DATA COLLECTION

Question #1

Share your campus plan for data collection and reporting here. Specify how your campus will collect data on number and type of applied learning activities.

Since the announcement of Chancellor Nancy Zimpher’s initiative to improve applied learning activities in 2015, Erie Community College has put forth specific plans to enhance applied learning experiences for matriculated college students who attend ECC. We would also like to report on steps we have taken to introduce and support SUNY Applied Learning at our tri-campus college.

The first step taken to advertise the applied learning initiative was to distribute a tri-fold brochure (created by the SUNY/ECC liaison) to faculty and staff indicating the components of the initiative and the due dates for campus plans. Brochures were made available to all faculty and staff on Opening Day, Fall 2015 and on College Day, Spring 2016. Brochures were also placed in departmental mail boxes and sent electronically to all department chairs across all three campuses to ensure receipt of information regarding the initiative.

On Opening Day, the SUNY/ECC liaison, Internship Coordinator, and Service Learning Coordinator offered a workshop on steps faculty could take to incorporate applied learning opportunities into curriculums. Internship booklets with integral information and forms to be completed by faculty, students and business partners engaging in applied learning experiences were given to attendees. A list of Start-Up NY companies describing the various jobs that would become available in New York was presented on Power Point to emphasize the new companies who are vested in NY. A hands-on activity took place where attendees worked in groups and chose applied learning activities (derived from the SUNY “brag book”) listed on 3X5 cards and placed in envelopes. Each group was instructed to choose experiential learning that would match programs offered at ECC and share them with the entire group.

Monthly meetings discussing applied learning take place via video conference to enable all three of ECC’s campus departments to engage in conversation to improve directives, support and the advertising of applied learning campus wide. In an effort to emphasize the importance of experiential learning, applied learning activities taking place are consistently publicized on ECC Today, the college’s main online source of communication between staff and students. This has enabled the college to determine the type of applied learning activities taking place throughout our college community. The college’s Service Learning Coordinator also advertised a list of potential community service learning opportunities on ECC’s website for students and faculty to view.

The Internships and Co-Ops Guide for Planning, Implementation and Assessment created by the State University of New York University Faculty Senate will be utilized as a resource to comply with SUNY. ECC’s Mission Statement and Middle States Commission on Higher Education will also be referenced when applied learning activities are created. The

SUNY Learning Commons also offers valuable and current information that will keep us up-to-date with applied learning trends and resources.

In the Fall of 2015 and the Spring of 2016 semesters, electronic surveys were created in Baseline by the SUNY/ECC liaison in conjunction with Institutional Research and were sent to all ECC department chairs to share with their instructors. The surveys incorporated questions such as how many students and the name and number of courses in which students participate in applied learning activities, types of activities, the semester when applied learning takes place, forms of assessment used, and ways in which the college could provide additional support for faculty. The results of the surveys will be used as a starting point to establish data collection which will be shared with Institutional Research. By extrapolating information from the surveys, the college is able to determine where more support is needed to promote applied learning and to articulate the necessity of appropriate coding for SIRIS. ECC is aware of the programs/courses that incorporate clinical participation, internships, and co-ops as part of their programs. The underlying question is what coding should be implemented to label courses in the event applied learning experiences are transferrable to four-year institutions. In this scenario, the coding would have to be uniform throughout SUNY.

ECC’s Workforce Development department plans to inform our institution of Department of Labor standards to maintain current with The Fair Labor Standards Act and liability issues pertaining to students while they embark on learning experiences. They will also share statistical information with Institutional Research in regard to retention, graduation rates and student employability of students.

Currently, the CITS department at the college is determining where InternShop should be housed on our ECC website for ease of accessibility for our staff and students. The SUNY/ECC liaison for applied learning has also met with the Student Government Association to survey their ideas and ask them to question fellow students as to how to easily navigate through the college while seeking and/or fulfilling an applied learning experience. SGA members indicated that many of our students work full time and rely on public transportation. Therefore, more workplace internships might be more effective for a particular student population. Working with companies that are accessible by public transportation might also be helpful.

