Steven joins forces to provide
wider service provision
As many of you know, Steven Speers has successfully implemented a
physiotherapy service in Epworth. His business has grown from strength to
strength and he has a long list of testimonials from more than satisfied
patients. During the two and a half years he’s been trading from Epworth Leisure Centre, he has also been
working for the Lincoln Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic where he has developed a significant
client base and respect from fellow colleagues.
Steven is delighted to announce that he has become a partner at the Lincoln clinic and along with that,
they have taken on Steven Speers Physiotherapy to run alongside their five other successful clinics. “I’m
thrilled to have been invited to become a partner with this already successful Physiotherapy practice” says
Steven who will be one of four partners and will be running two of their six clinics.
Steven Speers Physiotherapy will now be known as Epworth Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic.
Steven will remain very much at the helm but highly experienced Physiotherapists will also cover during
busy periods.
Alongside this exciting new venture is the opening of a new clinic at Marshall’s Yard, Gainsborough. Steven
will also be managing the Gainsborough clinic supported by the Physiotherapists and administration staff
from the Lincoln practice. Steven has previously worked at the John Coupland Hospital, Gainsborough as
a Senior Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapist and so has developed an excellent reputation and rapport
with local GPs.
“I’m very much looking forward to working at the new Marshall’s Yard practice. It’s an excellent
opportunity to continue working in Gainsborough but in private practice” states Steven. He adds “I’m also
delighted with the success of Steven Speers Physiotherapy in Epworth. I have been really busy of late so
it’ll be will nice to offer patients alternative appointments to see me at the Gainsborough clinic”
Steven Joins partners Gavin Cummings, Anthony Glennon and Jane Seabrook. They currently have clinics
in Cabourne and South Hykeham, Lincoln, Market Rasen, Louth and now add Marshall’s Yard and Epworth
to their growing number of premises.
Steven is keen to reassure his Epworth patients of the same personal and confidential service he
previously offered. “The Leisure Centre is still an excellent venue to hold a physio clinic. I have become
very busy lately and owing to NHS work commitments, I haven’t been able to offer additional
appointments until now”. Patients can choose to come to Epworth or Marshall’s Yard with appointments
running up to six days a week. Both clinics have disabled access and ample free parking.

Events to mark 350 years of
influence will be taking place in the
North Lincolnshire town of
Epworth in December They are to
celebrate the 350th anniversary of the birth of
Samuel Wesley, whose sons - John and Charles -
formed a movement that went on to become the
world-wide Methodist Church.
Samuel Wesley, the determined Rector of Epworth
for nearly 40 years, had a huge influence particularly
on his sons John and Charles as they developed the
Methodist movement.
So a special weekend of events has been planned to
enable people to learn more about this man.
The first is on Saturday, December 15, at 3pm when
a lecture will be given by Peter Forsaith, Research
Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Methodism and
Church History.
The following day - Sunday, December 16 - at
10.45am a united service will be held in the little
market town where the preacher will be the Rev.
Dr. Brian Beck, former president and secretary of
the Methodist Conference. Both events will be at
the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church on
Epworth’s High Street.
An exhibition of artifacts, from Epworth Old
Rectory, which relate to Samuel Wesley will be on
display throughout the weekend.
The Old Rectory is a Grade 1 listed building, which
is now an accredited museum, and was the
childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who -
like their father - were both ordained into the
Church of England.re

Epworth Baptist Church has a
new minister. Over the last few years the
church based on Station Road in Epworth has seen
its congregation growing and alongside the friendly
and lively Sunday services and vibrant children's
groups ( services are at 10.30am each week all are
welcome) the church offers a range of activities
that serve the local community throughout the
week.
Jonathan Bramwell was invited by the church to be
its new minister earlier in the year, and in a special
service in October was officially welcomed by the
Baptist church and representatives from several
other local churches. Jonathan and his family have
moved from Stockport where he recently finished
his training to become a minister. They live in
Epworth and have children in local schools.
I would like to say a big thank you
to Mrs Linda Pattison of West
Butterwick who has delivered the
Arrow over the past few years! Linda has donated all the monies to the community
of West Butterwick and to Breast Cancer Care,
and they are over £500 better off! I am sure
everyone in the village appreciates her hard work.

