What Our Customers Have to Say

“I use Epsilon extensometers because they arerugged, well built and economical. I find theirversatility to be their most appealing aspect. We

interface them with several dataacquisition systems as well astesting machines. We use themin traditional testing modes tonon-traditional, stand aloneapplications. It’s the versatilityof these instruments that makesEpsilon extensometers a perfectfit for our test laboratory.”

RICK PEARSONANDERSON LABORATORIES, INC.

“Epsilon’s products, technical support and service on repairs are very easy. We have never beforeexperienced such a well organized company. Weare in Austria, but it is much faster and easier tobuy high temp extensometers via the US insteadof from nearer European companies! Thetechnical support is very good, since everyquestion is answered in less than 24 hours!Other companies take weeks to answer – if theyanswer at all.”

“ . . . I have been doing testing for over 15 yearsand have used Epsilon extensometers for more

than seven years (3542 series).Your extensometers representthe best value for their cost inthe industry. . . . Since, we can “leave” theextensometer until break inmost applications (because ofthe robust design), we can getinvaluable information on thematerial evaluated.… The response time in gettinga new unit is by far the shortestin the industry.”

BRUNO BELANGERPresident and CEOBCOMTESTING, INC.

“At Laborator Dinamic we are using your Epsilon Extensometers for modern-izing different kinds of Universal Testing Machines or on new machines.. . . I really appreciate your product’s simple and clever embedding solutions with

high quality and technical performances.

JOHN DINALABORATOR DINAMIC, ROMANIA

“… With the fastest repairs completed in less thantwo weeks (from the moment it was dispatchedoverseas from our factory to the moment it wasreceived again). Our previous extensometersupplier never managed a turnaround in less thaneight weeks. For a front line piece of equipmentthat is entirely unacceptable.”

Compatibility

Interfacing

Epsilon extensometers are

compatible with nearly any brand

of materials testing equipment.

All the extensometers listed in this catalog can beprovided with the mating connector for your electronicsalready installed. We stock connectors for every commonbrand of test machine.

The majority of Epsilon Technology’s extensometers arestrain gaged transducers that employ a full Wheatstonebridge design and may be connected to most brands ofmaterials testing controls. If your controls have the signalconditioning module for a strain gaged sensor, we cansupply the unit with the necessary connector to plugdirectly in. If you are using a data acquisition board toacquire test data, the extensometer can almost always beinterfaced properly.

The shunt calibration module (available as an option withstrain gaged extensometers) makes calibrating theelectronics for the extensometer quick and easy. Pleasesee page 96 for more information.

A select few of our extensometers use technology otherthan strain gaged flexures. For these units, the requiredsignal conditioning electronics are provided.

For situations where no compatible signal conditioningelectronics are available, we can provide the electronics towork with our extensometers. The output from theelectronics can be easily connected to an external PC witha data acquisition board, chart recorder, or X-Y plotter. This is ideal for older test machines that may not have anyextensometer electronics available.

High accuracy and resolution, exceeding the requirements of ASTM E83 and ISO 9513All extensometers in this catalog provide very high accuracy, withperformance significantly better than required by the variousstandards organizations. For ASTM E83, nearly all units will meetclass B-1 and the remainder will meet class B-2. For ISO 9513,Epsilon’s extensometers meet class 0,5. Many extensometersregularly achieve a linearity better than 0.1% when calibrated.

The strain gage based extensometers are passive devices whoseresolution depends on the signal conditioning electronics with whichthey are used. With modern electronics, most models are typicallyable to resolve 1/10000 to 1/40000 of full scale measuring range.

All units ship with a certificate of accuracy, traceable to NIST. Eachunit is individually calibrated, with relevant data provided on thecalibration sheet. If neither signal conditioning electronics nor theshunt calibration module is purchased with the extensometer, theextensometer must be calibrated with the electronics for which it isintended to be used. Connectors with built-in shunt calibration maybe calibrated at Epsilon.

Highest quality and the best valueEpsilon Technology’s extensometers were engineered for highperformance during even the most demanding materials testingapplications. They have the ruggedness needed for high volumetesting labs, proven through years of customer use.

Epsilon’s extensometers are sold factory direct. This, coupled withour innovative design, results in substantial cost savings to yourcompany for world class products.