Question #2

What is the plan for designating activities/sections/courses programs as having or requiring applied learning activities?

Currently, ECC lists all of its programs and courses on our college website. Students are able to view specific programs to determine if there is a required applied learning component such as an internship or clinical placement. Many course descriptions also indicate if an applied learning activity is required. As more applied learning is embedded in programs, more course descriptions will include applied learning activities. Based on the surveys we have recently

Page 4: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

conducted during the past spring and fall semesters, it is estimated that nearly 70% of our programs include a form of applied learning. Many of the programs which incorporate applied learning as a component to fulfill the course/program are located in the technologies, educational, health sciences, engineering and criminal justice fields. Documentation of such activities has been ongoing at ECC at the department level. Academic Deans collect this information regularly and report it to Institutional Research.

For applied learning activities occurring outside of these programs, we propose having all faculty report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning Coordinator to keep efficient records of applied learning activities that often occur based on the needs of our students and community during any given semester.

At the present time, ECC is also working with Career Services to add additional questions to the exit interview currently required of all graduating students. Career Services will inquire if students participated in an applied learning experience while attending ECC and what the nature of the experience involved. Career Services would also like to provide a more concise tool to prepare students for applied learning. They have recently researched a software application, “Purple Briefcase”, which is utilized by Monroe, Oneonta, Finger Lakes and Onondaga Community Colleges. It will serve as a record keeping, report running, communication sharing, event planning, networking and all-purpose computer application system for both staff and students. It is an all-in-one, cloud based services management tool. It will enable ECC to report the number of graduates who participated in applied learning activities.

In the near future, it would be optimal for ECC to create a Center for Applied Learning and Civic Engagement. The intention of the center would be to align geographically with Career Services. ECC is seeking grants and funding outside of the college to accomplish this goal.

• Assist in the development and promotion of curricular strategies that integrate hands-on experience with service to enhance students’ sense of personal values and civic responsibility

• Work closely with Academics, Student Services and Public Relations to encourage the implementation and inclusion of applied learning into course curriculum and publicize the recognition and celebration of student, faculty and staff achievements throughout the campus and community

• Create mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships with WNY community and facilitate the communication to grow the relationship between partners and academic departments

• Collaborate with other regional learning institutions in the sharing of resources, knowledge and best practices to disseminate this information campus wide

• Assist faculty with the coordination of referrals to the Career Center for students requiring internship and job readiness preparation, including, but not limited to, resume, cover letter, soft skill and interview practice

• Partner with the Career Center and tailor applied learning opportunities accordingly

Page 5: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

• Provide campus wide internship program information and assist with the expansion of internship course work within academic departments

• Inform academic departments on compliance with State Education Department, Department of Labor and SUNY policies to maintain appropriate accreditation

Question #3

What is your plan for using these data to measure student success and institutional outcomes (such as persistence, intention, graduation rate, student engagement, student employability)?

Coupled with data concerning student employment to be garnered via an agreement with the NY State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), ECC intends to utilize applied learning data to develop, track, and promote success in the following rates:

• Applied Learning Rates for all students. Disaggregated by program, by campus, by demographics, and by instruction type code (by Spring 2017).

• Annual Earnings Rate for graduates. Disaggregated by program, by campus, by demographics, and by applied learning experiences. • Annual Earnings Rate for non-graduates. Disaggregated by program, by campus, by demographics, and by applied learning experiences.

The applied learning rates would be generated from the Term-Section submission’s TT090, TT095, and TT210 codes. The earnings rates would be generated by the college’s NYSDOL data requests. The college is currently in the process of applying for the UI Data Sharing Program with NYSDOL.

FACULTY ENGAGEMENT

Question #1

Provide an overview of current faculty responsibilities regarding oversight and assessments of approved learning activities. What is your process for approval of new or customized faculty-initiated activity?

Faculty department chairs, professors and instructors currently provide oversight and assessment of approved learning activities. The individual/academic college professionals must have certification/qualifications in the discipline of which the student has requested an applied learning experience. The department chair provides the paperwork for the student, instructor and supervisor of the business/organization where the student will complete an internship, for example. When all signatures of the student, department chair and participating business/company are entered on the form, approval is required from the academic dean for finalization.

