Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Signage and Identity Project Description: Develop, fabricate, and install kiosks at 45 locks , terminals, and canal-side access points along the four branches of the New York State Canal System. Locations were selected to serve boaters, trail users, and auto-borne visitors. Installation sites are on NYS Canal Corporation land, in or near community centers. Most locations are on the opposite bank from the Canalway Trail to avoid duplication with existing trailhead signs. Each location will have a two or three-sided upright mount with exhibit panels that are 3’wide by 4’ tall. One side will carry a standard panel with a map, images, and text that describe the entire 524 mile long system. Thirty-five sites will have community orientation panels on the opposite side of the mount. The principal element of each community panel will be a newly developed map showing streets, trails, and points of interest within walking distance (roughly one-mile radius) of sign location. Map symbols and will identify visitor services such as: visitor centers, museums, public libraries, parks, historic districts, and other points of interest, along with public services such as post offices, hospitals, and police, fire, and ambulance stations. Business districts will be indicated with shading but individual businesses will not be named. Twenty-three sites will have a third community history panel based on a combination of 19th century “birdseye” view lithographs and early 20th century postcards, similar to ECNHC panels installed at Buffalo, Palmyra, and Cohoes. Implementation: ECNHC staff will be responsible for project management including coordination with Canal Corporation and municipalities, site selection, compliance, and approval of content. Staff of the NPS media design center at Harpers Ferry, WV (HFC) will provide technical oversight of contractors who perform planning, design, image acquisition, cartography, and fabrication. NYS Canal Corp will install the kiosks. The project is funded by a Federal Highway Administration SAFTEA-LU grant.
