Adams CountyDESTINATIONSCross-country skiing trailsThe Van Kuren Trail in Monroe Center, Lake Arrowhead in the Town of Rome and Roche-A-Cri State Park north of friendshipfeature groomed and marked cross-country ski trails. Lake Arrowhead’s trails follow the Pines Golf Course for a unique view ofthe links. Both Castle Rock County Park on Highway Z in Quincy and Petenwell County Park on Bighorn Drive in Monroe Centerfeature ungroomed trails. Petenwell has fifteen miles of trails and Van Kuren has almost three.

Snowmobile trailsAdams County boasts more than 230 miles of state-funded/county-sponsored snowmobile trails that are maintained by localsnowmobile clubs. Many of the trails afford views of places difficult to reach or inaccessible during the rest of the year. Detailedtrail maps are available on Wisconsinoutdoorfun.com and through the Adams County Parks and Recreation Department, theAdams County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and at many businesses. Necedah National Wildlife RefugeThe Refuge features sedge meadow, savanna, prairie, and pine-oak forest habitats. The Refugeis home to dragonflies, whooping cranes, trumpeter swans, wolves, Karner blue butterflies,

badgers, and red-headed woodpeckers. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge hasone of the largest savanna restorations taking place in Wisconsin. These effortshave provided habitat for more than 110 species of migratory birds, three spe-cies of amphibians, 14 types of reptiles, and more than 44 species of butterflies.

Ashland CountyDESTINATIONNorthern Great Lakes VisitorCenterOpen daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., theCenter is located on the northernedge of the Chequamegon-NicoletNational Forest. Before the snow flies,visitors can immerse yourself in thebeauty of the northwoods wetlandson the ¾-mile boardwalk trail thatwinds along a black ash swamp, sedgemeadow, and mature cedar and tama-rack swamp. Jan. 12: Sleigh and Cutter Parade. The exhibi-tion begins at 1 p.m., and will be held

Feb. 16: Book Across theBay, from Ashland

to Washburn on Lake Superior. Thisevent is the upper midwest’s mostunique winter event, open to skiersand snowshoers of all ages and abilitylevels. The 10-kilometer course, whichis groomed for both classic-styleand skate skiing, starts in Ashlandand ends in Washburn, and followsa route, not on land, but over thefrozen surface of Lake Superior, theworld’s largest lake. The event is heldat night?, and the course is lit by thestars above and up to 1,000 candlesin ice luminaries that line the entireroute. Clark CountyDESTINATIONSHatfield/Lake ArbutusLake Arbutus cradles both Clark andJackson Counties in west central Wiscon-sin. The 840-acre lake was formed in theearly 1900’s for the purpose of generatinghydro-electric power. Anglers can enjoyboth lake and river fishing in Hatfield.The lake and the Black River produce walleye, northern pike, channel catfish, muskie, crappie,and large-and-smallmouth bass. Hatfield is in the heart of both Clark and Jackson Counties,offering a combined total of 320,000 acres of public hunting land, and over 235 miles of ATVand snowmobile trails. Take a short drive over to Bruce Mound, or Levis Mound, for downhillskiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing.

Clark County ForestThe Clark County forest was established in 1934, and currently covers nearly 133,000 acres.This large forest provides an abundance of recreational opportunities. There are over 135miles of county forest trails designated for snow shoeing, snowmobiling, ATV’s, cross-countryskiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Additionally, numerous roads andtrails throughout the forest provide access for hunting and trapping, camping, scenic driving,wildlife observation, berry picking, and fishing.

Bruce MoundWinter Sports AreaBruce Mound Winter Sports Area, in Clark County, was established in 1948 by the Half MoonSki Club. Clark County has operated Bruce Mound, which has enhanced winter recreation forany age group, since 1960. The slopes are lighted for night adventures. Snow making andgrooming capabilities make every day like a fresh snowfall. Recent chairlift installation andnew chalet construction enhance the area. Bruce Mound is located 12 miles north of BlackRiver Falls on Highway 12-27 to Merrillan, then three miles east on Highway 95 to BruceMound Avenue, or 15 miles south of Neillsville on Highway 95 to Bruce Mound Avenue.

Levis/Trow Mound Recreational AreaClark County is proud to offer one of the finest non-motorized trail systems in Wisconsin.The Levis/Trow Mound Recreational Area is located within the southwest corner of ClarkCounty, and provides more than 34 miles of trails that wind through the county forest forhiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and showshoeing. The Levis/Trow MoundRecreational Area, Clark County’s premier cross-country ski trail system, consists of 15 milesof expertly groomed trails for skating and classic technique along with an additional 19 milesof ungroomed back-country routes. Back-country skiers can climb the narrow and difficultsingle track to the tops of the mounds for a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.Ski trails are generally open the first part of December through the end of March of eachyear, depending on snow depth. Trails are closed during the deer hunting season. Winter useof the trail provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing and tracking. Deer, fox,coyote, and even a rare wolf can be seen here. Facilities include a large parking lot, warmingshelter, running water, and heated bathrooms.

