Occupations using languages• Essential:

– translating– interpreting– teaching

• Useful:– commercial functions– finance– governmental organisations– information– media– transport & tourism

www.prospects.ac.uk/links/Languages

Page 10: Esml Finalists Talk Sept 09

Degrees of Difference• In Europe:

– Degrees are considered vocational – So UK arts and social science graduates may have

a tougher time being considered for commercial functions

– Students usually spend longer getting their degrees

– Masters are more the norm– Work experience is more important than

extracurricular activities – Not all UK professional qualifications are

recognised

So will I be able to work abroad?

• TEFL, volunteering and casual work most likely if you want to go straight away

• Many multinationals recruit primarily within individual countries so need to find out as don’t notify us

• If recruited in UK except to be home based initially• Job hunting in Europe is becoming easier with

vacancies and company information now readily accessible via the Internet

Some thoughts about Careers

• A career is a journey not a destination– Expect high mobility in the immediate 3 to 4 years after

graduation

• You will need to make many turns and overcome many obstacles to create the path you desire– The 'perfect' career does not exist

• When you come to a roadblock take a detour – If what you start with is not what you want, you will still

develop useful skills, useful in other areas

• A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step– Make some sort of decision, however imperfect