The faculty member is responsible for providing a syllabus to the student. The syllabus will indicate if the student shall receive credit or not for the experience. In the event the student will

Page 6: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

receive credit, the student must complete 45 hours of activity to earn 1 credit hour. A copy of all paper work required during the applied learning experience must be signed and kept on file in the college academic department.

The faculty member is responsible for preparing and monitoring the student throughout the applied learning experience. Often, the faculty with make site visits to the business/organization where the experience is taking place. The faculty member is also responsible for maintaining communication with the site supervisor.

The faculty member provides all rubrics and forms of assessment for the student and is responsible for assessing the student to enable the student to receive a grade for the experience if applicable.

Approval of new or customized faculty-initiated activities in specific programs must be presented at a College Senate meeting. Changes made to curriculum must be approved by the College Senate prior to revamping courses and or programs.

Question #2

Describe how faculty who currently oversee these approved activities are supported. What supports (such as events, workshops, other professional development, compensation) will your campus provide?

Professional development for faculty is available on a first come first serve basis. The Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment provides funding for professional development and approves the professional development by forwarding the request for professional development to academic deans and the college vice president. If the professional development is approved, the faculty member can move forward to participate in the seminar or conference. When funding from CTLA is gone, the faculty member must pay for their own professional development.

Question #3

Describe any current campus methods for supporting new faculty activities.

New faculty receive support upon being hired through the Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment at the college. They receive an overview of opportunities for their own personal

professional development and they are informed of supports available for students. This takes place prior to the semester in which they are hired.

Page 7: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

Question #4

What is your campus plan for acknowledging engaged faculty?

At this time, we are acknowledging engaged faculty by posting their achievements on ECC Today which is the college’s online communication page located on the www.ecc.edu website.

Faculty members might also be provided with a plaque from the college to recognize their achievement. Businesses will often recognize faculty by providing an award or certificate for their contributions to the community.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

Question #1

Provide an overview of the supports offered to students who are interested in taking approved applied learning activities. How can students currently navigate approved activity offerings? What is your approval of new or customized student-initiated activity?

Students can learn about applied learning activities by visiting ECC’s website. They can meet with an Internship Coordinator or a Service Learning Coordinator (both individuals have phone and e-mail contact information posted on the website) to discuss their options. Students must be in good academic standing with a GPA established by the specific academic department or business partner to complete an applied learning activity.

Question #2

Describe how applied learning activities are promoted to and shared with students. How is information about applied learning activities built into the orientation and advising process?

During advisement in the General Studies Department at ECC, students are introduced to several courses offered through General Studies. The first course is GS111 College Success Skills. Instructors who teach this course discuss opportunities for applied learning activities. Instructors direct students to areas of the college website where they can learn more about applied learning opportunities. Another course offered in the General Studies Department GS113/114 includes required community service activity to earn 1 credit toward the 3 credit course. GS290 Internship is available for students who are interested in earning 3 credits when they complete an approved internship.

Page 8: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

Question #3

What is your campus plan for formally incorporating student feedback into each applied learning activity? What process does or will a student follow if they have a grievance with an off campus site?

Depending on the requirements of the instructor when an applied learning activity is offered to a student, ECC is encouraging faculty to incorporate student feedback based on the applied learning experience activity. Often times, students are required to keep a journal throughout their experience. There is also a student feedback form included in the updated Guide for Internships and Co-Ops that will be utilized.

Prior to the student participating in an applied learning experience, students will be advised to speak with the faculty member who is overseeing the applied learning activity before filing any form of grievance against an individual or company. In the event the grievance is not resolved among all parties involved, ECC will receive legal representation through Erie County.

Question #4

What is your campus plan for including students in the continued improvement of existing applied learning activities and development of new applied learning activities?

ECC plans to continue to maintain current relationships with community partners to provide structured, meaningful and engaging applied learning opportunities for students. Efforts to develop new applied learning activities will include advertising experiential learning opportunities on our college website and contacting appropriate businesses who might be willing to offer our students learning experiences to prepare them for their upcoming careers. We will include a statement online indicating that students have the ability to locate their own applied learning experiences, but they must be approved and monitored by qualified faculty.