Iron CountyDESTINATIONSMECCA TrailsThe MECCA Cross-Country Ski Trails are located in thetown of Mercer. There are approximately 18 km oftrails groomed for classic and/or skate skiing. Trails aregroomed by volunteers, as conditions allow. Hiking,snowshoeing, and dogs are allowed only on the un-tracked portions of the trails. The trails are also open forhiking and mountain biking in the spring, summer, andautumn. The daily trail-use donation suggestions are $8per adult, $5 per child, $1 per dog, or $20 for howevermany people you have in your car.

Schomberg Park Snowshoe TrailThe trail is made up of two loops, each one about .85miles long (totaling 1.7 miles). This trail features easyterrain and is marked.

Whitecap MountainsJust west of Hurley, this skiing complex features 43 runsof a variety of skill levels, from expert to beginner.

Snowmobile TrailsIron County offers over 500 miles of groomed trails,and 175,000 acres of off-trail boondocking. As the snowcapital of Wisconsin, the average annual snowfall oftenexceeds 200 inches, giving Iron County the most reliablesnow in the Midwest. Ice fishingIron County has 154 uncrowded lakes with public access and 136 miles of trout streams. The county’s variety of lakes gives anglers opportunities for everything from panfish to walleye and musky.Ice fishing is also a popular sport during the winter months.

LangladeCounty

Gartzke Flowage Hiking, Cross-Country Ski,and Snowshoe TrailsThis trail is approximately 6.5 miles long with various loops.Snowshoe trails are also available. These trails are very scenic,and traverse through a Norway Pine Plantation, uplandhardwood and cedar swamps along the Gartzke Flowage.Parking area, restrooms, warmingshelter with firewood and tables.From Antigo, travel east on HighwayF. Once past the Highway S intersec-tion, continue east on Fifth AvenueRoad for two more miles.

Veteran’s Memorial ParkVeteran’s Memorial Park, N8375 Park Road, Deerbrook, is along beautiful Jack Lake. Jack Lake isa pristine, crystal-clear, spring-fed lake surrounded by hundreds of acres of county-owned forests,rich with recreational opportunities and wildlife. The park and campground are situated on thelake’s west and south shore, nestled among mature maple, birch, oak, and pine trees, providinga relaxing and peaceful setting. It is home to many activities, including hiking/biking, disk golf,cross-country ski trail, a trail head for snowmobiling with access to over 500 miles of groomedtrails, and more. This park is 15 miles north of Antigo, right off Highway 45.

Ice Age TrailDust off your hiking boots and head to Langlade County. Boast-ing 50 miles of the thousand-mile Ice Age Trail you can get a tastefor the Trail on any of five segments that run through the county.

Kettlebowl Ski HillKettlebowl Ski Hill is a volunteer-run, com-munity ski hill. It has several rope tows, andgreat skiing for little kids to young teens,and even older folks. The vertical drop isonly about 200 feet and is not too crowded,so you can ski all day. It’s a short ride outfrom Antigo. There are indoor bathroomsin a nice new chalet, lots of good food andhot dog variety, and lots of great familieshanging out and enjoying winter. Kettle-bowl also includes 4.3 miles of groomedcross-country ski trails, and is part of the13-mile Ice Age Hiking Trail. From Antigo,travel north on Highway 45 to Highway I.Then, go east on Highway I to Highway 52for approximately eight miles.

Nicolet Roche Mountain BikeTrailThe challenging Nicolet Roche MountainBike Trail, located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, is a single-track trail

that incorporates natural features sure tokeep the excitement level up. This trail is 14miles long, with 13 miles of single-track, andis located on the south end at Boulder LakeCampground and Boat Landing, 1.8 milesnortheast of Highway 55 via Highway WWand Forest Road 2116. On the north end onHighway 64, 3.3 miles east of Langlade.

Springbrook TrailThe city of Antigo has a new walking/bikingtrail. The two-plus-mile, 10-foot-wide trailis a combination of asphalt, boardwalk, andwood-chip paths along Antigo Lake andSpring Brook before meandering throughforests. A portion of the Springbrook Trail isalso groomed in the winter for cross-countryskiing, and you can even explore off the trailwith your snowshoes. The trailhead is onFourth Avenue in Antigo, east of Highway45. You can also access the trail off VirginiaStreet, north of Highway 64/Fifth Avenue, orpark at North Elementary School.

Moccasin Lake TrailAt 5.5 miles long, the Moccasin Lake Trail is used both for hiking, cross-country skiing, andhorseback riding. Located west of Elcho, this area features a variety of rolling terrain, and ishighlighted by two river basins. Facilities include a parking area, restrooms, warming shelter withfirewood and tables. From Antigo, travel north on Highway 45 for approximately 18 miles. Next,turn left onto Enterprise Lake Road. Then, go west on Moccasin Lake Road to Bear Road. Finally,go south on Bear Road for one mile to the trail head.
