ERLPhase recently took part in the Protection

Automation and Control World Conference, held

in Dublin, Ireland from June 24-27th. This

important conference aimed to open discussions

in the PAC industry, building a community of

professionals who can learn from each other,

become friends and address shared challenges of

building tomorrow's smart grid.

We were happy that our subjects of IEC61850,

vendor interoperability and PMU were popular

topics of discussion. Our team interacted with the

various participants and secured valuable leads

with relay engineers from utilities in Ireland,

France, Germany, Portugal, Australia, Kenya,

Brazil, and Dubai. These will be followed up by

the ERLMint team.

Another highlight was that René Midence,

Director of Technical Services at ERLPhase

presented his paper "Sub-Harmonic Protection

Application for Interconnections of Series

Compensated Lines and Wind Farms". This was

much appreciated.

Hyperterminal to Fix Record File

Download Failure On 2000

Series Relays

ERL has designed a document that simplifies that

task of using the Hyperterminal to temporarily fix

instances of Record File download Failure on

2000 series ERLPhase relays (TPRO 8700, L-PRO

2100, B-PRO 8700 and F-PRO 5100), using the

terminal emulator software Hyperterminal (v7.0

for Windows 7, 32 and 64 bit machines). This

gives you better control. We specially thank

software developer Hilgraeve who had put in a

lot of effort to provide this process to work

around the issue.

If Hyperterminal software is already installed on

your machine, go to its default installation

folder location:

• for 32 bit machines, located at C:\Program

Files\Hyperterminal

• for 64 bit machines, located at C:\Program

Files(x86)\Hyperterminal

Screenshots below illustrate the process for 32

bit machines.

Inside the folder, rename the “Hypertrm.dll” file;

in this example, we used the name

“Hyperterm7.dll” to identify that the dll file came

from Hyperterminal version 7.0 installation.

After changing the name, now transfer the

“Hypertrm.dll” file (included with this instruction

package). This new “Hypertrm.dll” file came

from the older version v6.3, and works well with

Windows 7 when retrieving records from our

relays. Hypertrm.dll v6.3 may be downloaded it

directly from the Hilgraeve website at:

http://store.hilgraeve.com/htpe/support/oldv

ersions/6.3/Hypertrm.dll.

After adding the dll file, close the folder and run

the program to start working on the relays.

Learn to Fix a Corrupt TESLA

Recorder Config File

When you have to handle error messages (eg.

“ IED Re tu rned Fa l se” ) when load ing

configuration files from colleagues into the

TESLA Recorder, you need not panic. This note

we have written will guide you through the

process step-by-step.

Error messages usually indicate a corrupt setting

file. Note that we recommend users avoid using

text editor software to open and make changes

to configuration files. Rather, to ensure no data is

lost while editing, we recommend using TESLA

Control Panel software to edit the configuration

file.

In the event that you do encounter errors, first

create a duplicate copy of your setting file as a

backup and then follow the instructions below.

1. Using TESLA Control Panel, import and then

open your configuration file.

2. With the file open, edit the “Comments”

portion of the configuration screen. In this

example we haveadded the word “(edited)”

only for illustration; any changes in the setting file

will activate the “Save” button located at the

lower right corner of the screen. Save the file and

TESLA Control Panel will automatically correct

the error in the configuration file. Now reload the

setting file into the recorder and error messages

should no longer appear.

To double-check the changes, users can employ

third party setting file comparator tools,

downloadable from the internet, such as Beyond

Compare (by Scooter Software) or Altap

Salamander.

Programme to Enhance

Strategic Decision Making

Making the right decision is the most important

rule for success. ERL believes in strengthening its

decision makers in this area so the company

can progress ahead making large strides. We

conducted a training programme on "Strategic

Decision Making" at our Hosur campus for

Managers and Mid-Level Decision Makers on

3rd June.

The training programme was handled by

Mr.Sriram Krishnaswamy, an accomplished

trainer with over 12 years experience in

different roles as Design Analyst, Value

Engineering Co-ordinator and the Training

Manager of the R& D Division of TVS Motors. He

completed his B.Tech from IIT Madras and M.Sc

from IISC. He currently manages his own training

company, Competence Delta which envisions

enhancing the technical competence of India.

The programme dealt with various aspects of

decision making in a simple and easy to grasp

method. The topics covered included What is a

Decision?, Why should one learn to take

decisions?, Attributes of a decision and The

decision making process.

This programme brought in a new dimension to

decision making and a scientific and foolproof

way of taking decisions. The faculty stressed that

every organisation has long term business

objectives which are cascaded down the

organisational hierarchy into several enabling

objectives. To meet the objectives, managers and

executives take several strategic decisions which

in turn influence subsequent decisions.

Good decisions come from wisdom and wisdom

comes from bad decisions. The program

presented the attributes of a strategic decision

and equipped the participant with a framework to

take good strategic decisions. The programme

was very successful. As a token of appreciation a

memento was presented to Mr.Sriram by

Mr.Parthaprathim Ghosh, Head-Switchgear

Business & Mrs.Mathuravani, Head-Quality.

develop employees into internal trainers, who

would be able to independently design and

deliver any kind of training in the future. The

key takeaways from this program were as

follows How to get rid of fears, Effective public

speaking, Impromptu (1 Minute Presentations),

Course design, Pre/during/post training

activities, Dress code and Postures, Group

presentations, 3 & 5 Minute presentations,

Factors affecting effective training process,

energizers (Fun Activities) at the end of every
