Accountability - …is the indicator of the district’s strengths and challenges;

…is the compass directing where we need to place our energy to improve;

…is our report to the public who fund our enterprise;

…is about all of our students.

Governor Linwood Holton’s 1970 inaugural speech

“… an aristocracy of ability, regardless of race, color or creed.”

• In 2008, to ensure that equitable educational opportunities were available

to all students, the Roanoke City Public Schools School Board analyzed and

adjusted elementary school and middle school attendance zones.

• As a result, several school closings and repurposing of buildings were

approved.

• Two elementary school buildings were repurposed, one became a site for

alternative education, and the other an academy for overage/under-

credited students. Thus far, the academy has had 853 graduates. Two

additional elementary schools and one middle school were closed.

• The Equity Policy was initially approved by the Board in June 2009.