Time to Rest
Wow! It’s Christmas Time already. There’s so much to do – cards to write, presents to
buy and wrap and meals to plan. When the children plead for a tree way before Christ-
mas Day, we rummage in the cupboard for last year’s decorations – and then replace
them with new and better! Then there’s the School production, the Christmas Fayre and
the Church Service to attend.... Is there no end to what needs to be done? We all need
time to rest.
There’s the rub. With so much going on, it’s so easy to miss Jesus! Some of you who read
Arrow may not want to see Jesus but you can hardly miss out with Carols blaring out even
as you shop. ‘O come let us adore Him’ – most carols are about Jesus. After all, it’s His
birthday party. We all need time to rest.
In the Churches, we go into overdrive. Christingle Services, Carol Services, Midnight ser-
vices, Crib Services, Christmas services and more. Some Churches even offer Mulled
Wine after worship! Wherever you live in the Isle, your local Church or Chapel will have
something planned which gives you time to rest and relax and think about Jesus the Son of
God. Watch out for full details on local notice boards and leaflets or in the local Press.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT
Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk
Neighbourhood policing priorities;-
1) Thurlow Park and surrounding area, Epworth - calls regarding anti-social behaviour have dropped, however we
have had cause to speak with several teenagers who we identified and I hope that this is the end of the matter.
2) Countrywatch - calls remain at a low level, however we have moved on vehicles acting suspiciously in certain
localities.
3) Belton Pavilion, Belton - reports regarding youths causing annoyance and anti-social behaviour have decreased,
however Neighbourhood staff will continue to patrol now that the nights are drawing in and assess the
situation. Local addresses nearby to the area have suffered from prowlers in their back gardens, and work is in
hand with North Lincolnshire Homes and Neighbourhood watch to reduce the fear that these residents are
suffering and would encourage anyone with any information about this matter to contact the police on 101 or
e-mail the Neighbourhood officers, details below.

BAD WEATHER ADVICE;- PLEASE could we ask that you complete your winter checks of your vehicles in
readiness and DO NOT leave your car unattended to warm -up before you use it. This gives a clear message
"STEAL ME", please don’t make your car cosy for crime.
USEFUL WEBSITES TO VIEW;- There are always new ideas being promoted to reduce crime and one which
is being promoted nationwide in order that it will make it easier for the Police to reunite you with your property.
Go to www.humberside.police.uk/immobolise for full details and how to register your belongings.
One other site I would encourage all parents and young people to look at is www.fearless.org - this site contains all
sorts of useful information regarding; - Sex crime, Drugs, Alcohol, Cyber crime including the do's and don'ts on
Facebook. I would really encourage every parent and their child to explore this site as it contains a lot of advice
and guidance when dealing with issues regarding Facebook and its use and which both schools and police are
regularly contacted about.
NEW SUPERVISOR - PS 2441 Tony Petty has joined us at Epworth as Ps Michelle Garlick has been temporarily
moved on to another position within Scunthorpe Division. If you wish to contact him please e-mail him; -

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 6
by
Anthony Catherall
Miss Marple comes to Epworth.
One can only assume that because of all the celebrations surrounding Princess Elizabeth’s Coronation in 1953 the E.M.P. had decided not to produce in that year. The Coronation however
was a great excuse for many to purchase small Black & White televisions. Many came with a large magnifying glass affixed to the front to increase the size of the picture to about twelve inches.
Rehearsals started at the end of 1953 for “Murder at the Vicarage” performed during March 1954, a plot devised and written by Agatha Christie. In St Mary’s Mead, no one is more despised
than Colonel Protheroe and even the Vicar had said that killing him would be doing a service for
the townsfolk. The Colonel is later found murdered in the Vicars study, two different people confess to the crime and Jane Marple is called in. Ella Dempster had been given this lead role in
the cast of fourteen. After the last six years of wonderful productions audiences were now coming from much further
afield. So the players gave a hearty welcome to visitors, Mr. F.G.M. Stennett, Gainsborough, and Mr. S.A. Stacey, Lincoln, representatives of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association;
together with the parties representative of the Belton Dramatic Society, the Gunthorpe Women’s Institute, The Haxey Amateur Society, and private parties from Crowle and Owston Ferry.
Thanks go to the Hull Daily Mail for the above photograph.

