SpeakersDr Cate SteelBVSc, FACVSc, Diplomate ACVSM, Associate Professor of Equine Medicine & Surgery, Specialist in Equine Surgery Cate graduated from the UoM in 1987, and then trained as a specialist at Murdoch University and Michigan State University, USA. Cate became a Fellow of the ACVSc in Equine Surgery in 1997 (specialist in equine surgery). She has been the official veterinarian at many race meetings and endurance rides in WA. Cate then spent three years as a senior veterinarian at the Singapore Turf Club before heading to the USA for 18 months to work as an equine surgeon at UC Davis & Michigan State University.

Dr Sue JonesMVB, MRCVS Resident in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Sue graduated from University College Dublin and worked in equine practice before starting an internship at a large equine practice in the UK. She stayed in the UK for 3 years before moving to Australia where she worked on one of the largest thoroughbred studs in the Hunter Valley. Sue was then selected to do a Fellowship in Large Animal Ultrasonography at UCDavis in California. She returned to Australia where she took up a position at the UoA before joining the UoM U-Vet team as their first Equine Sports Medicine resident under the supervision of Dr Cate Steel in October 2016.

Dr Laura Nath BVSc MVSc Cert EM FANZCVSLaura is a registered specialist in equine medicine. She graduated with honours from the UoS in 2003. Thereafter she undertook an internship and remained at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital as an assistant to Dr Angus McKinnon for several years, gaining a certificate in Equine Stud Medicine from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK in 2007. Laura completed a residency in Equine Medicine with Dr Kate Savage and Dr Sally Church at the UoM. Through this she gained a masters degree after researching cardiac disease and gained fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in equine medicine in 2010.

Dr Jennifer Bauquier BVMS (Hons) DACVIM Lecturer in Equine Medicine Following graduation from Murdoch University, Jenni moved to the US to complete an internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala, Florida. Following this she remained in the US to undertake specialty training in large animal internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and was awarded Diplomate status of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine at the end of this training. Jenni returned to Australia to begin her PhD at the UoM undertaking research & joined the Equine Centre’s internal medicine service in 2014.

Dr Stuart Vallance BVSc (Hons) Diplomate ACVS, Registered Specialist in Equine SurgeryStuart grew up with horses on his family’s sheep and cattle farm near Ballarat, Victoria. He studied veterinary science at the UoM and graduated with first class honors. He then moved to Sydney to undertake an internship at Randwick Equine Center. Following this, Stuart moved to the northern hemisphere, and worked as an ambulatory race and sport horse veterinarian in Surrey, United Kingdom. In 2008, Stuart began his specialist training in equine surgery at the University of California, Davis, USA. Stuart returned to Australia in 2011 and has worked alongside Australia’s leading racehorse stables.