Robust design for rugged extensometersNearly all models use a dual flexure design that protects theextensometer from undesired motions. This also isolates thesensing element from side forces and accelerations from dynamictests. Unseen errors are virtually eliminated.

Integral mechanical stops protect the extensometer from damagewhen specimen failure occurs. Stops also prevent damage frommishandling.

All models may be left on through test sample failure

to test equipment.

Strain gaged transducers (load cells, extensometers, etc.) normallyemploy a full Wheatstone bridge design. They are excited by avoltage, typically 5 or 10 VDC. The output from the device isproportional to the excitation. For this reason, the calibrated outputis often express as a value such as 2.345 mV/V. This means theoutput at full scale will be 23.450 millivolts if the excitation is exactly10 volts. The output of the unit is provided by Epsilon on thecalibration certificate.

All strain gaged sensors must be connected to some externalelectronics to provide readings. The electronics provides theexcitation, and normally amplifies the output to a high level DCvoltage. This resultant voltage is used for readout or control of thetest machine. In newer digital systems, the voltage output isconverted via data acquisition hardware into engineering units ofstrain. In instances where a chart recorder or X-Y recorder is used, the output is set to easily yield a specified strain/cm on the graph.

When a new device such as an extensometer is first used, it mustbe calibrated with the electronics it is to be connected to. This canbe achieved in a variety of ways.

By a calibration service such as the equipmentmanufacturer or independent calibration serviceIf the extensometer is connected to an available channel on anexisting test controller, the extensometer is typically supplied withthe correct connector for the system. Epsilon extensometers can becalibrated with the test controls by any calibration service with thecapability of calibrating extensometers. Many customers have theirentire test machine re-calibrated annually by the service depart-ment of the manufacturer. This includes the load cell, extensometersand any other sensors. Any competent service will have no difficultycalibrating standard extensometers supplied by Epsilon Technology.

Using Epsilon Shunt Calibration ModuleThis is a very quick and easy way to set your electronics, regard-less of brand. The two points needed for the calibration areprovided on the calibration certificate. Please see page 96 for moreinformation on the operation of the shunt calibration module.

With electronics from EpsilonAll extensometers purchased with electronics from EpsilonTechnology are shipped as fully calibrated systems. The outputfrom the units is set to exact values, and is noted on the calibrationcertificate. No further calibration is required. Periodic re-calibrationcan be performed by sending the units back to Epsilon Technology.

With an extensometer calibrator from EpsilonEpsilon’s Model 3590 Digital Electronic Calibrator is the easiest touse unit available. This is an ideal way to perform calibrations if youhave many extensometers and wish to calibrate your own. Theyallow you to check many data points along the curve for the highestaccuracy. Periodic re-calibration of the calibrator can be performedby a third party calibration service or by sending the unit back toEpsilon Technology.

Very small and rugged, yet ultra-light weight, these

units are widely used for testing small and delicate

samples. Ideal for many biomedical tests, as well as

for wire and thin sheet materials. Also great for low

cycle fatigue testing where short samples are used.

Weighing as little as 8 grams, these tiny extensometers alsohave very low operating force, resulting in low specimencontact force and influence. All use an Epsilon proprietarydual flexure design, which makes them very rugged for theirsize. Most are only 0.6 inches tall (15.25 mm). These exten-someters will fit in the small space between grips, whichusually results when small test samples are used.

The Model 3442 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed forstrain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to atest machine controller. The signal conditioning electronicsfor the extensometer is typically included with the testmachine controller or may often be added. In this case theextensometer is shipped with the proper connector andwiring to plug directly into the electronics. For systemslacking the required electronics, Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing the extensometer output to beconnected to data acquisition boards, chart recorders or otherequipment. See the electronics section of this catalog foravailable signal conditioners and strain meters.

Long gage length extensometers with gage lengths

greater than 2 inches (50 mm) for tensile and

compression testing. These units have been specially

designed for long gage length applications where low

level strain measurements are required.

The dual flexure design makes the 3542L very rugged andinsensitive to vibrations. These extensometers are designedfor testing a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, composites and ceramics. Epsilon’s Model 3543 isrecommended for applications requiring long gage lengthsand larger measuring ranges.