InternShop will also be housed on our college website to advertise available internships and on-the-job learning.

Each semester, various committee members from the SUNY Applied Learning team will meet with the Student Government Association to discuss the ways in which the process of offering applied learning experiences can be improved upon to meet the needs of our diverse student population.

A. SUNY Applied Learning Campus Plan

Campus Applied Learning Plan Part V

Feasibility Study Due May 1, 2017

Campus Name: Erie Community College

Date:

Narrative Compiled by:

Patrick Ryan, Director of Distance Learning and Alternative Programs

Summary

Language in the 2015-16 Enacted State Budget (in an “Article VII” bill) directed the SUNY Board of Trustees and SUNY to develop a plan to make approved applied learning activities available to SUNY students enrolled in the 2016/17 academic year. This plan will include individual campus plans. Based on this language the Applied Learning Steering Committee has broken campus plans into VII parts. This assignment represents Part V of VII of campus applied learning plans and asks questions to determine campus capacity to support applied learning. Part V should be submitted as a descriptive narrative regarding your current campus-level processes and policies relating to approved applied learning activities, your future plans, and campus ability to include approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement. All parts of the Campus Applied Learning Plans must follow local campus governance processes and be approved by campus governance leaders. Please refer all questions to [email protected].

Question 1

Do you currently measure impact of campus-approved applied learning on the local community and workforce? If so, what methods do you employ?

Currently, Erie Community College does not measure the external impact of campus-approved applied learning in the form of numbers or charts. The college has a goal of identifying such metrics in its strategic plan – ECC Excels – and has a five-year target of developing a full measurement system for external as well as internal engagement, including the impact of applied learning activities. Those efforts are in early stages of development.

The college has been archiving the successes of projects documented throughout the local media. In addition to creating a historical database of past applied learning projects, it is

Page 10: Erie Community College - SUNY · 4/15/2016  · report activities independent of programs/courses requiring experiential learning to the Internship Coordinator and Service Learning

evident in the number of long-term relationships with local collaborators and facilitators that these relationships are having a positive impact. Specific metrics under consideration at this time are project duration, the number of students impacted, student’s personal reflections (collected via assessment surveys), the organization’s immediate perceived impact (also collected via surveys), and qualitative interviews with impacted organizations 6-9 months after the experience in order to improve the experience from the organizational perspective.

Question 2

How could including approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement enhance or hinder student completion? Currently 82% of our programs require some type of approved applied learning activities in their program (see “AL Programs” tab in the attached workbook – “Applied Learning Feasibility Study – Supporting Data” – hereafter referred to as “Workbook”). The composition of approved applied learning varies throughout the various degree programs. Students at Erie Community College in the Business & Public Services, Health Sciences, and Engineering Technologies Units enjoy a long tradition of “learning by doing”.

Erie Community College’s course assessment and program review procedures allow the College to review that all embedded and external applied learning are meeting the Criteria for Approved Applied Learning, while also meeting the course’s Learning Outcomes, and Program Competencies.

ECC Excels itemizes Engagement (including civic engagement, campus climate/culture, employee development/ engagement, philanthropy, student engagement, and workforce development) as one of its five areas of focus. The plan recognizes that AL bolsters student engagement and, as a result, promotes student degree/certificate completion. As a result, the college – in June of 2016 – established a five-year project to provide service learning opportunities to all matriculated students. While this does not constitute a local graduation requirement, it will serve to establish ECC’s commitment to applied learning and community service and thus promote the college’s completion agenda.

A firm graduation requirement would be difficult for the college to accomplish given that the provision of service learning opportunities in each program will not necessarily be tied in all cases to required coursework. However, coupled with the 82% of programs that currently already require applied learning in some form (including service learning, in some cases), the college is very confident that it will reach very close to 100% of its student body through this approach.

Additional program-specific and course-specific information is available in the attached Workbook). See the four “ECC Courses” tabs in addition to “AL Programs” and “Programs without AL.”

