ROWING numbers of cases are emerging of motoristsing effectively forced to use their insurance company's

wn repair business instead of the trusted local repairer

ey wish to, even though they have the right to chooseeir own.The National Association of Bodyshops (the

tail Motor Industry bodyshop division) has reported ancrease in cases where trusted local bodyshops aresing business because of this. It is now common for

surance companies to insist that claimants use anproved repairer or pay an additional fee on top of theircess if they wish to pick their own.

GrahamThrelfall, head of NAB, said: We fullyderstand that an insurer wants to look after their

licyholders interests. However, from examples given to, there is a trend towards high quality bodyshops, whove successfully met industry standards, and marketed

emselves to attract customers or retain existing ones, sing business. Unfortunately because of the additional

e being applied by insurers, consumers feel that, ancially, they are pressured into using the insurersproved repairer. Investigation leads us to believe that,

hilst not illegal as the terms are detailed in policy

documents and donot remove theright to choose

    their ownrepairer, it does

    penaliseconsumersfinancially if they

    choose to use anunapproved

    repairer.

HE condition of a vehicles tyres is crucial to its safe use.res are a vehicles only contact with the road.

Youve probably heard many times about the importancechecking tyre pressures and replacing worn tyres.

nfortunately, too many motorists are complacent or

reless about the condition of the four pieces ofbber that keep a car safely on the road.

or race drivers, worn tyres or the wrong choice of tyreeans the difference between winning and losing, andaying on the track or running out of control and off it.

Motor racing is a good way to illustrate the importancetyres.

During a race, youll notice that race cars go throughany tyre changes to maintain optimum performance andw lap times.

You will have noticed that race teams change the tyresthe cars according to the prevailing weather

    nditions.

n dry weather, slicks are used. Slick tyres have no tread, ving the tyres maximum surface area in contact with the

ad to grip most effectively on a dry road surface.owever, slicks are useless on a wet track becausethout grooves to clear the water away from beneath

e tyre, the tyre loses contact with the surface of thead and loses grip.A slick on a wet surface will quickly

d unexpectedly slide without any means of controllingRace drivers refer to this as aquaplaning. It is a real

danger for even the most skilled ofdrivers.

When the track is wet, racing slicksare replaced by race teams with wetweather tyres that have plenty of

tread the tread disperses waterfrom underneath the tyres to prevent

aquaplaning and to maintain tyrecontact with the road.

Of course, having different sets of

tyres for various road conditions isimpractical for normal road use.Thats

why conventional tyres for road useare designed with tread patterns that maintain optimumgrip in both wet and dry conditions.

Road tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mmto be roadworthy. Driving on anything less is extremelydangerous in wet weather; low tread depth cannot

disperse the water quickly enough allowing water build-upbetween the tyre and the road surface. When this occurs

the car loses grip with the surface of the road and mayeasily and unexpectedly slide. Loss of grip from poorperforming tyres is most dangerous in an emergency

situation when a car needs to stop quickly, or changedirection quickly.

Then, worn tyres can kill. When fitting new tyres to your vehicle, ask to have the

wheels checked for balance and alignment. Iteconomy if you dont. When wheels are out

or balance, the tyres will wear unevenly andshorter life.

Check tyre pressures regularly. Under-inflatalso lead to uneven tread wear, not to menthavoc with fuel economy.

Checking tyre pressures is also a good oppkeep an eye on the tyre tread. When the tre

down, youll notice that small bars will start across the tread, evenly spaced around the cof the tyre. These are called tread wear indic

when they become clearly visible, its time totyres.