The Model 3542L comes standard with Epsilon’s quickattach kit, making it easy to mount the extensometer on thetest specimen. The quick attach kit can be removed, allowingmounting of the extensometer with springs or rubber bands.

The 3542L extensometers are strain gaged devices, makingthem compatible with any electronics designed for straingaged transducers. Most often they are connected to a testmachine controller. The signal conditioning electronics forthe extensometer is typically included with the test machinecontroller or may often be added. In this case the extenso-meter is shipped with the proper connector and wiring toplug directly into the electronics. For systems lacking therequired electronics, Epsilon can provide a variety of solu-tions, allowing the extensometer output to be connected todata acquisition boards, chart recorders or other equipment.See the electronics section of this catalog for available signalconditioners.

This model is available in gage lengths from 2 inches (50 mm)

and larger, with measuring ranges up to 4 inches (100 mm).

It is a uniquely designed unit that may be left on through

specimen failure. These extensometers are widely used

where long samples are required. They are ideal for testing

steel re-bar, weld joints, and wire materials.

The unique pull-apart design protects the extensometer whenthe specimen fails. These are tension only units. Duringoperation, the upper half of the extensometer pulls out of themain body. Tapered measuring beams activate strain gagedflexures within the unit. This unique design allows longmeasuring ranges, yet retains the compatibility withelectronics for strain gaged transducers. These models offerhigh accuracy and are light weight but rugged, with lowoperating force.

The units have hardened tool steel knife edges. Standardquick attach wires provided with the extensometer work on flat specimens up to 0.5 x 1.25 inch (12 x 31 mm) and onrounds up to 1 inch (25 mm) diameter. Optional quick attachkit wire forms are available for use on larger samples. SeeModel 3542L for long gage lengths with smaller measuringranges.

3800 WITH 1” OR 25 MM GAGE LENGTH

3800 WITH 2” OR 50 MM GAGE LENGTH

Designed for plastics, rubber and elastomer testing,

these extensometers have very long measuring ranges.

Their unique design allows testing to failure and

minimizes interaction with the sample.

The main body of this unique extensometer remainsstationary during testing, held in position by the adjustablemagnetic base included. Only the very light, small travelingheads move as the sample elongates during a test. Theseattach to the sample with small spring clips. Each head pullsa cord out from the extensometer as the head moves.

These models use high precision, low friction potentio-meters, and, as a result, have a wide range of factoryselectable outputs. The extensometer is driven by an excita-tion voltage and has output proportional to the input. Theycan be provided with high level outputs (approximately 2-8VDC) or ones that mimic strain gaged devices (2-4 mV/V).When set to mimic strain gaged extensometers, the Model3800 can be used with virtually any signal conditioningelectronics designed for strain gaged sensors. The potentio-meters employ a hybrid wire wound around conductiveplastic, which provides infinite resolution and excellent longterm stability. The output from the extensometer is readilyinterfaced with most existing test controllers, and may bedirectly input to data acquisition systems and chart recorders. Please let us know at the time of order what type of outputand connector you require.

Designed for use with furnaces and induction heating

systems, these extensometers use Epsilon’s exclusive

self-supporting design. A wide range of options cover

most testing applications.

Epsilon has developed a very unique high temperatureextensometer for testing metals, ceramics and composites atthe high temperatures produced by furnaces and inductionheating systems. A combination of new features make theseextensometers easier to use and better in performance thanother high temperature extensometers.

The units are held on the specimen by light, flexible cera-mic fiber cords. These make the extensometer self-supportingon the specimen. No furnace mounting brackets are required. The side load on the test sample is mostly eliminated becauseof the self-supporting design and light weight of the sensor. Most materials testing furnaces with a side cut-out for anextensometer will readily accept a Model 3448. For inductionheating systems, a different ceramic cord placement allowsthe extensometer to easily pass between the coils.

The combination of radiant heat shields and convectioncooling fins allow this model to be used at specimen temper-atures up to 1200 °C (2200 °F) without any cooling. Anoptional tiny air fan does enhance stability at the highesttemperatures and is recommended for the highest accuracyand for tests with small elongations. The fan comes with amagnetic base for support so it can be mounted at any con-venient location near the extensometer. Fan cooling is notgenerally needed for induction heated systems.

