the Mount Kukla, the large watcher of a

valley situated in the Small Carpathians. The

name of brook which flows through this area

is Gidra. After digging out a basement and

bringing building material very strange things

started to happen. Some parts of a building already constructed in one day, were the

following day replaced over the valley to the opposite mount. Builders though didn’t give

up. They were supposed to erect the castle at Kukla – the most dominant Mount of the

Small Carpathians visible in the far distance. Therefore they kept on doing their job. At the

same time they searched for insoluble causes of night transfers.

From the old people remembering past times they learned that Kukla was the home of

mysterious powers - sprites and giants. Nobody could ever see them but their presence

was evident. People could feel a magical power of the mount. Night by night the material

was replaced to the opposite mount. The Queen finally gave up and the castle was erected

exactly at the place where mysterious powers kept on replacing building material.

All problems stopped from this moment and the building was fortunately finished. The

castle still stands today. And this is it as to the story of Red Stone Castle formation. Red

stone is opened for public during the year, check

YOUR ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK What is ESN? Erasmus Student‘s Network (ESN) either as ESN Bratislava or our respective Bratislava

sections -

ESN PEU, ESN EUBA, ESN VSEMVS, ESN STUBA is here to make your Erasmus extraordinary. Our

idea is simple. We are volunteers who understand the value of help and what difference it

can make if somebody helps you out somewhere where you are alone for the first time.

It is truth that many people like to be thrown in the water but on the other hand, imagine

that you would come to a country not knowing anything or anybody and from that point on

you would have to arrange everything alone. It is better to know that there is somebody

here to help you with all that stuff in the beginning, isn’t it? This is why ESN exists.

Aside that, we recognize that there may be some third parties which would like to profit on

you, as you are new in this environment and some people just easily find a way how to prey

on you (as the taxi services mentioned above, for example). We, as Non-profit

organization, are strictly forbidden to profit from Erasmus students as ESN is first of all

created in compliance with European Union education projects.

We hope that you appreciate all the hard work of ESN on your Erasmus, and who knows,

maybe you join up with your local ESN section when you return back home to your

University.

More specifically, ESN wants to make your life better and easier by:

1. Giving you „buddy“- local Slovak student who will pick you up, help you with all

difficulties in the beginning and be there for you,

2. Making you awesome Welcome week in the beginning,

3. Organizing Trips, Parties, Sport, Cultural and Social events,

4. Giving you chance to know Slovak people and culture,

5. Helping you with all exhausting technical and administrative stuff,

What is a „Buddy“?

Buddies are volunteers, who want to improve their language skills, spend some time and

have fun

with international students. All of them speak English and some of them even other

languages.

How to get a buddy?

The way of getting a buddy greatly depends on each ESN section policy. Smaller sections

prefer individual assignment of buddies such as ESN PEU or ESN VSEMVS. Larger sections

prefer using online-registration forms such as ESN EU. To get a buddy, write a message to

ESN section of your University in Bratislava to tell you more about it.

Also, we strongly recommend that you try to get a local student from the university you are

from, since it is hard to imagine that student from Economic University could help you sort

out issues with your lectures on Slovak Technical University.

And what will your BUDDY do?

- contact you by e-mail a couple weeks before the semester

starts,

- PICK you UP at the airport, train or bus station and help you

with the accommodation in the Dormitories,

- help you get your student card and public transportation

pass,

- show you their favorite pub and teach you how to drink Slovak

beer :-)

Do you want your Slovak Buddy?

Contact your ESN section and maybe you start a friendship for lifetime.

How does ESN in Bratislava work?

ESN Bratislava itself is not an ESN Section.

However, since there is really no need to make

differences (ERASMUS students make friends

everywhere and don’t discriminate based on

University) we are also working together to provide

you all bigger and more fun events. Nowadays ESN

Bratislava is built from sections mentioned below.

Here is a small intro to all our partnership

sections:

Page 34: ESN Survival Guide BA 2013-2014

Page| 34

ESN EU

ESN EU is considered to be one of the biggest sections in Bratislava taking care of

more than 200 incoming students annually. As the number of Erasmus students is

increasing, so does the number of the active members of the Buddy system who are

inevitable part of ESN team. Are you going to study on Economic University? Do you want a

buddy? Just register on

http://eu.esn.sk/sectionbox_forms/foreign_student_registration_form and we will give

you one! Thus, we can guarantee more focused and personal approach towards each of you

and at the same time it will allow us to participate in more challenging projects in the

future.

