    Adiga makesChennai proud

On Tuesday evening, when a motleygroup of book enthusiasts gatheredat British Council for a review of the

short-listed winners of the Man BookerPrize 2008, Aravind Adiga was the darkhorse for a majority of them. In fact, forthe Guess the Booker Winner contest, which the library has been running forover a week, only 18 people had votedfor Adiga. This, out of the 160-odd votescast. Was it a mere guess or had thevoters actually read the book to havevoted him their favourite is not clear. However, for the judges of thisprestigious literary award, whoannounced their decision in the weehours of Wednesday, the 33-year-oldMumbai-based journalist was a favourite.Adigas debut novel, The White Tiger, wasdescribed as a perfect novel by the

judges, thus declaring him winner of theprestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction

for 2008.Far away from all the joyous greetingsthe writer has been getting was thehappiness of Chennaiites. Apparently, theauthor was born in Chennai in 1974, latermoving to Mangalore and Australia. Amajority of the publishing houses andwriters we contacted were not aware whothis overnight hero from Chennai is. Famedoesnt reach all corners, obviously.

Plastic money fraudstershave found a new and in-genious method to tricktheir victims. Shockingly,

the culprits replace the victimscredit or debit cards with almostsimilar-looking dummy cards,i.e., card previously stolen.

The smart exchange is usuallyrealised very late by the victim, which simultaneously gives moreworking time for the thief withthe stolen cards. Police say it is along chain, where one victimscards are replaced by those stolen

previously from another.Chennai City Police say this

kind of card exchange fraud isprevalent in northern India, anda software professional fromChennai became the recentvictim.

Gopi Krishna (name changed),a software professional from Pe-rungudi, was returning from Del-hi to Chennai in Tamil NaduExpress on September 29. Whenhis train passed Bhopal, he re-ceived two SMSes on his phoneregarding purchases made inGhaziabad in Uttar Pradesh usinghis credit and debit cards. Krish-na checked his wallet but foundhis four credit and two debit

cards intact. But when he re-ceived another SMS, he took outhis cards and examined them, only to receive the shock of hislife.

All his six cards had been re-placed with other cards with thenames of different people. Bythen, the culprits had swiped hisfor over Rs. 1.30 lakh at differentplaces in Ghaziabad.

A panicked Krishna called bothhis banks and blocked his cards.Upon reaching Chennai on Octo-ber 1, he lodged a complaint withthe City Police Commissioner.

Upon investigation it wasknown that the dummy cardsplaced in the victims wallet by

the culprits belonged to peoplewho had lost their cards and cashin similar fashion.

The owners of the cards Krish-na received have also beentricked by similar-looking cardsand had lodged police com-plaints in their respective areas.

We got to know that it is a longchain of credit card exchangefraud. A thorough investigation ison, informed a top investigatingofficer.

The culprits are smart to placesimilar-coloured dummy cards,so that the victim will take a whileto realise it and, in the meantime, they can wipe his account clean, the officer added.

The BBC is now in its laststages because budget cuts

will make it increasingly dif-ficult to maintain standards,

the corporations world affairseditor has warned.

John Simpson, one of BBCslongest serving news reporters, said the corporations future isbleak as the world service waspaying the price of the licence feebeing chopped away.

The future? Well, I dont think

that its going to look very goodfor the BBC.

I think the BBC we haveknown, for good or worse, is nowin its last stages, the veteran cor-respondent, whose career at theBBC spans more than 40 years, told an audience at the Chelten-ham Literature Festival.

According to Britains DailyTelegraph, the sixty-four-year-old foreign correspondent, whohas visited 120 countries, said theBBC was already cutting back onoperations across the board, as aresult of the effective cut in thelicence fee.

The grim assessment of the topeditor, who fears that he may be

sacked soon in horrible circum-stances, comes as the corpora-tion has been forced to cut 2,500posts and slash budgets for newsand current affairs as the result of

the lower than expected licencefee settlement.

In a letterto the Finance Minister, Gill thanked himfor exempting, in the previous budget, theimport of air weapons by renownedshooters from any customs duty. However,he rued the absence of such concession toimport of air pellets, saying, it has becomequite unaffordable for most of theupcoming shooters. Gill said India hasemerged as a shooting powerhouse andcited Abhinav Bindras gold medal feat atthe Beijing Olympics as a testimonial to the

fact.In view of the growing popularity ofshooting as a sport among the younggeneration, it would be highly desirable toextend duty exemption to air pelletson the same lines as has been donein case of air weapons, Gill wrote. The Sports Minister also cited thatMember of Parliament Naveen Jindal, himself a shooter, has been pursuingthe same issue for quite a while. After consultation with all thestakeholders, including National RifleAssociation of India, I have no hesitation inendorsing their request, Gill said. Thisstep will go a long way in promotingshooting in the country and help ingenerating many champions, he added.