High purity alumina (min 99.7%) ceramic rods are used. These are available in lengths as required to fit your furnace.A spare set is included with every extensometer. Specifychisel, vee chisel or conical contact points as desired. Seepage 97 for the benefits of each.

Most units operate equally well in tension and compres-sion. Thus tensile, compression and cyclic tests like low cyclefatigue can all be performed with a single unit.

tensile, compression and cyclic testing in a tempera-

ture range of -195 °C to 300 °C (-321 °F to 572 °F).

These extensometers are semi-custom units built to

the customer’s specifications.

These air-cooled extensometers are for testing a wide rangeof materials, including metals, plastics, composites andceramics. All will work in both tension and compression. Thedual flexure design makes them very rugged and insensitiveto vibrations and permits higher frequency operation. Theseunits are air-cooled for elevated temperature use. A supply ofdry air or inert gas must be available at approximately 2-2.75bars (30-40 psi). For low temperature testing, no cooling is used.

MODEL 3475-xxxx-xxMiniature Transverse Extensometer

EpsilonTechnology Corp

Contact Epsilon for your special testing requirements.

A miniature extensometer designed for general purpose

transverse or diametral strain measurements on small

or thin specimens. May be used simultaneously with

the Model 3442 miniature axial extensometers or the

Model 3542 axial extensometers.

These very lightweight extensometers are self-supporting onthe test sample. They are used for measuring the transverseor diametral strain. Often they are used simultaneously withan Epsilon axial strain measuring extensometer to determinePoisson’s ratio. They also are used for characterizing materialswith anisotropic properties, such as with many compositematerials.

This model clips easily onto the sample with an integralspring to hold the unit in place. It can be adjusted to work onany size sample from 0 to 1 inch (25 mm) width or diameter. The Model 3475 has an arm thickness of only 0.15 inches (3.81mm), and will work simultaneously with any axial extensometerhaving sufficient clearance between arms (not all versions ofthe 3442 miniature extensometer can be used). Large radiuscontacts prevent the unit from digging into the samples. Thismodel utilizes Epsilon’s dual flexure design, allowing use indynamic applications. All units have measuring ranges in bothdirections.

The Model 3475 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed forstrain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to atest machine controller. The signal conditioning electronicsfor the extensometer is typically included with the testmachine controller or may often be added. Designed for general purpose transverse or diametral

strain measurement on axially loaded specimens. This

model may be used simultaneously with the Model

3542 axial extensometer.

Self-supporting on the test sample, these extensometers willwork on any width or diameter specimen from 0 to 1 inch (25 mm). They are commonly used for measurement ofPoisson’s ratio, for transverse measurements with anisotropicmaterials like many composites and for sheet metal testingsuch as r-value determination. Most often they are usedsimultaneously with Epsilon’s axial extensometers.

These units easily clip onto the sample, held in place withan integral spring. Rounded contact edges maintain theposition on the specimen. All are high accuracy strain gagedunits, compatible with most test controllers.

Designed for measuring r-values in sheet metal testing,

this extensometer averages the lateral strain at two

locations. This model may be used simultaneously with

the Model 3542 axial extensometer.

This extensometer is self-supporting on the sample. It hasrounded contact edges which measure the sample at twolocations. As the test sample is pulled, the contact edgesfollow the part of the sample they were mounted on,measuring lateral strain on the sample at the same locationthroughout the test. The extensometer has a single output, which is the average of the two lateral measurements.

These extensometers are used with a 2 inch or 50 mmgage length Model 3542 extensometer, which measures theaxial strain.

The Model 3575AVG extensometers are strain gageddevices, making them compatible with any electronicsdesigned for strain gaged transducers. Most often they areconnected to a test machine controller. The signalconditioning electronics for the extensometer is typicallyincluded with the test machine controller or may often beadded. In this case the extensometer is shipped with theproper connector and wiring to plug directly into theelectronics. For systems lacking the required electronics,Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing theextensometer output to be connected to data acquisitionboards, chart recorders or other equipment. The 3675 extensometer may be used simultaneously with

Epsilon’s Model 3555 axial extensometer.