Also, each semester, the section helps the incoming students after their arrival and

in the cooperation with other sections in Bratislava it organizes trips, events and many

other interesting activities which make the stay of foreign students in Slovakia enjoyable.

Looking forward to see you all!

ESN STUBA

ESN STUBA is an Erasmus Student Network section of Slovak University of Technology

and is also one of the ESN BA partnership sections. We were created as a section in

December 2012 and from this month on we are trying to improve ERASMUS of STUBA and

participate in all of Bratislava projects.

We are here to provide you with information about any problem arising in relation to

Erasmus, we are eager to create opportunities for Slovak and foreign students and promote

their mutual cooperation. We want to break down barriers between nations and encourage

communication among them.

One of the main ways of communication is a buddy system in which every foreign student

gets his Slovak "tourist guide" student. If you study at Slovak University of Technology and

got interested in our Buddy send us an email to [email protected].

ESN VSEMvs

We are young section, one of 5 in Bratislava. Since we are new section and small

one (as for students' income/outcome, not in spirit) we rely on cooperation with ESN

Bratislava. Thanks to this, we are able to provide a rich experience for our foreign students

and ensure that they will never forget about their Erasmus. We are also working on joint

projects of ESN Bratislava which can (and will) bring more and easier integration of foreign

students and thanks to that, they will experience the best semester of their life.

We are non-formal group of students. Main working group consists from board and

five buddies with help of other students from our school. Students who returned from the

Erasmus this year (as our school started with Erasmus last year – 2010/2011) are big help

but some of them don’t have enough time to be part of our buddy system so they

participate only when they can.

Most stores are open Monday - Friday from 8:00am to 6pm, and on Saturday from 8:00am to

12:00(noon). The large department stores and shopping centers have longer opening hours

(9:00am-21:00pm) and are opened even on Sundays and bank holidays. Some supermarkets

are open 24 hours every day.

Do you want a pizza straight to you in your dormitory/apartment? There are many pizza

delivery services in Bratislava and you can find all of them on google.com. For example,

http://www.pizzamizza.sk/ delivers pizza until 10pm and prizes are moving around

5€/pizza (depends on pizza plus delivery fee). This is similar to other deliveries in the city.

3. Postal services

Bratislava's imposing main post office is on SNP Square

(Námestie SNP 35) and is open 7 days a week (till 2pm

on Sundays). Few of the staff speak English, and there

are a daunting number of ornate wooden counters to

choose from: just look for signs saying 'známky'

(postage stamps) if you want to send a letter. The

national postal operator, Slovenská Pošta, has a website (http://www.posta.sk/en),

though no one seems to have got round to translating its 'English version' into English yet.

Typical Slovakia!

Page| 45

4. Smoking information

Smoking is popular in Slovakia – around a third of people regularly light up – and until

recently it was difficult to find a non-smoking restaurant or bar. However, new laws

introduced in 2009 mean that any establishment serving food must now be non-smoking, or

that smokers must at least be separated from the non-smoking area by a permanent wall.

Rules for bars are different, and smoking in pubs is still common.

Technically, bars are defined as places that do not serve food, but some still do

(apparently redefining their meals as 'snacks' in order to

sidestep the regulations).

City-center cafes are generally non-smoking, and teashops

(čajovňa) and fast-food outlets uniformly so, though in the

summer smoking is permitted on outdoor terraces.

You will find that smoking is common at most late-night venues.

Smoking is prohibited on all public transport (and anywhere in or

near a station or stop), and at hospitals, schools, universities,

To buy cigarettes, you must be over 18. Most of the big international cigarette brands are

widely available and can be bought at kiosks, newspaper stands, filling stations and most

supermarkets. Restaurants, cafes and pubs also commonly sell cigarettes. These are often

listed on their menus, though the choice may be limited; some pubs have cigarette

vending machines, which offer a wider range. There are also several tobacconists in the

city center selling loose tobacco and other smoking products.
