ESAM WILL CELEBRATE THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GENERAL ELECTRIC FLIGHT TEST CENTER

Come and Join us at ESAM on August 5th thru 7th, 2016 as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the GE

Flight Test Center. The GE Flight Test Center was where history was made 70 years ago and is now the Empire State Aerosciences Museum. In 1946 the General Electric Company (GE) constructed a hanger at the Schenectady County Airport to assist the United States in developing rocket technology and jet en-gines. Following World War II, the German scientist Werner Von Braun was brought to this area by GE to direct the production of rockets for space exploration and flight. GE was the first major industrial company to build rockets in the USA and in the 1950’s the Center was used to test jet engines and other armaments for military aircraft. In conjunction, GE constructed a test site in Malta, NY. ESAM has been fortunate to obtain many arti-facts from that site and has built a replica of that site to give a “hands-on” experience for all visitors.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN Dear Friends of ESAM, The museum’s hangar turns 70 this year! The hangar and building complex that ESAM calls home, was built 70 years ago by General Electric. As World War II ended, jet engine development became a high priority. General Electric built their GE Flight Test Center at the Schenectady Airport to test their jet engine pro-gram. Some of the country’s earliest jet engines were tested here in Glenville. To recognize the hangar as a historical landmark in Glenville, the museum will be putting on a 70th Anni-versary event this summer from August 5th – 7th. Peter Russo is the committee chair for the event, and is doing a fantastic job lining up acts and activities for an excit-ing weekend. The committee is also working on bring-ing in flying historic aircraft and active military aircraft for the event. Watch for details and announcements. If you would like to volunteer to help with the event, please e-mail ([email protected]) or call our office (518) 377-2191, exten-sion 10. Another exciting development that has not been made public yet is that ESAM has been selected as a destination for the FireBall Run, a 26 episode adventure travel series following the journey of 40 driving teams as they explore America’s side roads in search of “rare, epic and historic artifacts.” Over the winter, the pro-gram’s producers visited the museum and were impressed and excited by what they saw. This opportunity would not have been possible without the help of Pe-ter Bardunias, President of the Southern Saratoga Chamber and Kevin Milling-ton, VP of ESAM. Preparations are under way for the museum to host this high profile event. The FireBall Run drivers should be arriving in the Fall of 2016. More updates to come.

If you have not noticed, our volunteers have been very busy renovating the gift shop and hangar wall. The museum entrance and gift shop have been gutted and a whole new gift shop upgrade is under way. The new design, by John Kolwaite, is more aviation related and modern. Helping John are Ray Legere, Bud Mat-thews, Joyce Newkirk, Don Morrett and employees of Legere Restorations who have donated their expertise and time.

Gary Gershon is leading a team of volunteers in covering the outside wall of Gallery I. The wall covering will be facing the hangar and give the space much needed improvement. Gary is also adding insulation to the wall which is impor-tant. A big thanks goes to Lowe’s for donating materials and great discounts (negotiated by Gary). Jim Liguori President

(continued from page 1) Join us on Friday, August 5th as we begin the celebration with officials from General Electric, the County, Congress and local politicians to announce the weekend celebration. A number of our invited guests are celebrities who are active enthusiasts of flying. On display will be World War II bombers, such as the B-25 and B-17, and fighters such as the P-51, as well as other aircraft. Food will be avail-able. In the evening the movie “Planes”, a Disney animated picture will be shown in the Hangar. On Saturday, August 6th we’ll be offering flights in the World War II aircraft as well as tours of the museum. In addition, on this exciting day we will offer aerial demonstrations by para-sailers and sky divers, heli-copter rides, hot air balloon rides and more. We’ll climax the evening with a Hangar Dance, live band and singers. The option to the dance will be the movie “Tora, Tora, Tora” which will be shown out-doors-indoors in the big hangar. On display in Gallery II visitors will find a replica of the Japanese air-craft carrier Akagi which was highlighted in the movie. Sunday, August 7th will be a Family Day for which children are encouraged to “invite” their parents. Flights will again be offered and tours of the museum will be available. Other events are being considered and will be announced as things firm up. Supporters of this event include Schenectady County Manger Kathleen Rooney, Schenectady County Special Events Director Jason Lecuyer, Schenectady County Tourism and Convention Manager Talia Cass, Town of Glenville Supervisor Chris Koetzle, 109th Air National Guard LtCol Dave Panzera and Richmor Aviation FBO Manager Dave Buono. ESAM ARTIFACTS RECEIVE HIGH VISIBILITY AT ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ART EXHIBIT

