Literacy Night

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to design a curriculum night for Reading/Language Arts that is

engaging for students and parents and informs parents of the types

of activities their child participates in during the school

day.

Evidence of Need

*Parental involvement is key to student success. By offering curriculum nights, parents get the opportunity to work with their child on activities similar to those done in the classroom every school day.

*Parents get a view into what instruction looks like in their child’s Language Arts classroom.

*Provides for a home-school connection.

Strategies for Implementation (two

months prior to event)

*Meet with administration to determine date and location and for night.

*Reserve spaces needed on the calendar and order air/heat from the district.

*Two months prior to event meet with Language Arts Vertical team to determine the theme for the night and begin identifying activities to be presented.

Strategies for Implementation (one month prior to

event)

*One month prior to event, meet with Vertical team to begin organizing games, activities and read-alouds to be presented. Assign a station to each grade-level member that will attend the night. They will be responsible for gathering materials and set-up of their station the night of the event.

*Advertise for the night in weekly newsletter. This advertisement should be in the newsletter every week until the event.

Strategies for Implementation

(one week prior to event)

*Meet with Vertical team to confirm activities have been or are being prepared for the night.

*Identify grade levels that need assistance in preparing their activities and gathering materials.

*Discuss set-up for the night with custodial staff. Give head custodian a floor plan.

*Inform YMCA afterschool daycare they will need to relocate to another area for that evening.

Strategies for Implementation

(one week prior to event)

*Notify PTA to advertise Literacy Night on the marquee with the date and time.

*Send home flyer in Tuesday Newsday folders.

*Pump up event on Morning Announcement daily

*Copy Passports and homework passes.

Strategies for Implementation

(night of event)

*Meet with custodians to insure correct set-up for the night.

*Confirm YMCA afterschool daycare is in correct spot.

*Supervise set-up of stations and rooms to be used.

*Help out grade-levels as needed.

*Greet parents as night begins. Distribute Passports to students.

*Answer questions/solve problems as they arise.

*Hand-out homework passes as students leave at the end of the night.