Question 3 Please describe the campus opportunities and challenges of including approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement. Please describe

implications for student learning outcomes, advising, staff and fiscal implications, and other relevant information. As explained above, further development in support of the service learning project outlined in ECC Excels – a project that is already in the implementation stage – will allow the college to move close to 100% coverage of at least one type of applied learning activity for all matriculated students. A formal graduation requirement would allow the college to more closely align institutional learning outcomes with its Mission and Vision, but would present an implementation challenge in those units that currently do not infuse applied learning in their curricula. Some curricula would find it challenging to develop appropriate infusion of applied learning into coursework or degree/certificate requirements. However, doing so would move the college closer to the institutionalization of its vision statement, which reads that the college will “serve as an innovative learning resource by striving for universal access to lifelong learning, catalyzing economic and cultural development, and supporting a diverse and mobile student body.” Given the already high rate of applied learning infusion in the institution, the college has determined that a local graduation requirement is not necessary at this time. However, as the current five-year strategic plan draws closer to completion in 2020-2021 the college will re-evaluate this position. A further challenge pointing away from a local graduation requirement is the fact that some programs have few required courses. Our Liberal Arts and Sciences General Studies A.S. program, for example, only has two required courses, with the rest of the curriculum being SUNY General Education and Open College Electives. This would present an implementation challenge that could be met by a portfolio requirement, but which currently does not exist within that program.

B. SUNY Applied Learning Campus Plan

Campus Applied Learning Plan Part VI

Collaboration Plan

Due May 1, 2017

Campus Name: Erie Community College

Date:

Narrative Compiled by:

Regina Lettieri, Assistant Project Director, Service Learning

This assignment represents Part VI of VII of campus applied learning plans and focuses on collaborations in applied learning. This plan should be submitted as narrative with questions answered in the spaces provided.

Please refer to language about facilitators included in the Criteria for Approved Applied Learning Activities.

All parts of the Campus Applied Learning Plans must follow local campus governance processes and be approved by campus governance leaders.

Please refer all questions to [email protected].

Question 1

Please provide an overview of the various types of on- and off- campus collaborators/facilitators who engage in Applied Learning. Be sure to list the responsibilities and roles for each. These may include any business/corporate, non-profit, state and other hosts/facilitators.

ECC has many partner agencies/collaborators who engage our students in applied learning activities. Their roles vary greatly depending on the nature in which our students are engaged. A full list is provided in the Workbook in the tab titled “Part VI – Q1.”

The dataset makes it clear that ECC has a broad reach to industry partners as well as an applied learning program that reaches across many departments within the institution. Institutional facilitators tend to be ECC faculty members while external collaborators are a range of agencies, other educational institutions, businesses, and various non-profits. The following academic departments are represented:

Architecture Technology Autobody Repair Automotive Technology Automotive Technology - Ford Asset Automotive Technology - MOPAR CAP Baking & Pastry Arts Building Management & Maintenance Building Management and Maintenance Building Trades/Residential Light Commercial Casino Gaming Machine Repair Technician Communication Arts Computer & Electronics Technology Computer Aided Technology Criminal Justice Culinary Arts Dental Hygiene Emergency Management English Environmental Science Environmental Technology Geoscience ESL Students ESL Students & Math Fire Protection Technology General Studies Green Building Technology Hotel Restaurant Management Industrial Tech Industrial Technology

The data shows that 44 out of 70 collaborations (62.9%) are at least partially on-campus while 45.7% are at least partially off-campus (the data sum over 100% since some collaborations are a mix of on-campus and off-campus).

Many of the collaborations (62.9%) are not tied to a course are are instead the product of a collaboration at the departmental or institutional level. This might represent an opportunity for the institution to improve the rate at which students receive academic credit for applied learning.

Question 2

Describe any existing methods used to support intentional and reciprocal relationships on and off campus. List the offices or structures on campus currently supporting these relationships. Individual academic departments incorporating clinical and practicum components have a structured process in place for the establishment and maintenance of applied learning partnerships as students are placed in the field and often provide hands-on patient care and services. The vetting process for such partnerships is extremely involved and includes Board of Trustee approved Affiliation Agreements as well as Certificates of Liability Insurance. In order to improve access to such external partnerships the college has recently hired an Internship Coordinator to assist departments with this important legal requirement.