Now & Then - Then & Now No 44 by Anthony Catherall
This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images! Greetings, a peaceful and joyful Christmas 2012.
How many of you today, pop along to Torne Valley in Epworth to buy a thing or two?
As you apply your handbrake in their car park (bottom left) you are indeed parked on a former track bed and railway station, part of the Axholme Joint Railway opened to
passengers on Monday 2 January 1905. Sadly to close to passenger traffic only twenty-eight years later on 15 July 1933. Just imagine if it was a heritage railway today. Glance
across the road and you can still see the tree lined former railway embankment now with bungalows built thereon. See the Epworth station name on the fence, this was etched on
to the original negative by the photographer as there was no station name. The station wasn't opened at the time of the picture, the line of trucks are probably from the
Manchester Ship Canal company. Maws Mill can be seen behind boasting full sails. The
right hand picture shows the moderate climb up to the station from the road. We can see the slotted signal with the cross affixed and trucks on the line to Haxey. To the right of the
path was a station goods yard and we can observe the layout of that on the map bottom right. Bottom left is the current scene in 2012 of the car park of Torne Valley, and Fields
Manufacturing Joiners behind.

Axholme Camera Club News
Two Sherwood Forest men descended on
Axholme Camera Club on Tuesday the 23rd
October. Ian Taylor CPAGB is the Vice President
and the Awards Secretary for the “North East and
Midlands Photographic Federation”, and Mr Len
White CPAGB had come to give Axholme
members a talk and at the time the subject was
unknown.
The Axholme Chairman Mr Geoff Trinder opened
the meeting and introduced our visitors from
Robin Hood country and we all waited to hear
what the talk would be about. Ian started with a
demonstration on how to set up a four flash system
using remote switches to trigger the camera and
ensure the correct amount of light was thrown
onto the subject from each flash unit. The
demonstration covered all different configurations
of flash usage. The members found it a very
interesting subject which could be used when other
light sources were not available, i.e. a portrait
shoot in the middle of the moors when the light
has to be perfect. Ian followed this with several
short explanatory AVs on several different
photographic subjects.
After Tea and Coffee Len White followed on with a
selection of Digital Slides on Natural History
subjects, mainly birds. Len explained in some detail
how he was able to get most of the shots by just
being there at the right time. However, to be there
at the right time he carries a tent in the car and
will spend the night at the sight so he can be up
before the larks, this created a burst of laughter.
He continued saying that he would spend hours in
the hide or hidden in a ditch waiting for the right
moment.
Sometimes he
would have the
camera set up
and he would
need to trip the shutter by remote from several meters away. The
evening ended with questions and a vote of thanks from the Chairman.
On Sunday 4th November the Lincolnshire Photographic Association
organised the annual Digital Battles. This is when all clubs in
Lincolnshire are invited to put their best ten images forward to be
judged. The club with the highest score is the winner.
This year saw a great many excellent images with the Judge Mr Tony
Pioli ARPS ABPE. Commenting that the task of choosing the overall
winner would be difficult. The contest was won by Deepings Camera
Club with 176 points, followed very closely with 175 point was RB
camera Club and in third place was Axholme with 168 point. Its a very
well done to Axholme members for their high quality images.

