American National University’s English Language Institute offers English as a Second Language classes for all levels, from beginning to advanced and provides a transitional experience for international students who are looking for an introduction to the American education system and college culture.

This program is an excellent start to your American education studies and provides a comprehensive academic and culturalexperience designed to help you improve your English language skills.Class work is based on four language skills. The beginning through intermediate courses concentrate on listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills. The American National University intensive ESL program meets professional standards in the field of ESL, and holds institutional membership in the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC).

Get a quality education.Class SizeOur small class size allows each student a maximum amount of individual attention and an opportunity to develop conversational skills.Program ObjectivesThe ESL curriculum was developed to prepare international students to improve their English for academic and professional purposes. The approach is rigorous; students are in classes for five hours per day including two lab hours per week, giving students a minimum of twenty- five classroom hours each week. Students are also expected to complete several hours of homework each day.

CurriculumESL class work is based on four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All language skills, fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English are emphasized throughout all coursework. Each level can be completed in one term, allowing students to complete the entire program within one calendar year.

Engage in a new learning experience.Tuition and FeesThe estimated tuition cost per eight week term is $2,550. Books are included. Other one-time and per-term fees include:

TOEFL® Exam Fee $50 (Optional)

How to ApplyUpon receipt of required documentation (application, financial guarantee letter, a copy of your passport or picture ID, and application fee of US$50), materials will be reviewed and at this point your status will be conditionally accepted. You will be notified within approximately seven business days of your acceptance.

Our experienced ESL admissions staff will work with you through the process of applying for an I-20 andgaining entry to the United States in order to pursue the ESL program at American National University.LocationAmerican National University offers ESL classes at its Roanoke Valley, VA campus and at its Tysons Corner, VA* location.

Additional Services and ProgramsInternational Student Services provides an array of activities and support services for students, including airport transfers upon arrival, and ongoing support such as transportation arrangements for physician and dental appointments and free tutoring. Our Roanoke campus offers regular trips to local cultural attractions and shopping excursions.

* American National University’s Tysons Corner location operates as a campus addition of its Roanoke Valley, VA campus.

ESL students study with us for a variety of reasons: upon completion of the ESL program, some will pursue degrees at ANU or another American institution; others are looking to improve their communications skills in English or to improve their TOEFL® or IELTS® test scores. Regardless, the faculty and staff at American National University will do their utmost to help you realize your goals.

Our International Student Services staff will provide you with assistance in findingaffordable and safe housing solutions and will introduce you to other ESL program students easing your transition to living in a new country.Our team of ESL program representatives will be there to pick you up at the airport, get you settled in, and help you throughout your time at the English Language Institute.

Students heading to the United States for study may be apprehensive about a new country with unfamiliar customs, but you can rest assured that the English Language Institute is well-equipped to assist you with your transition. Our instructors and staffmembers are trained to direct you to relevant support, and provide advice and assistance.We’re proud to have a “small” advantage over other, larger schools because our classes aren’t over-crowded! Instead, you’ll receive personalized attention from our faculty, staff, and administrators. And while all this makesit easier to learn at a rigorous pace, there is help available if you find that you’re falling behind or miss a class. With tutoring available at no additional cost, we can match you with a tutor any time you think you may need a little extra help.

American National University welcomes applications for

admission from international applicants across the globe.

Throughout the years it has been our honor to welcome

English as a Second Language (ESL), undergraduate and

Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from

as many as 100 countries.

Our staff members help these students with their initial

adjustment to the University and surrounding area and

assist them throughout their entire stay by providing social

and cultural activities, and by answering questions and

giving advice about personal concerns, cultural differences,

immigration regulations, and financial matters.