ECC also has a structured process in place for credit bearing internships/Co-ops. Programs that have mandatory internship/Co-op components also establish and maintain their student internship placement sites. The process for the establishment of an internship placement site is very similar to that for a clinical and practicum placement. Board of Trustee approved Internship Affiliation Agreements and Certificates of Liability Insurance need to be in place. In addition, Internship/Co-op Learning Agreements are completed individually for each student. The agreement is signed off by the internship/Co-op site supervisor, faculty and the student. It clearly lists expectations and duties of the student and the responsibility of the faculty member and the site supervisor. These agreements are completed to

assure that all of the internship learning outcomes are achievable by the student. Placement site supervisors are responsible for providing ongoing supervision and evaluations for students and for providing regular reports as to the students’ performance.

Other applied learning activities have similar process for establishing partnerships. For example, many Service Learning partnerships are established through the Western New York Service Learning Coalition which is a collaboration and network of colleges, universities and non for profit organizations with a commitment to sharing resources, knowledge and best practices in order to strengthen campus partnerships and students’ Service Learning experiences. The role of the partner agency varies greatly in relation to the type of activity the students are involved in. Many Service Learning activities are project based and involve hands on participation and supervision by faculty. They often take place on campus and require minimal paperwork to be completed by the community partner. ECC employs a Service Learning coordinator who assists with the establishment and maintenance of community partner agencies for academic departments as needed. Many academic departments also work on their own to establish relationships that lead to some of Service Learning projects listed above.

ECC is currently developing a mapping process and procedure for the dissemination, and marketing of various community service opportunities available for students. Once this is complete, there will be a centralized location to direct organizations interested in recruiting student volunteers.

Question 3

Describe how your campus engages new community partners. ECC engages new community partners in various ways. Many partners are engaged through the Western New York Service Learning Coalition (discussed in Question 2). A conversation will take place between the Service Learning Coordinator and the representative from the community agency to assess what their needs are and how these needs can be met through a Service Learning initiative. Once this is established, a meeting occurs with a faculty member from the appropriate subject area to discuss the partner need and the feasibility of their students’ participation.

Erie Community College faculty provide a dynamic resource for industry partnerships in their individual disciplines. Faculty in the divisions of Business and Public Service, Health Science, and Engineering & Technologies regularly introduce their professional connections to the campus and facilitate opportunities for applied learning through their robust network of colleagues throughout the region.

This assignment represents Part VII of VII of campus applied learning plans and asks each campus to determine whether they can include approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement. The feasibility of requiring approved applied learning activities for all students includes a decision as to whether this academic methodology is sound and appropriate to include in curriculum, as well as determination of the local community’s ability to support the number of students enrolled. Having knowledge of the number of students currently engaged in approved and required applied learning activities may help campuses make an informed decision.

All parts of the Campus Applied Learning Plans must follow local campus governance processes and be approved by campus governance leaders.

Please refer all questions to [email protected].

Question 1

Based on the data reported to SUNY System Administration in Parts I-VI of campus plans, will your campus include approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement? No, although the college currently requires applied learning activities in a very large proportion of its degrees and certificates and has built a goal to reach all students within its current five-year strategic plan.

Question 2

Describe the specific reasons for this decision. Please note which governance bodies and other campus stakeholders were consulted in the process and have approved the decision, including student governance.

Currently Erie Community College has 83% of its programs requiring approved Applied Learning. The remaining 17% of the programs will require an investment of time and resources to integrate applied learning into the curriculum. The College has established a plan to assist programs in reviewing the opportunities and challenges at play with the specific program requirements, working within the established curriculum of the degrees. Applied Learning directly relates to ECC Excels, and is supportive of the overall Strategic Plan of the College as well as its Vision Statement as explained above.