At primary school (in the 1950’s for me) it was
the method to encourage us to learn by
memory, to learn by rote (by repetition) as my
teachers used to say. It could have been hymns, geographical
facts, historical facts, or especially the times tables. I understand that
today the times tables are still learnt, but often know in slightly
different ways—sometimes by songs or mobile telephone app!
We may think we do not have a good memory, but this Christmas we
will hear stories and carols which we will have learnt over the years.
Many of us remember the carols –even without the books to prompt
us. We have learnt them by rote or as it is sometimes said ‘by heart.’
However though we may say we have learnt by heart, we really mean
by memory. It is just a saying. But if we have really learnt with the heart we know not only the fact, but we
know what it means to us personally. Our emotions and very being are engaged.
So this Christmas as we sing our carols, may we not only know them by the very act of repetition over
the years, by rote, but know the meaning by heart, and in our hearts.
“What can I give him poor as I am? --Yet what I can i give him,
Give my heart.” (Christina Rosetti).

of England Primary School
Curriculum Week
This month we have had our annual curriculum week with a
focus on Design and Technology. Pupils were given a specific brief or
challenge and worked in pairs or groups to fulfil the task. Pupils had to go
through the steps of researching possible outcomes or methods, planning
their work as well as using their skills to make their item. Pupils were asked
to evaluate their working methods as well as their finished products and to
suggest ways in which these could be improved upon.
In Years 5&6 pupils were asked to create a labyrinth game linked to
their work on the Ancient Greeks whilst KS1 pupils had to design a
bridge over which Guy Fawkes could escape from the Houses of
Parliament! As well as their D&T skills pupils had to make use of their
basic maths and literacy skills as well as working
Ancient Egypt
This term Years 3&4 have been studying Ancient Egypt exploring the
topic through a cross curricular approach. A homework task was set
to create an Egyptian scene or diorama with some amazing results!
Later this term pupils will enjoy a day’s workshop creating an Egyptian
play which they will perform to parents.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
Earlier this term our Year 6 pupils were involved in organising a coffee morning for families and friends
of the school in support of the Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event. Cakes were donated
by staff and pupils, with the Acorn Nursery classes donating flapjack made by the children. Year 6 pupils
were on hand to welcome our visitors and to run games within the hall.
Others demonstrated the schools online learning platform to parents whilst
yet more acted as tour guides giving our visitors a full tour of the school at
work. Our Friends of
the School
committee helped
out in serving
refreshments. The
final, and most
enjoyable task for the
pupils was counting
our takings and we
were delighted to be
able to send £330 to
the Macmillan fund.
Remembrance Service
We were delighted to host All Saints Church’s
Remembrance Service this year with around 200
people attending. Representatives from the
British Legion, Guiding and Scouting Movements
as well as current servicemen were present.
Pupils from the school participated in the service
with readings and a performance by the school
choir. Following the service in school the
congregation walked to the war memorial for the
Act of Remembrance.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS – ST MARTIN’S AND
WEST BUTTERWICK CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Following last month’s School News, I am pleased to report that St Martin’s Key Stage 2 educational visit
to the National Railway Museum in York was a big success. The highlights of their day included viewing
the replica of Stephenson’s Rocket and ‘The Mallard’, a steam locomotive which was built in Doncaster in
1938. The world famous Flying Scotsman was marvelled at, currently in the workshop being restored.
The effort that the children had put in to a range of homework projects prior to the visit, which involved
the creation and production of PowerPoint presentations, was made all the more worthwhile through this
opportunity to experience much of what they had discovered through books and the internet first-hand.
Children and staff enjoyed workshops linked to Newton’s Laws of Motion and how these are applied to
trains as well as how forces influence the design and build of bridges.
On 9th November, at West Butterwick, the whole school participated in an ‘Eco-Day’ focusing on issues
linked to litter, sustainability & self-sufficiency (such as growing our own vegetables). This thought-
provoking day ended with children making pledges as to how they will help the environment based on the
discussions and information gathering that had taken place. The pledges can be seen on our new
school/federation website www.trentsidefederation.co.uk, along with a PowerPoint presentation of the
mornings’ outdoor work.
Both schools focused their minds, early November, on the significance of 11th November and the various
events that take place in our schools, the local community, nationally and within the wider world.
Discussions were based around Remembrance Day, Armistice and the Poppy Appeal as well as the
celebration of St Martin and his legacy within the Christian faith. St Martin’s pupils came together at a
Service of Remembrance held on Friday 9th November in St Martin’s Church.
Multi-cultural studies have featured strongly this term. On Wednesday 14th November we had a
thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening day’s learning based around the Zulu Culture. ‘Culture Connect’
visited to ‘bring the real Africa’ to our schools. (photo on front cover) Over the course of the day, pupils
explored various aspects of the Zulu Culture, such as regional music and dance as well as textile designs
and tribal costume. We would like to thank Valerie Taiwoo of Culture Connect for making this so
memorable for us all!
As November ebbs away, our thoughts
are now becoming increasingly focused
on Christmas. We are looking forward
to participating in Owston Ferry’s
Methodist Chapel’s Christmas Tree
Festival as well as having an Advent
Service in Owston Ferry Chapel on 30th
November. We are planning Christmas
productions. St Martin’s will be holding
its traditional Lantern Parade on the
evening of Friday 7th December. St
Martin’s pupils are particularly excited
this year, as one lucky child will be the
‘switcher on’ of the village lights on
Saturday 8th December (7pm). The
children have decided upon a
competition to enter in order to select
this lucky individual.
Happy Christmas to you all!

