A Tribute to our Late Father Pake Walker Pake Walker was a skipper and a seaman, a fisherman all his life who navigated around the rocks and breakers off the Mayo coastline and knew them all by name. He was one of the best known and most highly respected fishermen in the western coast of Ireland. When looking west of the Erris coast as the sun disappears over the horizon and into the depths of the
Atlantic Ocean, we remember him today and every day as he continues on his journey with his wife Sally by his side. As he steers his vessel towards the land of eternal peace and life everlasting. Today and every day we think of our father and mother, they will all be sadly missed always by sons, daughters, sons in law and daughters in law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
ERRIS ATHLETIC CLUB / CLUB LÚTHCHLEASAÍOCHTA IORRAIS Due to many general public requests for the establishment of an athletic club, and following public advertisement, a group was formed in November 2015 for the purpose of developing an athletic club for the Erris area. Erris Athletic Club/Club Lúthchleasaíochta Iorrais was founded and will register with Athletics Ireland (national governing body for athletics). Athletics Ireland has a mission to support and develop the athletes of Ireland of all ages, disciplines and abilities. Erris Athletic Club will hold its registration on Thursday (21st Jan) from 7pm to 9pm at Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. Individual fee is 30 euro and family fee is 80 euro. Anyone registering is requested to provide a copy of their birth cert. After registration, a schedule of training will be formalised and we will be then be up and running (literally)!! 2016 message from Baile Slachtmhar A historic year ahead of us ? in more ways than one! The celebrations or commemorations for 2016 are sometimes controversial but there is one thing that we can all agree on ? the need to make our town and our area a better place for everyone ? to live in, to work in, to visit, to enjoy its great outdoors on land or on sea and to savour our history, heritage, legends and culture. What a transformation the Tidy Towns competition has made in
this country in the last 50 years! Every single thing we do no matter how small or insignificant it seems, impacts on the progress of our area. Every single food wrapper, cigarette butt or dog poop that appears on our streets instead of in a bin has a negative impact. To our great credit there is a huge reduction in paper litter in our town but cigarette butts and dog poop are still a major problem. The State of the R312 Castlebar to Bellacorrick RoadThere was a public meeting held in Keenagh Community Centre on Monday December 7th last re: State of the R312 Bellacorrick to Castlebar Road. Road users along the R312 Bellacorrick to Castlebar have had a long running campaign to try to get the road upgraded. It?s described as the worst regional road in the county.Sections of the road have been closed to traff ic recently due to f looding; this results in diversions and from Erris adding an additional 25 minutes to journey to Castlebar.If you are interested in this matter could you please make contact with Brendan Lavelle the Chairman of Keenagh Community Development and spokesperson for the R132 Road [email protected] or 087 6233928

John Conmy, Chef and Proprietor of Fun Bobby's Bistro, Belmullet has put Erris in the headlines being chosen as a Leader in the popular RTE television programme Operation Transformation. John is doing really well with the weight loss and exercise programmes and has had great support in the first 5k OT walk with up to 1,000 people walking with him on Saturday 9th January.

