Early life of Eric Carle

• Born on June, 1929 in Syracuse, New York

• Born to German parents Eric and Johanna Carle

• Parents got married in a Lutheran Church in 1928

The Works of Eric Carle

• Wrote many different types of children’s books that help teach children about the world

• The most famous of Carle’s work is probably “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”

• Usually contain the word “Very” in the title

• Also known for books such as “The Very Quiet Cricket”, “The Very Long Tail”, “The Very Busy Spider”, and many, many more

• Has written around 100 books and has sold over 88 million copies of his books

Major Personal Events In His Life

• Father put a great amount of influence on him to be a writer• When he was 15 he had to start digging trenches on the

Siegfried line• In 1952 he moved back to the U.S. and landed a job as a

graphic designer for the New York Times • He got his first major writing job after an author discovered an

illustration of a Lobster for an add he drew in the paper• From the Lobster illustration he landed a job doing

illustrations for “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”

• Received an honorary doctorate from Bates College in 2007• Strongly influenced by nature. He used to take long walks

into the woods

Major Historical Events

• Drafted into the German Army in WWII

• Was sent to Schwenningen to escape the bombings of Stuttgart

• Drafted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War

Influence On The Art World

• Created and influenced a whole new style of collage art that has been mimicked by many different aspiring artists

• Founded a Museum called “The Eric Carle Museum Of Picture Book Art”

• Google paid tribute to Carle by incorporating the design of his book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” into their logo

• As of today, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” alone has sold over 29 million copies worldwide

Stylistic Traits

• Uses Collages of different materials to make different creatures and scenery

• Creates additional dimensions to his art and makes pop outs in certain books

• Tries to recognize children's feelings through his art and stimulate their minds through his incorporation of colorful collages

• Tries to teach young children lessons about the world and stimulate the intellectual growth of their minds

My Artwork

• I overlapped multiple pieces of paper to create different shades

• I included the word “Very” in my title

• I individually painted each piece of paper and put them in a collage

• I related it to ironic natural occurrence

• I used the predominant colors he usually uses in his artwork