Two Authors, one village. Epworth has had its fair share of people who have gone on to fame and fortune. Sportsman Ian Botham
lived here for many years and his son Liam Botham went to South Axholme School. Sheridan Smith of
‘two packets’ fame was an Epworthian, and who can forget that guy from Eldorado. Recently David
Gatward returned to do a book signing at South Axholme to promote his teenage horror novels.
Hoping the follow in their footsteps are two new authors Rebecca Kershaw and Adele Carrington, both
locals and both with their first books just released.
Rebecca’s Bleed Black is a tale of youthful exploration and the consequences this can have in later life. It
follows a group of teenagers on the path of self-discovery in Northumberland.
Denial, the first of the Varcolac Journals, is Adele’s new look at the Vampire legends, using Romany
mythology and a main character who we can all connect with it takes the reader on a journey of blood,
sex and intrigue.
Battle of the Books
Adele got in contact with Rebecca after an Epworth Bells article; she couldn’t get over the coincidence
and just had to get in touch. After lots of coffee and cake, they decided to hold a Battle of the Books in
aid of Alexander Strong.
“We wanted to do something fun, that would captures people’s imagination and raise money for Lex’s
treatment.” Adele said
The Battle was born. Five tasks run through December, from a twitter campaign to being able to buy
coffee and cake treats loved by the characters in the books in ****.
Rebecca says “We’ll be out in Doncaster in fancy dress one week and book signing in Epworth the next,
to be honest we aren’t really sure what Charlotte Oatway has planned for us, but I’m sure it will be
fun.”
Charlotte and her father Steve agreed to get involved when they heard about the idea, not only did
Steve Oatway shoot the cover for Denial, he is a close friend to the Strong family.
Lex has a rare form of cancer, the treatment he has been recommended is still experimental and
therefore costly. All the people who know him speak of his courage and his determination to fight
against cancer. It is important that we as a community help him in his fight.
Follow the Battle’s fun on Facebook via http://www.facebook.com/groups/alexanderstrong.
You can buy the books at Amazon or order directly from Alexander’s page.

LOCAL MOLLY MAID
EXPLORES SUCCESS
MOLLY MAID, the UK’s leading professional
domestic cleaning company, has just returned from
their National Convention entitled “Exploring
Success” following an inspirational three days
where Andy & Lynne Crewe from MOLLY MAID,
Epworth, truly shone. This year, MOLLY MAID
turned The Abbey Hotel in Great Malvern,
Worcestershire with its impressive setting, into its
home for three days.
The Convention was concluded with a MOLLY
MAID star-studded Gala dinner and awards
ceremony where Andy and Lynne Crewe received
one of the top MOLLY MAID Awards. This award
was presented to them for their sustained efforts
in increasing the awareness of MOLLY MAID
locally and supporting the local community. The
increased awareness of the brand in their local
area resulting from their tireless marketing efforts
has led to the couple increasing sales enquiries for
the MOLLY MAID service. The growth of their
business and their readiness to take on every
marketing initiative has earned them the “MOLLY
MAID Golden Mop & Bucket Award”.
Andy and Lynne said, “MOLLY MAID is a strong
brand, which is why we started the business up locally.
We saw great opportunity to promote the brand as
effectively as possible and that is why we have
embraced as many new marketing initiatives as
possible. We also ensure that we provide a reliable
high quality service to our customers and it is thanks to
their loyalty and that of our staff that we are a success.