We are now waiting for all the coordinates to be verif ied. Once this is done Ambulance control will have contact with the group in the area. My HeroMy grandmother is now eighty eight years of age and resides in a nursing home in Belmullet, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer?s a few years ago. Over the years she has failed both physically and mentally, her thoughts becoming more muddled and unstructured. Sadly she is now only a mere ghost of the woman she used to be. Yet, to this day my memories of her in her better years ensure that she remains someone whom I admire a great deal.More than anything else I have treasured the stories she has told me of her past, her family, her home town and her married years. Ever since I was old enough to ask, she has answered me patiently even when I would ask for my ?favourites? over and over again. Her stories I now know as well as my own.What I admire the most about Eileen Gallagher is the way she faced each hardship that life gave her; when her father was killed in a road accident when she was at the tender age of ten (leaving her the oldest daughter in a family of eight children), a year later when her oldest brother Johnny died in hospital aged twelve, the following years brought more tragedy as Eileen lost her brothers Mickey and Paddy. Still she remains adamant that her childhood years were golden. She has shown herself to have the kind of strength and bravery that you see only in books with amazing characters. She grew up in a small village in Swinford, they had a small farm and she worked hard alongside her mother and siblings. She did not excel in school, but she did work hard no matter how much she disliked the schoolmaster. If you ask her what her family life was like, she will most likely answer as she has always answered me ?we had bad times and good times, but we were happy?. When she was still quite young she went to work in England, working herself to the bone so she could always send money home to her mother and grandmother at home. It was there, in England where she met her husband, my grandfather. It was also in England where she postponed plans of marriage, choosing instead to nurse her ailing grandmother and dying mother.Finally she made it back to my grandfather; it was in Rossport that she says her happiest years were, there with her husband and three children.I don?t know what type of person my grandmother was as a child, or if she really was a strict a parent as my father says she was. I only have the stories she told me and my own memories of a caring, mischievous and loving grandmother. I am by no means blinded by love; she had and still does have faults as much as any other person, for example like many people of her generation she?s ever so slightly racist. She has no clue what the Internet is and seems to think that Mid-West Radio is brilliantly modern. I know that she?s kind to animals and that she used to love gardening. She taught me how to play cards and we would spend the weekends watching westerns and reading the Ireland?s Own while munching on Werther?s Originals.When I was young and she would be looking after me, she would tell me stories to entertain me. Now it?s the other way around, it?s me entertaining her with the stories she has forgotten. Even with all that, it?s the little things she does or says that makes her such a wonderful person, like how she always has a little riddle or saying to tell me each day ? a little of what you fancy does you good?.To me, my grandmother is one of the most awe-inspiring people I have been lucky enough to meet.By Eimear Gallagher. Bangor Area Reunion is happening from 29th July till 5th August 2016 inclusive. A full programme of events will be available soon. We are still getting loads of ideas from different people about activities they would love to see on the programme.. Meanwhile the fundraising has continued.A very sucessful "fun football" and the rodeo bull were the latest very successful and very well supported events! Mrs. Browns boys won the football match.They put up a great battle against D'unbelievables and indeed parts of the match were unbelievable! On St.Stephen's night in the 'Talk of the Town' Declan King became 'king of the bull'. Edel Sweeney was crowned 'queen of the bull'. Thanks to all who supported our fundraising in 2015. Bangor Hibs and Bangor Reunion are currently running a 'last man standing 'competition. You can enter by buying a team for ?10 from either committee.. You have 2 weeks now left to be in with a chance to enter. A reunion book and a cd full of photos is being compiled at present. Old photos and slides are being sought. If you want to write a little piece for the book, please get in touch..All correspondence can be sent to [email protected] join the Bangor area reunion facebook page for updates or send your letters, stories, pictures to Bangor Erris post office. We have already received some beautiful old photos and some lovely written pieces from all over the globe. The support for the reunion is very heartening. Pieta House West would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Doherty family and friends for hosting a number of fundraising events during 2015. "Remembering Brendan" raised ?20050.00 and we are pleased to say that all of these funds will be
used in Pieta House West service. Pieta House is Ireland?s first community based centre for the intervention and prevention of self-harm and suicide. CPSOS stands for the Centre for the Prevention of Suicide or Self-harm.Registered charity number: CHY16913Pieta House West is located on Bishop Street in Tuam and provides one to one professional and therapeutic support to individuals across the western region who are struggling with thoughts of suicide or engaging in self-harm. Furthermore clients can self-refer into the service directly or via a family member, meaning a GP or Psychiatric referral is not required. This specialized counselling service in addition to support for family members is provided Completely Free of Charge.Spearheaded by John Concannon (The Secret Millionaire) and the committees of Galway, Mayo & Roscommon Pieta House West opened its doors in December 2013 and is now just over 2 years in operation. To date we have supported upwards of 600 men, women and children from Galway city & county as well as across the Western Region. Our client base is currently made up of 44% male and 56% female clients to whom we provide up to 15 sessions of professional one to one therapeutic support as well as support for family members of the client also. The age profile of our clients ranges from 10 to 80 and so far our team of professional therapists have delivered in excess of 6,000 counselling hours. Nearly 40% of our clients in the past 12 months represented the 18-34 age group, followed by the 35-54 age group at 30% and the majority of our referrals are through family or friends.Approximately 15% of our annual income comes from statutory grants. It will cost in the region of ?6 million to run the charity throughout the country in 2016. 85% of this needs to be achieved through Pieta Fundraising events such as Darkness into Light, The Pieta 100 cycle as well as donations & fundraisers by the members of the public, to which we are hugely indebted.

January got off to a great start with everyone all set to lose all those pounds that had been gained during christmas! Erris was out in full force especially with all the media attention surrounding Operation Transformation and our local leader John Conmy. Belmullet Unislim class wish John the very best of luck and we are all behind him.2015 was a great year in class with lots of success! Two of our members were in Dublin for fotoshoot for the unislim mag having lost 12st between them. Andrew lost 5st and his wife Amanda 7st since Jan last year. Amazing results as a result of wanting to lose the weight and get healthy!If you're thinking of losing Weight and you want to get healthy then don't put it off any longer. Join your local class. You won't regret it! Our Belmullet class last year shed a total of 884st.