In the last issue of Aeronotes we noted that ESAM’s JATO (Jet Assisted Takeoff) canister and a photo of an L-C130 using JATO to take off from the snow were accepted into the Albany Institute of His-tory and Art’s The Capitol Region in 50 Objects exhibit. We’re please to report that the ESAM ob-jects have received high visibility in the exhibit. On February 17th ESAM Trustee Kevin Millington described ESAM’s objects to Congressman Paul Tonko who was touring the exhibit (see photo below). Following the tour, the Congressman convened a roundtable with representatives of area museums to discuss museum trends and needs. On March 13th Kevin teamed up with ESAM Trustee John Panoski to participate in the Institute's 50 Objects Gallery Talk. During the event, Kevin and John used their expertise to provide a 15 minute discussion of ESAM’s objects to a guided tour of the exhibit. Word is that their presentation elicited the most applause from the attendees. Although the exhibit ended on April 3rd, after which ESAM’s objects were returned to our museum, the Albany Institute is planning to continue an on-line presence and is exploring the possibility of publish-ing a book about the exhibit. ESAM would like to thank Dr. Todd Valentic for allowing us to use his LC-130 photograph, Sgt William Gizara, NYANG for arranging the needed authorizations and ESAM volunteer Bob Vore for serving as a liaison among the interested parties.

LETTERS LIKE THESE WE LIKE TO SEND AND RECEIVE

March 3, 2016 Lawrence McArthur Secretary, Curatorial & Acquisitions Committee Empire State Aerosciences Museum Dear Sir: I personally apologize that the enclosed deed of gift was not promptly returned to you. We appreciate Michael Collins part in getting these to the Museum and for your part in preparing the deed of gift. Thank you for including a copy for our records and know that we are happy to have the books in the right place for however you may chose to inspire aviation enthusiasm. Sincerely yours, Eleanor M. Hill (Editor’s Note; ESAM volunteer Michael Collins facilitated the Hill family’s donation of 58 books to the ESAM Research Center and Library. The collection includes books about well-known aviation names such as John Glenn, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Chuck Yager, Burt Rutan, Amelia Earhart, Eddie Rickenbacker, Lawrence Sperry, Charles Lindbergh, Richard Bird and others.)

November 8, 2015 Dear Kevin, I thank you so much for once again making it a special day for the students from Frederick Douglas Academy. I really appreciate it so very much. Thank you, Ronnie

Dear Mr. Millington, Thank you for the really cool tour of the airplanes! Thanks too for the calendar and model airplanes. Please accept this donation with our gratitude and we will see you at the next breakfast. Your friend, Wyatt

Hello Ms. Muir,

On behalf of ESAM and our Research Center Team under the direction of Maury York, we wanted to thank you for sending us a copy of your book Canadian Women in the Sky. It was such a nice surprise.

I have to admit, I not-so-subtly intercepted the book when it arrived and started reading it! I was look-ing forward to it and enjoyed it. It is an excellent proof of how success and progress in any field is in-deed built upon the efforts of courageous and determined pioneers especially when non-traditional par-ticipants are not welcomed.

Good luck with the book and, again, thanks for remembering us. Happy Holidays!

PULITZER PRIZE NOMINEE APPEARS AT ESAM Last summer, local author Raymond O’Connor appeared at ESAM to talk about his book She Called Him Ray-mond. The book has since been nomi-nated for a Pulitzer Prize. She Called Him Raymond, Mr. O’Con-ner’s first book, is about the romance be-tween his mother and her first husband. Mr. O’Conner wrote the book after his then elderly mother showed him an old letter. The letter was the last letter she had received from her first husband before he died in the crash of his B-17 in World War II. She subsequently remarried and had a second family that included the author. Spoiler Alert: Seeing the letter was the first time that Mr. O’Conner learned that he was named after the first husband. That knowledge set him off on a voyage of dis-covery about his mother’s early life. Dur-ing this voyage he was able learn about his mother’s upbringing, to locate and access his namesake’s diary of their courtship and to view her first husband’s original World War II handwritten flight records. The book tells a fascinating story of young love and duty during World War II.