EPWORTH PRIMARY
SCHOOL NEWS
Harvest Festival
Last month we held our traditional Harvest Festival
in school. As usual children brought in lots of
harvest produce – fruit, vegetables, tins and dried
foods. This year our Harvest Festival Assembly was
presented by Year 1 children in class YJ.
Afterwards we made up over 60 Harvest parcels
that our Year 6 children distributed to Senior
Citizens in Epworth.
This is a very good link we have with the local
community and is a good way for our children to
show care for the older members of our
community.
Marvellous Maths Morning
We have just held another successful Maths
morning in school where parents come into classes
to see how we teach Maths in school now. It may
be different from Maths teaching years ago! We
have maths mornings every year and find they are
getting more popular every time we hold them.
This time around 70 parents joined us to watch the
maths lessons and to find out more about how
they can help the children at home with their
learning.
Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night certainly went off with a bang in
Epworth as our Friends fundraising group joined
the Showground and Epworth United to put on a
firework display. This was the third year in a row
we had put on the event and the display was the
biggest and best so far. A fun night enjoyed by all.
This is one of the Schools BIGGEST Fund
raising events, raising well over £1000 for
FOEs projects.

The Memorial Hall in Haxey. was the venue for the Epworth and
District’s Annual Open Meeting held on Monday,12th November and a large audience
eagerly anticipated an enjoyable evening.
Chairman Carolyn Drury welcomed all and introduced the demonstrator, June Borrowdale from
Worksop. June is a NAFAS Area Judge and a NAFAS Teacher and
was a member of the team involved in a display at this year’s Chelsea
Flower Show.
Her evening’s demonstration was entitled “Seasonal Sparkle” and as
we are a little early for the festive season, June used colours not
necessarily on a Christmas theme but she did include some baubles,
glitter and “bling”.
Her first arrangement was very much “Christmassy”, making use of a
Christmas card holder attached to a frame creating a tree shape
which she topped with a gold star. Gold sprayed palm leaves and
zebrin conifer leaves covered the container base into which she then placed Dolomite roses, large white
Anastasia chrysanthemums and white lisianthus. A very striking and easy? arrangement!
For her next display, which June titled Gothic Windows, she
produced a trough shaped container with six very tall leaves
arranged to form the window shape. Into the oasis in the base
June then inserted five short rose stalks which supported five
beautiful Red Lion amaryllis. The lower part of the
arrangement was filled with blue spruce, aspidistra leaves split
and looped, heather leaf fern and gomphrena which gave some
further interest.
As she worked during the evening June entertained us with
anecdotes about the Area NAFAS Chelsea display on the
theme of Monet. Her commentary during her final two
arrangements amused us and informed us of the amount of hard work but also the fun and enjoyment of
the experience.
Finally June demonstrated a large wreath intertwined with artificial ivy, star shaped baubles and spheres.
To this she introduced elaeagnus and then Marie Claire roses and very pretty toning deep peach
carnations. This created quite a stunning finale.
Appreciative thanks were expressed by Carolyn Drury and also St Lawrence Flower Group who always
attend our open meeting, before the raffle was drawn for several lucky winners.
The next meeting will be in the usual location, Stephen Jones Memorial Hall, Haxey on Monday, 10th
December and members were asked to bring some savoury or sweet delicacy and a drink.