Throughout this process an Applied Learning Committee was organized to review all course outlines, create a database of historical and current applied learning opportunities embedded in the classroom and outside in the local community, Departments were surveyed and finally, Department Chairs and faculty were interviewed to ensure none of the good work our students and faculty do was overlooked. These plans have been presented and approved by both the Applied Learning committee and the College Senate.

Question 3

If your campus plans to move forward with a graduation requirement, which approved applied learning activities will be required? How will the requirement be verified, and who will oversee the requirement? When will the requirement become effective?

Question 4

If your campus does not plan to make approved applied learning activities a graduation requirement, what is your plan for sustaining current and future applied learning work? The College employs several employees who are tasked with maintaining, supporting and growing the Applied Learning program at the College, including a Service Learning Coordinator and an Internship Coordinator. The college’s staff has been tasked with developing a plan to make opportunities for Service Learning available in every academic program and to further the college’s strategic engagement agenda.

The College also has a robust Health Service division contributing to applied learning. Each program within Health Sciences has either a Department Head or a Department Chair in charge of the program. These individuals are responsible for maintaining Clinical hour levels within their program. A Vice Provost is responsible for the division.

In addition, a Dean of Students works closely with Student Government to help them expand and document their Community Service activities.

Furthermore, within the college’s shared governance structure there is extensive support in place to promote applied learning. The Applied Learning Committee was established for the purposes of investigating the SUNY initiative and respond to the initial legislative mandate. Throughout the process, the College has learned that many of the programs on campus are providing students with Applied Learning that meet the SUNY Criteria for Approved Applied Learning. Currently the College utilizes course assessments, and the Departmental Program Review as a means to review that Applied Learning is happening as either an embedded part of the course, or an experience that is occurring outside of the classroom. Outcomes are not actively gathered or archived for reporting on lessons learned or providing insight on how student learning and or engagement could be improved.

For purposes of ensuring the integrity of ongoing Applied Learning work at Erie Community College, this committee will remain in place with the role of archiving outcomes of Applied Learning Activities and serving as the lead governance committee on the future of Applied Learning at ECC. These Applied Learning opportunities will be demonstrative of real-world, hands-on experiences, and should be thoughtfully integrated into coursework. Faculty in their respective disciplines are best tasked with creating these experiences. However, the College has a responsibility to verify that the student’s learning objectives are being met. The Applied Learning Committee will help to facilitate a trusting relationship with open communication between faculty, Advisory Boards, Institutional and Community Collaborators. This is essential for the success of these activities. The Applied Learning Committee will be ready to assist in assessment and evaluation strategies, assisting in providing opportunities for structured reflection and acknowledgement of student learning.

Criteria for Approved Applied Learning Activities Definition:Applied learning refers to an educational approach whereby students learn by engaging in direct application of skills, theories and models. Students apply knowledge and skills gained from traditional classroom learning to hands-on and/or real-world settings, creative projects or independent or directed research, and in turn apply what is gained from the applied experience to academic learning. The applied learning activity can occur outside All manner of experiences including high-impact practices and traditional applied learning education can be considered approved applied learning activities if, and only if, they meet the criteria listed. When applied learning is embedded in a course, these criteria refer to the activity rather than the course as a whole. Regardless of the activity, both the experience and the learning are fundamental. The Activity is Structured, Intentional and Authentic - All parties must be clear from the outset why this specific experience was chosen as the approach to the learning, and intentional about defining the knowledge that should result from it. The activity needs to be a structured experience with a formal process, which includes a course syllabus or learning contract between parties (students, faculty, and other supervisors as appropriate) and/or defined assessable learning outcomes. Roles and responsibilities must be clearly defined. Faculty and site supervisors (as appropriate) are expected to take the lead in ensuring both the quality of the learning experience and of the work produced. The applied learning activity should have hands-on and/or real world context and The Activity Requires Preparation, Orientation and Training - Participants and mentors must ensure that students enter the experience with sufficient background and foundational education, as well as a plan to support a successful outcome. The training and plan should include learning expectations and be referred to (and The Activity Must Include Monitoring and Continuous Improvement - Applied learning activities are dynamic. Therefore all facilitators in the activity share responsibility for ensuring that the experience, as it is in process, continues to provide a rich learning environment and is meeting learning outcomes. Activities include a defined and flexible method for feedback related to learning outcomes and quality performance for all parties. The Activity Requires Structured Reflection and Acknowledgment - There must be a structured opportunity for students to self-assess, analyze, and examine constructs/skills/insights from their experience and to evaluate the outcomes. Reflection should demonstrate the relevance of the experience to student learning, including the student’s articulation of how the experience draws on and improves this learning and meets defined objectives. Post-experience learning should include a formal debriefing. All facilitators and students engaged in the The Activity Must be Assessed and Evaluated - Outcomes and processes should be systematically documented with regard to initial intentions and quality outcomes. Students must receive appropriate and timely feedback Modified from Eight Principles of Good Practice for All Experiential Learning Activities, National Society of Experien