Low Cal Spray Oil240g Wholemeal Pasta450g Lean Beef1 Onion, choppedMushrooms, sliced3 tbsp Green Onions, thinly sliced1/4 tsp PaprikaSalt and Pepper230ml Beef Stock4 tsp FlourGreen Onions, thinly sliced
Slice beef into strips, and heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Spray low cal spray oil and sauté the beef for four minutes, or until browned.Remove the beef, and sauté the onion, pepper, salt, paprika and mushrooms to the pan for four minutes. Reduce heat to medium.Whisk 60ml of beef stock and flour in a small bowl. Add the stock mixture, beef, remaining stock, and 120ml water in a pan.
Cover and cook for 8 minutes.Boil the noodles as per packet instructions, and serve with the beef mixture.

The members of the Defence Forces gave an informative talk to the children, and all present of the history of the Flag and the proclamation. Schools are asked to display their Flag prominently on Proclamation Day on the 15th of March 2016. Those of us over the age of 55, our older friends and family, co-workers and neighbours?, have as much a right as anyone else to impact on how we think about the world around us, the decisions we make about our collective future and the communities we live in. Caoilfhinn, lands lead role in New TV Series ?Nuala? Fiona Bourke School of Speech & Drama student Caoilfhinn Geoghegan will play the lead role in a new TV Series ? Nuala?. Filming started at the weekend in Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. The drama is set in the West of Ireland and revolves around a family with three young daughters. The story is told through the eyes of the youngest daughter Nuala.Cinetex, the independent production company who are making the pilot, held auditions for the roles and saw over 150 children over three days in Westport and Tourmakeady. The standard was incredible and the
producers then had the unenviable task of whittling it down to the final three. Seven students from the well known Fiona Bourke School were in the final fifteen. In the end, Caoilfhinn Geoghegan (6) from Castleconnor was offered the lead role. Caoilfhinn is daughter of Michelle Lavelle and Enda Geoghegan and has been a student of the Fiona Bourke School of Speech & Drama Ballina since the age of three. In addition to her new role, Caoilfhinn currently features on RTE jr for another season. Kayla Browne (10) and Ella Browne(9), who are real life sisters and will play Nuala's older sisters Roisin and Ailbhe, hail from Castlebar. The well-known Galway actress Tara Breathnach (Tina in Ros na Rún, A Nightingale Falling, The Last Days of Anne Boleyn) is playing the role of their mammy. Gluaire, four Members of Baile Slachtmhar happily travelled to Letterkenny for the presentation of the 2015 Tidy Towns Awards. And what a lovely occasion it was! There were many prizes to be presented for the western region and the MC for the evening Máire Áine Gardiner of Fáilte Ireland did a wonderful job and kept us all entertained during the prize giving process. The prizes were presented by Joe McHugh, Minister of State at the The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. We were delighted that Eva Reilly agreed to accept the awards. Eva is herself an active member of the Baile Slachtmhar committee but it was also a way of remembering our late chairman, Eva?s husband Noel, and all that he has done for Belmullet. We had a lovely evening in the Silver Tassie Hotel where we experienced a warm Donegal welcome. The following day before heading home we took a trip around Letterkenny Town which was really lovely and they are indeed worthy winners of the National Title ? Ireland?s Tidiest Town. Not a cigarette butt in sight ? we have a long way to go! We haven?t done very well against Donegal in Croke Park in recent years but we would love to wrest that Tidy Towns Title from them! BIN YOUR BUTTS!!!!

Martina Walsh with her St Bernard, Parleshan Gina (Holly) who is a Celtic Junior winner 2015. Holly is the first dog from Erris who has qualified for Crufts and will show on 12th March in Birmingham. Crufts is one of the largest dog shows in the world. Holly has won numerous shows over the past 2 years. Martina has been involved in the Erris Agricultural Show as PRO for the past 6 years, organising the dog show and has a big interest in showing over the years.

If a call isn't answered, we will have the number two people supplied by the individual and family so we can ring them to check that everything is okay if we have concerns about the person. At the moment, our Morning Call is making regular phone calls to several people living alone and some of which have mobility problems, some are just home from a hospital stay and most of them are living on their own. A function was held in Conway Three Burnt Oak in London on the 10th of October in aid of the Erris branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association. The function was organised by Seán Ruddy and family. Music on the night was provided on the night by Martin Ruddy and band. The function was extremely successful ?12000 was raised on the night. A great night was had by all who attended. The Erris branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association would like to extend a huge thank you to Seán and family for organising the event.