Five Isle' residents took
part in the recent Lake
Garda International
Marathon Festival in Italy
and returned with some
great performances.
The event features a full marathon,
30km run and 15km run which runs
along roads adjacent to the pictur-
esque lake. The route also takes the
runners through mountainside tunnels
and vineyards. Julian Moorhouse,
owner of Epworth based running
speciality store Metres to Miles, Phillip Woolgar of Epworth and Christopher Payne of Haxey, each ran
the 26.2 miles marathon. Julian finished a creditable 3rd postion overall in a time of 2 hours 39 Minutes
and 17 seconds. Christopher was next across the line in 56th position posting a time of 3 hours 10 min-
utes 52 seconds and Phillip finished with a massive personal best time in 79th position with 3 hours 18
minutes 02 seconds. These were great performances in a field of more than 2500 across the three events.
Julian said "It was a fabulous event, set in wonderful surroundings and the support enroute was a great
help. I was pleased with the run as these days I'm more familiar with organising events than taking part in
them and so I was keen to go and be as competitive as I could be and at the sime time play things safe. I
took away a prize of 500 Euro, a cup, huge bottle of champagne and a crate of apples - yes apples, cour-
tesy of the local sponsors".
Chistopher, who has only run in a handful of
events before said "I'm delighted with the perform-
ance. A group of us train regularly several times
each week from Metres to Miles and putting in the
miles helped to get me round. I'm pleased with my
debut at the distance. I may look to run the Jungfrau
Marathon over the mountains of Switzerland next
year".
Phillip ran his fourth marathon in as many years and
ran a huge personal best, he said "My target was to
run 7.30 pace per mile but I felt great and managed
to take a huge chunk off my previous best. I've
trained very well and felt prepared for the race. Con-
fidence in the marathon, that you can do the distance
and feel comfortable at your target pace is so impor-
tant. I'm planning on doing an Ironman triathlon next
year, but not quite sure on the venue right now".
In the 15km run, which took in the final and
most challenging section of the marathon circuit Kim
Woolgar and Tracey Payne fought the gradients to
finish well up the field of finishers, crossing the finish
line together in 1 hour 34 minutes 01 second.

Every year, prepare your vehicle for winter. Have your antifreeze checked, replace damaged wiper blades,
stock-up on de-icer and screenwash. Buy a scraper and two cloths, one to clear condensation off the
inside of your windscreen and one to clean your lights and exterior glass. Drivers of older cars may also
consider buying a can of moisture-dispersant like WD 40. This is designed to keep spark plugs and dis-
tributors functioning properly.
Many new cars have built-in external temperature gauges. Use them as an early-warning system to assess
driving conditions. An indication temperature of 3°C or below means extremely slippery conditions
are possible.
Adjust your driving to the constantly changing conditions and always drive within your own and your car’s
limits. Observe other road users to see how they react to the conditions ahead. Alter your driving style
accordingly. Stopping distances can increase dramatically in winter. Stay focused, look further ahead for
potential hazards and ensure that you are far enough behind the car in front to stop comfortably if it
brakes.
Driving long distances in bad weather can be tiring. Poor visibility and the mesmeric effect of windscreen
wipers can take their toll. Stop for a break at least every two hours.
In low-traction conditions, stay in the highest gear possible as it minimises wheelspin.
Consider setting off in second gear, releasing the clutch and accelerating gently.
Always aim to stay on snow-ploughed and gritted carriageways. Overtaking manoeuvres on a snowy fast-
lane are incredibly dangerous.
If a driver tailgates you in wintry conditions, be prepared to pull over and let them pass. You may also
consider helping them out of the hedge, some way down the road.
In freezing conditions make an effort to drive more
smoothly than ever. Clutch, acceleration and steer-
ing movements should be smooth and progressive
and braking should be done early and gently.
Bridges are particularly prone to icing up. They
freeze first, thaw last, and are often lined with con-
crete pillars that don’t mix well with vehicle paint
and bodywork! The worst freezing usually takes
place at night and in the early hours.
Black ice is almost invisible and it reduces a car’s grip
to zero. If you hit black ice there is little you can do
to control a car. However, as it usually appears in
patches, you should be prepared for the moment
when your car regains grip. If you lose grip at the
front end, a front-wheel skid (understeer) will begin.
Take your foot off the accelerator, consider disen-
gaging the clutch and steer smoothly.
If your car goes into a rear-wheel skid, the tail of the
car will swing out sideways (oversteer) and may
cause a spin if you don’t correct it quickly. To con-
trol the skid, lift off the accelerator, consider de-
clutching and steer in the direction of the skid – so
that the wheels continue to point in the direction
you intended to travel.
