ERHC are Prysmian’s (Pirelli’s) “Preferred Installer” for Blown Fibre. The Blown Fibre System provides a simple solution to manage evolving network demands without the need for high initial capital expenditure. It enables optical fibres to adapt to changing business environments and requirements.

Using this method we can offer a cost effective alternative to traditional cabling, utilising our Blown Fibre Engineers, which provides the following benefits:

Increased network design flexibility • Service provision on a just-in-time basis (Network on Demand); • Existing fibre links easily re-routed to new users; • Latest and emerging fibre technologies deployed; • Superior damage recovery performance over conventional methods; • Capacity to accommodate future network expansion with subsequent installations faster and more flexible.

Reduce initial expenditure/control on-going expenditure • Capital expenditure costs can be deferred; • Splice and breakout expenses minimised; • Deployment of fibres related to actual requirement; • Reduction of dark fibre.

Speed of Customer connections • Equivalent performance for first connections, significantly reduced timescales and costs for subsequent connections; • Existing tube routes can be interrupted at any location permitting rapid and simple network upgrades; • Easier customer connections enabled via direct network access points.

The blown fibre system has the capability to add more fibre, extending the reach of the network and introduce the next generation of fibres as demand changes - with minimal disruption and cost. This increases network design flexibility, reducing overall expenditure and substantially increases the speed of subsequent service provision.

M4 Widening J29 to J32

ERHC undertook the installation of roadside communication assets including associated infrastructure together with the civil engineering and traffic management for this project. Our use of innovative techniques plus local knowledge proved invaluable through the design, scoping and construction phases. Proposed design changes regarding the infrastructure and re-programming of key activities, addressing buildability issues contributed to the agreement of the target cost and timely completion.

ERHC offered an innovative alternative to traditional communications cable installation methods and were the first contractor to carry out the blown fibre technique on the road network within the UK.

Working with the Welsh Government and Carillion, ERHC provided design, technology and associated civil engineering infrastructure for this major widening scheme. Our activities included:

• Assistance provided for the product specification and methodology at design development stage; • Communications infrastructure design; • Removal of existing infrastructure and site clearance; • 19kms of trenching and ducting for the installation of infrastructure cabling, power and communications cabinets; • Supply, installation, testing and commissioning of communications network with circa 74km of cabling infrastructure in the carriageway; • Use of the Blown Fibre installation methodology; • Construction of CCTV and MS4 foundations, footways, access steps and hard standing areas; • Installation, testing and commissioning all equipment including MS4s and 64No. 3-lane MIDAS sites; • Practical and technical asset knowledge was instrumental to ensure that solutions were provided that resolved issues during construction.

“ERHC has proved to be an excellent, reliable asset to this project. They have been instrumental in its success by offering innovative solutions to very complex problems. Their partnering approach

ensured a very open and understanding relationship which has helped with the smooth delivery of a very demanding programme.”

Construction Project Manager, Carillion

ERHC developed a temporary CCTV system for recovery purposes enabling the monitoring of traffic flows from the Traffic Management Centre via the internet. In addition a solar powered Micro-Wave Traffic Classifier was supplied, installed and commissioned which provided useful information on vehicle volumes, speed and categorisation.

After handover the longterm maintenance of assets was made easier and safer bythe introduction of a CCTV track bracket attachment to the MS4 cantilever gantry superstructure which the team also designed.
