3GPP EPS/LTE Overview

EPS (Evolved Packet System) is the standardized name and LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the trade name of the development work in 3GPP to satisfy the future vision of UMTS: higher bit rates, band-width efficiency and flexibility, as well as cost efficiency SAE/EPC (System Architecture Evolution/Evolved Packet Core).The course covers EPS/LTE architecture focused in the main functions of the Access and Core parts, basic concepts to understand the new usage of the radio resources, and the protocol stacks of the Control Plane and the User Plane in the main interfaces. The course ends with an example of a basic traffic case.

EPS, Evolved Packet System, it is the standardized name and LTE, Long Term Evolution, is the trade name of the development work in 3GPP to satisfy the future vision of UMTS: higher bit rates, band-width efficiency and flexibility, as well as cost efficiency SAE/EPC (System Architecture Evolution/Evolved Packet Core. The course covers the UMTS-LTE/SAE architecture with main focus on LTE (evolved UTRAN, E-UTRAN). The downlink and uplink frame structure of E-UTRA is studied in detail. Also the Physical Layer, including OFDM and DFT-spread OFDM (SC-FDMA), the Layer 2 MAC protocol, scheduling, resource management and HARQ. The protocol RLC with ARQ, and PDCP protocol handling ciphering with the Layer 3 RRC and NAS protocols are studied too. The interoperability with other 3G UTRAN is covered, as well as the comparison with future 4G technologies.

3GPP EPS/LTE Access(Focused Module)

This one day course covers the area of EPS Access as is specified in 3GPP Release 8. The course focuses on the Air Interface including functions and procedures. The starting point is the Physical Layer processing and procedures, reaching the mapping of the Physical Channels and Signals onto the Radio Resources in detail, and going through the downlink in MIMO, the X2 Protocol and its procedures, and the SON solution (Self Organizing Network). Also the NAS Protocol and procedures, with EMM and ESM, and security are included. The course ends with a handover traffic case.

3GPP EPS Core Architecture(Focused Module)

This course will give a good understanding of the EPS Core area as specified in 3GPP Release 8.The course studies the Core interfaces including functions and procedures. Starting with S1, S5/S8, S11, S10 as well as S6a, where the focus is on the upper layer protocols. The interfaces towards PCRF and AF, Gx and Rx+ are also covered, and general principles of SIP and IMS are also parts of the course. The functions of the S3, S4 and S12 interfaces are explained too. The authentication and security in the network are included, as well as the Offline and Online Charging platforms and functions. The Tracking Area Update is covered with a traffic case.

Product Information

TheSpecTool is an on-line support tool for engineers working with the LTE/EPS specifications. It is vendor neutral, explaining the EPS/LTE specifications as defined by 3GPP only.

Pre-requisites:

The engineers must have a good understanding of the basic procedures and signaling of the LTE/EPS system to experience the full value of the tool.

Basic LTE competence for engineers new to LTE/EPS, please consider the traditional and e-learning courses from Greenlight/ aWaves offered in the “EPS/LTE Training Program” . TheSpecTool is the last fifth step for the advanced engineer.

Technical Requirements:

A web browser with the capability to read flash files. (iPad does not support Flash )

Complexity of TheSpecTool:

The tool requirements was captured from participants, who just passed a LTE advanced signaling course; as a consequence, most of the content in TheSpecTool goes deeper than traditional courses.

How to work with the tool:

TheSpecTool is a new and effective way to get an understanding of the LTE specifications in shorter time for engineers with basic LTE skills.

It is NOT a traditional e-learning tool with assessments, tests and diploma, it is just the facts presented with over 300 easy to understand educational technical illustrations and animations!
