FOOD FOR THOUGHT I believe, Lord, but let me believe more firmly.

I hope, Lord, but let me hope more surely.

I love, Lord, but let me love more warmly.

I repent, Lord, but let me repent more deeply.

My God, my Jesus, my all in all.

My Dear Parishioners,

When he addressed the International Congress that commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (2005), Pope Benedict XVI said, “The Church must be constantly renewed and rejuvenated and the Word of God, which never ages and is never depleted, is a privileged means to achieve this goal… In this context, I would like in particular to recall and recommend the ancient tradition of Lectio Divina: the diligent reading of Sacred Scripture accompanied by prayer that brings about an intimate dialogue in which the person reading hears God, Who is speaking, and in praying, responds to Him with openness of heart. If it is effectively promoted, this practice will bring to the Church … a new spiritual springtime.”

Lectio Divina is a personal encounter with God through the prayerful reading of Sacred Scripture. In simplest terms, the essence of Lectio Divina involves listening , understanding (meditation), reflecting (contemplation), praying, and acting.

In his Apostolic Exhortation on the Word of God, Verbum Domini (2010), the Holy Father describes how to apply the five basic steps in Lectio Divina as follows:

1. It opens with the reading (lectio) of a text, which leads to a desire to understand its true content: What does the biblical text say in itself?

2. Next comes meditation (meditatio), which asks: What does the biblical text say to me?

3. Following this comes prayer (oratio), which asks the question: What do I say to the Lord in response to His word?

4. Finally, lectio divina concludes with contemplation (contemplatio), during which you take up, as a gift from God, His own way of seeing and judging reality, and ask yourself: What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of me?

5. You do well also to remember that the process of lectio divina is not concluded until it arrives at action (actio), which moves the believer to make his or her life a gift for others in charity.

You can easily apply the spiritual practice of Lectio Divina, which literally means “sacred reading,” to any of the readings you hear proclaimed at Sunday or weekday Mass. If you do this before coming to Mass, God’s Word will speak to you more personally and deeply. It will be a “lamp for your steps” in daily life, and fill you with God’s Holy Spirit.

Sincerely in Christ, Monsignor Douglas J. Mathers

A Prayer For All Souls Day

Merciful God, I entrust the soul of [mention name] and all the faithful departed to Your fatherly care.

I pray he/she has received the promise of Heaven, and that they experience eternal joy in Your Presence.

Give courage and faith to the bereaved and all of us still on our earthly pilgrimage, so we may one day be reunited with our beloved dead in the warm embrace of Your Love.

AMEN.
