Overview of ERDAS APOLLO

ERDAS APOLLO is an enterprise-class, comprehensive data management, analysis, and delivery system enabling an organization to catalog, search, discover, process, and securely disseminate massive volumes of both file-based and web-enabled data. This solution consistently delivers virtually any digital object faster and with less hardware than competing server-based products. An interoperable OGC/ISO-based application that implements an out-of-the-box service-oriented architecture (SOA), ERDAS APOLLO is the solution for data management in the overall Hexagon Geospatial server story.

Available in three product tiers, ERDAS APOLLO suits a spectrum of organizations – integrating easily with other geospatial software and offering unparalleled performance even when handling massive data archives and many users.

ERDAS APOLLO Essentials is the fastest geospatial image and point cloud server in the world. A single server with standard hardware can serve terabytes of data to thousands of concurrent users. ERDAS APOLLO Essentials works with your GIS to provide geospatial data as quickly as possible.

ERDAS APOLLO Advantage is a comprehensive data management and delivery solution providing remarkable business value. This OGC/ISO standards-based solution can organize, securely manage and disseminate data within databases and also massive volumes of dynamic and static images, point cloud data, terrain, vector data, third party web services, and any digital resource in the enterprise. ERDAS APOLLO Advantage is scalable through clustering to meet an organization’s specific needs, ensuring unprecedented performance even when handling the largest data archives.

ERDAS APOLLO Professional is the most advanced product tier of ERDAS APOLLO. It offers on-the-fly geoprocessing through a powerful implementation of the OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) specification. Users can run an entire model, such as change detection, site analysis, or elevation change, completely contained within a single web processing service (WPS). ERDAS APOLLO Professional is unrivaled in the complexity of algorithms stored under the hood.

New Features for 2015

Vector Data Management for Databases Within ERDAS APOLLO 2014, additions were made to the product to allow for management of vector data stored in files. ERDAS APOLLO 2015 will now extend cataloguing to include feature data stored in databases, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and PostGIS. As many of our enterprise customers maintain their vector data in databases, this capability will allow them to effectively manage that data. It makes finding the data easier as well as the delivery of that data using standard OGC interfaces to a variety of client applications. For organizations with large geospatial data stored in database holdings, it is easy to forget what data is available, over what areas, and other metadata such as when it was collected. By using the ERDAS APOLLO data management capabilities, tracking this data becomes very easy and users are able to query and discover the data through easy to use interfaces and then have that data delivered through standard interfaces.

Data Management of Oracle Vector Data

Point Cloud Management & Delivery Previous versions of ERDAS APOLLO have allowed for the crawling and management of point cloud data sets, but they were treated internally as image files. ERDAS APOLLO 2015 now treats point cloud data as a first class citizen of the catalog allowing for metadata properties specific to point cloud data. As point cloud data becomes the more prevalent format for the basis of 3D data, users want to manage that data as true point clouds. Whether it’s for monitoring the work in an above ground mine, used to examine encroachments on utility lines, or to understand terrain and classification of large amounts of land, point clouds play a valuable role in many geospatial organizations. By cataloging point clouds as its own catalog data type, users can take advantage of the metadata captured specifically for point cloud data to discover the most appropriate data. In addition, the compression techniques used by ERDAS APOLLO can improve the efficiency of data storage and delivery. Point clouds can be streamed to the client application allowing for faster response during viewing.

Dynamic Image Styling On-The-Fly ERDAS APOLLO Essentials has added advanced raster styling options to portray geospatial imagery in a variety of different ways while still maintaining our industry leading delivery performance. Operations include band ordering, kernels, look-up/color tables, hill shading, band algebra/formulas, resampling and advanced transforms. All operations are performed dynamically per request so data is not duplicated. For customers looking to deliver Desktop-like image interpretation via OGC WMS or WMTS this new feature is incredibly powerful.

Data Management for CAD Formats ERDAS APOLLO 2015 helps organizations to organize their CAD (DWG, DXF, DGN) design files reducing the need to duplicate data across the enterprise. Whether these are geospatial holdings like land parcels or transportation networks or they are architectural drawings, ERDAS APOLLO allows users to add geographic context to their CAD data and manage these files alongside other geospatial and business data. End users can easily discover and retrieve CAD data using keyword-based and spatial searches within ERDAS APOLLO catalog.

Hand-held (Geotagged) Imagery Support Based on the proliferation of GPS-enabled cameras, low-cost UAV platforms and the expected growth of emerging UAV markets and applications, ERDAS APOLLO 2015 now has the capability to provide data management solutions for these sources, together with associated metadata. During the crawling of this data type, the Exchangeable Image File (Exif) metadata is retrieved and stored in the metadata properties. Along with metadata, thumbnail images are generated allowing the user to easily search the catalog for the appropriate data and see rendered views of the images over the given area.
