Due to the unique “underhood” capa- bilities of the ES400 modules (the ES400 modules have an IP67 environ- mental protection rating), this also meant that even engine hardware, components, or subsystem updates and changeovers could be handled very quickly and efficiently. That’s because the instrumentation can be located in the best physical packaging location without having to consider how to protect the instrumentation from damage during use. These fre- quent changeovers can now be ac- complished in only one week, where in the past it would have taken several weeks. 12 RT 2.2008 F or a company whose primary business is the design, develop- ment, and production of light, me- dium, and heavy duty diesel engines, the availability of test and develop- ment vehicles at Navistar is limited. Most test and development vehicles are actively being used for testing pur- poses. To further complicate the issue of their high utilization, these test ve- hicles are also required to be shared across many different groups, each of which requires different types of tests that must be executed. These different types of tests include emissions, per- formance, Noise Vibration and Harsh- ness (NVH), durability, and full DVP&R (Design Validation Plan and Report) testing. Additionally, because of the immense pressure in the industry to bring new, high quality products to market as quickly as possible, test vehicles must also be updated quite often with new engines and components/subsystems and with all of the corresponding in- strumentation required for each type of test needed to be run. To make the most efficient use of not only the test vehicle, but also the test engineer's time, it is important that these engine and/or component/subsystem change- overs occur as quickly as possible. Sales of light duty diesel engines for use in North American vehicles are an important part of its business. To support this business, a large amount of effort and focus is placed on in-vehicle develop- ment and testing. Navistar found the ES400 compact measurement modules from ETAS to be a good fit for its needs. In the past, the only option available to test engineers was to “tear down” the vehicle after testing was completed, and install a different set of instru- mentation to support the next set of vehicle tests. Of course, this whole process was very time consuming and needed to be performed many, many times during development. This whole cycle, while necessary, did not provide value to the engine development process. Navistar was quick to recognize the benefits that ETAS’ ES400 compact module series could provide. The biggest benefit is that the ES400 modules could quickly and easily be installed in a vehicle only once in such a way that all engine and vehicle measurement signals could be cap- tured for all required vehicle testing. This meant that the vehicle instrumen- tation could be shared across multiple groups and multiple tests and that the vehicle only had to be instrumented one time. Mounting details: Five ES420 Thermo Modules and four ES411 A/D Modules fit right next to the engine compartment inside the fender well, allowing Navistar to measure 32 temperature and 16 pressure signals and run only one cable through the firewall to connect it to the ES600 Network Module. Navistar’s DuraStar medium-duty utility truck. The other challenge that Navistar had in the past was space. Due to the physical packaging constraints of trying to fit a light duty diesel engine into the engine compartment of a light or medium duty passenger truck, there is not much (if any) additional space in either the engine compartment, or even the vehicle itself, for instrumen- tation. Because of this space limitation, ETAS’ ES400 daisy chain topology provides many benefits such as greatly sim- plified, efficient, and robust vehicle instrumentation installations. First, the ES400 modules require only a single small Ethernet cable to be passed into the vehicle’s passenger compartment. With other types of in- strumentation, additional holes must be drilled in the test vehicle to allow for instrumentation wiring to pass into the vehicle’s passenger compart- ment. Secondly, the ES400 eliminates the further cost and hassle of additional signal conditioning hardware. Since the ES400 modules can be mounted close to the signal source, this also greatly reduces electrical signal noise. Navistar also discovered that it could leverage its capital instrumentation purchases due to the compatibility of the ES400s with all of Navistar’s exist- ing ETAS measurement and calibration hardware and software. Navistar was able to reuse its existing ECU interface devices as well as its other ES600 measurement devices. In fact, Navistar reused its ES650 module to measure both turbo speed and fuel tempera- ture. Navistar has been impressed with the level of productivity improvements it has been able to realize as a result of incorporating ETAS’ ES400 modules into its test and evaluation vehicles. The ES400 modules are a valuable addition to the ETAS portfolio of measurement and calibration prod- ucts.