OpportunitiesOpen Business Elective could be limited to existing Business courses with AL: BU240, BU242, BU248. Students do take the required prereq for these courses.

One of the four business electives could be required to be the established AL courses: BU240, BU242, BU248, BU252 students do take req'd pre-reqs.

Open Business Elective could be limited to existing Business courses with AL: BU240, BU242, BU248. Students do take the required prereq for these courses.

General Education Elective could require students to take an approved ALSignificant industry connections to broadcasting industry

IN110 Crime Scene Photography is likely an AL course and should be further examined

*Math/Natural Science elective could be an approved AL course

*Open Elective could be an approved AL course*Criminal Justice elective could be required CR230/CR231 sequence an approved AL courseThis is an AAS Degree - it should have AL - It should be reviewed again. This degree is comp

Needs to be reviewed, It appears this degree does meet req's.

*10 open electives: students could be required to take one of any of the AL courses already established on campus.

*GS111 has precedent for including service learning, it could be a req'd not recommended course, and could include SL

Similar approach as to 250GST - students who take Honors Capstone would complete AL

Challenges• Limits student options.

• may require additional courses to be restructured to include AL, requiring faculty time to rewrite existing curriculum.

• Advising will need to ensure students meet the established requirements.• a survey of graduate transcripts may indicate many already do take these classes for completion

• students have three other electives so challenges are limited• Limits student options.

• may require additional courses to be restructured to include AL, requiring faculty time to rewrite existing curriculum.

Advising will need to ensure students meet the established requirements.

Certificate Program with not many courses required. May not be feasibleIf IN110 is not an AL course, it should be modified to become one. If photography instruction and physical application of photography is not taking place this course title is misleading.

This degree has the prereq for CR230/CR231 scheduled concurrently with the open elective, may require a redistribution of electives throughout degree.

This degree has 5 concentrations, and 5 courses that need to be taken in each of those concentrations. Currently only the Cybersecurity and Networking concentrations include AL

*many students do not seek advisement, so the college would need to make the AL designation a clear listing in the college catalog and the Schedule Booklet that is published.

*requiring GS111 to be an AL that includes service learning, would be a good way to avoid the reprocussions of a student missing the AL requirment.

In these courses students are assigned a design problem asked to find a solution over the course of many hours of exploration, and finally present to a series of industry and academic professionals how they arrived at their conclusion and argue its validity. These problems are solved through a rigorous exploration of the creative design process. Students explore and discover through a series of generative design techniques.

on-going In the spring of 2017 will be working on an ACSA design competition entitled Here + Now focusing on housing. This course teaches students about residential working drawings and construction, so the fit and timing of this competition is perfect. The department is working directly with the City of Buffalo who has provided the students with a vacant lot for their house design. The City will also be giving the students hands-on instruction on the new Green Code (the name of Buffalo’s zoning code).

on-going The students are given projects that enforce communication, information literacy, quantitative reasoning, technological competence, and to a limited extent scientific reasoning. These elements all work together in comprehensive projects that are reviewed by faculty, but are also subjected to peer reviews. Students are expected to review each other’s work prior to submitting for a grade. This practice reinforces communication and collaboration that occurs in an office setting and empowers students to recognize the importance of deliberate and intentional production. These learning outcomes are enforced through a series of pin-ups of student work, redlining and documenting student improvement.