FIREBALL RUN IS COMING TO

ESAM The Fireball Run Adventure Rally will make a stop at ESAM later this year. The adventure rally features 40 two-person teams driving 2,000 miles in eight days. The trivia-seeking rally starts in western New York State, comes to the Capital District Area, and then pro-ceeds to other locations in the northeastern part of the USA. It is viewed as an on-line streaming series in the United States and is televised on traditional networks elsewhere in the world. The teams drive unusual and vintage vehicles, and are provided clues that help them reveal a location to which the team must travel in order to accomplish a mission or engage in an activity. The expectation is that two of ESAM’s exhibits will factor into the rally and that selected ESAM members with interact with the con-testants.

HOLD THE DATES: ESAM’S SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH

Yes - Summer Programs is plural! ESAM is planning to run two concurrent summer programs for youth this summer. One will be a STEM program that will teach boys and girls ages 13-16 about several aspects of aviation. The program will run from 8:30 AM - 12:00 noon each day from Monday, 8/22 - Friday, 8/26. The pro-gram will include hands-on classes where students prepare flight plans alongside mentors - including flight route, enroute and terminal navigation, departure and approach, communications, weather and FAA rules; learn about the forces of flight - how planes fly; enjoy presentations from guest speakers, including current and former aviators; tour the museum's incredible exhibits and outdoor airpark, and sit in some of the museum's historic jet fighters and helicopters. In addition, students will have the oppor-tunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association to become Junior EAA member, which includes a 1/2 hour flight! The second program is for younger children ages 8 - 12, also from 8/22 - 8/26 from 8:30 AM - 12:00 noon. Students will enjoy hands-on classes about the history of aviation and aircraft design; the forces of flight; use a flight control simulator; make and launch stick rockets; and, like the concurrent program, tour the museum's incredible exhibits and outdoor airpark and sit in some of the museum's jet fighters and helicopters. Students will likewise have the opportunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association to become Junior EAA member, which includes a 1/2 hour flight! The programs are being coordinated by Rachael Gershon Rourke and Kevin Millington, in coopera-tion with Schenectady County Community College. Cost for these week-long programs is $150 per student (which includes the flight). A limited number of free-of-charge scholarships are also being made available. Schenectady County Community College will take charge of registration. The point of contact at SCCC is Maria C. Kotary, Associate for Workforce Development. Her phone number is 518-595-1101, extension 4.

THE ADMISSIONS/GIFT SHOP IS UNDERGOING MAJOR RENOVATION

The ESAM Admissions/Gift Shop is undergoing a major upgrade. Under the direction of ESAM Trus-tee John Kolwaite, the first room that visitors see when they enter the museum is being transformed into a beautifully inviting space. Old windows are being blocked, a new floor is being put down, new carpeting and display cases are being installed, the ceiling and walls are being painted, the entry ramp is being turned into a runway and other improvements are underway. Completion is expected this spring. Thanks to Bud Matthews, Ray Legere, Joyce Newkirk who have been painting up a storm, and to the Restoration crew that helped remove the window air conditioner.

Above left is John Kolwaite’s artist’s rendering of what the entryway should look like when the renovations are completed. Above right is ESAM Board member Bud Matthews working on the

walls of the entryway.