The Formula One cartel will take a short hopover the East China Sea from the cool sur-roundings of Mount Fiji to hot and sultryShanghai for the penultimate round of the

2008 Formula One season. The Chinese Grand Prixat the Shanghai International Circuit has been onan area of reclaimed marshland some 40km fromthe centre of Chinas most densely populated city.

With McLarens Lewis Hamilton and FerrarisFellipe Massa locked in an intense battle for the

drivers championship (five points separate thetwo) and a revitalised Fernando Alonso in his Re-nault looking forward to upset all predictions, therace is expected to take an altogether new dimen-sion. Hamilton, who had a horrific weekend in Fiji,

will be eager to shrug off his recent error-pronedriving which had also robed him of a driverschampionship at the fag end of the last season.

Robert Kubica of BMW (72 points) also has thechance of spoiling the party for both McLaren andFerrari and a win at Shanghai will make the lastrace at Sao Paulo more interesting.

Nine of the 11 teams competing at this yearschampionship have registered themselves in thepoints table and for the wooden spoon holdersForce India and Super Aguri-Honda, Shanghai willprovide them another chance to redeem their sea-son. Although the ultimate result of Japan wasdisappointing, we could see that the level of per-

formance we demonstrated in Monza, which al-lowed us to go through to Q2, had returned. We

need to keep this motivation and improved paceuntil the end of the season and not let our heads godown. There is so much to still keep working for,

Vijay Mallya, chairman and managing director ofForce India said.

Rookie Adrian Sutil, who was running at the 10thposition in Japan before a tyre puncture robbedhim of a possible championship point, said:Shanghai is a very interesting circuit for the driv-ers, with a modern layout. I think with a whole

years experience behind us we have started to per-form much better and I hope in the last two races

we can actually last the distance and grab some

much-needed points.Giancarlo Fisichella, who had a podium finish in

2006, hopes to continue his love affair with thecircuit. Shanghai is a great circuit and I have hadsome good results there. Ive competed in everyrace since it came onto the calendar in 2004 andactually finished in all of them, so I will want tokeep up this record. My best result was a podiumin 2006 and in 2005 the points I got from fourthposition secured Renault the manufacturers title,so Ive got good memories there, he said. I think

we now have to keep pushing until the end of theyear. Ive gone too long without points and I dontwant to get to the end of the year without any onthe board.

If a bicycle is to be modified, the maximum you or I mightdo is fix some glinting acces-sories and a gear system. But

here is a Chennaiite who we cancall the Godfather of Cycle Cus-tomisation. Ergo introduces G.Rajendiran of Villivakkam, a 45-year-old lathe worker whodoesnt prefer simply pedallingregular bicycles but has designedrides for his own in a way thatonly he could explain (see pics).

    Rajendirans first innovative

cycle, which is longer than a San-tro car, stunningly has 10 shockabsorbers, 6 sprockets, 2 chains,a back pedal, an interesting

wheel alignment and seatingand weighs a total of 70 kgs. Thecycle might be familiar to manyof Chennais roadies as its oftenRajendirans ride to commutebetween work and home.

The cycle man says his obses-sion began after a dream in May,1998. Immediately after that Istarted gathering junk from Pu-dupet and soon started workinglate nights in my lathe shed. Icompleted the first cycle in sixmonths and it cost me about Rs.3,000, adds Rajendiran, whonow has four innovative cycles,of which two are yet to hit theroad.

Interestingly, the cycle manclaims that his fourth cycle (stillin the workshop) sporting paral-lel wheels (see pic) can fly when

completed. It can take off to upto 50 feet. Only 20 per cent ofthe job is complete as I didnthave enough funds to pursue it,laments Rajendiran, who says heneeds Rs. 50,000 more to com-plete his dream cycle. This bicyclebuilder asserts that he prefers towork all alone at night inside hisbrothers lathe shed in Villivak-kam. I dont get any assistancefrom anyone as there is a possi-bility of my ideas getting leakedout, informs Rajendiran aftershowing us a bunch of plandrawings on his dream cyclewhich he is determined to com-plete.

Ergo is really doing a nice job by providing lots of useful information. The one thing I love is that Ergo has given lots of information aboutthe concerts yet to happen. And I have attended many concerts basedon the time and date given in Ergo, which were really good.

But several times Ive regretted seeing the news about conductedconcerts published after the event is over. Likewise, even today (Tues-day, October 15) I felt I could have attended the concert which wasmentioned in page 2, but I did not know about it.

So it would be really great if Ergo gives news about these happen-ings in advance so that we can attend these. Giving them in a smallcolumn will be more than enough.

Since this is the only source for us to get information about all thesehappenings it would be really fantastic if this is done... Thank you...

The fast dwindling forest cov-er (Forest Survey of India2008 report states Indiasforest cover at 20.06 per cent