ESAM’S BEECHCRAFT IS IN RESTORATION The Restoration Team has been hard at work over the winter refur-bishing the museum’s Beechcraft in order to put it on display as a flight simulator for kids. Dennis Cusano and John Panoski led the Beechcraft’s move to the Restoration hangar. Once there, the Restoration crew got busy priming the fuselage, reupholstering the seats, restoring the cockpit interior, making artificial landing gear and cutting off the wings. The goal is to be able to install the museum’s flight simulator into the airplane so that kids can use it in a cockpit environment. Among the crew working on the Beechcraft are Don Morrett, Al Petroni, Peter Bergendahl, Fred Bloomstein, John Kusek, Charlie Weissand, Lou Bach and Jeffrey Smith. At the right, the now-wingless Beechcraft fuselage is ready for another coat of paint.

OUR VOLUNTEERS TANK RENOVATION

CONTINUES The Local Section of the August 25, 2015 issue of The Gazette (Schenectady’s home town newspaper) con-tained a front page color arti-cle about the renovation of ESAM’s Korean War/Vietnam War-era “Duster” tank. Restoration volunteers Ronnie Quinn, Tom Urqu-hart, Rich Bievenue and Don Morrett were quoted in the article. Also men-tioned was Dominic Carnibucci who led the restoration effort until he retired. The official name of the tank is the M42 Twin 40-mm Full Tracked Self-Propelled Gun. It was de-signed as a anti-aircraft tank. It weighs more than 24 tons. The renovation team has sandblasted, cleaned, primed and painted the tanks interior and exterior. They also removed the tank’s 500 horse-power Continental air-cooled engine to see if they could get it running. After switching from magnetos to an electronic distributor, upgrading the batteries, and servicing and cleaning the engine, Voila! They succeeded. The engine is now running as is a smaller engine that is used to save fuel when the tank is idling. Next on the agenda is to prepare all of the connections between the engine and the chassis so that the engine can be placed back into the tank’s frame.

Mike was active in the Research Center at ESAM. He was predeceased by his wife. Our condolences go out to his sons and their families.

ESAM UPGRADES ITS COMMUNICATIONS CONNECTIVITY

Under the leadership of ESAM President Jim Liguori, the museum has upgraded it communications connectivity. Over the winter the museum cut-over from EarthLink to Verizon for its Internet and telephone services. As a result of the cutover, Internet data is now being processed three times faster than before at a lower cost and in the process an unused telephone line was eliminated.

ESAM TRIP TO NEW ENGLAND AIR MUSEUM Last May, twenty-seven ESAM members and guests took a bus trip to the New England Air Museum at Bradley Airport in Connecticut. In addition to touring the exhibits, the group received a tour of the museum’s restoration shop where they are restoring a P-51D with hopes of getting it flying. Thanks to Gary Gershon for leading the arrangements for this tour.

ISAAC COLE NAGY ESAM is pleased to help welcome Isaac Cole Nagy into the world. Isaac was born on march 16, 2016 to parents Joshua Nagy and Aine Leader-Nagy. Mom, dad and baby are doing well. Josh is a volunteer with ESAM’s IT group and a member of the museum’s oral history team.

ZONTA CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL AMELIA EARHART LUNCHEON AT ESAM

The Zonta Club of Schenectady held its annual Amelia Earhart Lunch-eon at ESAM on January 23rd. More than 50 women from local Zonta clubs (and a smattering of men) attended. The keynote speaker was Colonel Maryann Moriarty, NYANG (retired). Also participating by speaker phone was Richard Gillespie who has spent years trying to resolve the cir-cumstances of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance in the Pacific during her at-tempt to fly around the world.

ESAM TO HOST THE 2016 THIERS MEMORIAL FLY-IN PLANE AND

CAR SHOW The annual Thiers Memorial Fly-In which has been held at the Schenectady County Airport in recent years will this year be held right at ESAM. The Fly-In is scheduled for April 30th from 10 am to 3 pm. Entry is free. As the flyer to the left indicates, helicop-ter rides, static displays with open cock-pits and a C-130 Hercules will be avail-able in addition to the car show. The event is organized by the Rensse-laer Polytechnic Institute Flying Club in honor of Lawrence H. R. Thiers, RPI Class of 1996 who served as a men-tor and as President of the club. Tragi-cally, Lawrence passed away the day before his graduation in May 1999. In his memory, an endowment fund was created to provide financial assistance for students of the club to achieve what was Lawrence’s greatest passion, the art of flying.