These high accuracy gages are designed for testing atelevated temperatures, much higher than strain gaged basedextensometers. The Model 3675 uses a high temperaturecapacitive sensor and can operate without any cooling at theupper temperature limit of most environmental chambersused in materials testing.

Most often these extensometers are used simultaneouslywith the Model 3555 axial extensometer for measuringPoisson’s ratio or materials characterization for anisotropicmaterials like many composites. These units clip easily ontotest specimens. A high temperature nickel alloy spring is usedto create the force to hold the self-supporting extensometerin place on the sample. It can be used on samples up to 1inch (25 mm) in width or diameter.

These transverse units are supplied with the Model 3603signal conditioning electronics. The extensometer andelectronics are factory calibrated. The analog output voltageis typically calibrated for 0 to 10 VDC (other ranges areavailable on request). This can be used directly by dataacquisition systems. For fracture mechanics studies, these gages are in

compliance with standardized test methods, such as

ASTM E1820 for determination of fracture toughness

properties of metallic materials.

These gages conform to the requirements of ASTM E399 forfracture toughness and E1820 and E813 for JIC and R-curvedetermination. In addition, the modified groove designcomplies with E1820 tests where greater stability and accur-acy results from the sharper groove root. Clip-on gages areused for a variety of fracture mechanics tests, includingcompact tension, arc shaped, disk shaped, bend specimens orother specimen geometries in compliance with ASTM andother standards organization’s test methods. Designed for fracture mechanics tests in environmental

chambers where the entire gage must be exposed to

the heat. These capacitive sensor based clip-on gages

(or COD gages) may be used up to 540 °C (1000 °F)

without any cooling.

These gages are designed for testing at elevated temper-atures, much higher than strain gage based clip-on designs. They can be used for several standardized fracture testmethods, including ASTM E399 for fracture toughness orE1820 and E813 for JIC and R-curve determination. TheModel 3641 uses a high temperature capacitive sensor andcan operate without any cooling at the upper temperaturelimit of most environmental chambers used in materialstesting.

High temperature nickel alloy springs are used to createthe force to hold the gage in place on the knife edge contacts.Stiff arms with a flexure design at the rear eliminatespotential problems of high temperature creep experiencedwith other designs.

The clip-on gages are supplied with the Model 3603 signalconditioning electronics. The gage and electronics are factorycalibrated. The analog output voltage is typically calibrated for0 to 10 VDC (other ranges are available on request). This canbe used directly by data acquisition systems. It usually can berouted to a DC input channel on most test machine con-trollers as well.

Air-cooled clip-on gage designed for fracture mechanics

testing in a temperature range of -195 °C to 300 °C (-321 °F

to 572 °F). These extensometers are semi-custom units built

to the customer’s specifications.

These air-cooled clip-on gages conform to the requirementsof ASTM E399 for fracture toughness and E1820 and E813for JIC and R-curve determination. In addition, the modifiedgroove design complies with E1820 tests where greaterstability and accuracy results from the sharper groove root.Clip-on gages are used for a variety of fracture mechanicstesting, using compact tension, arc shaped, disk shaped, bend specimens or other specimen geometries in compliancewith ASTM and other standards organization’s test methods. These units are air-cooled for elevated temperature use. Asupply of dry air or inert gas must be available at approxi-mately 2-2.75 bars (30-40 psi). For low temperature testing,no cooling is used.

The Model 3741 clip-on gages are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed forstrain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to atest machine controller. The signal conditioning electronicsfor the extensometer is usually present or may often beadded. In this case the extensometer is shipped with theproper connector and wiring to directly plug into theelectronics. For systems lacking the required electronics,Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing theextensometer output to be connected to data acquisitionboards, chart recorders or other equipment. The Model 3542RA may beused simultaneously with theModel 3544 circumferentialextensometers (shown) or the Model 3975 diametralextensometers.

Designed for compressive strength tests on rock, concrete

and other large compression samples, the 3542RA measures

axial strain on opposite sides of the test specimen, and the

output is an average of the two readings. Gage lengths from

1 to 8 inches (25 to 200 mm) and measuring ranges from

.050 to .250 inches (1.2 to 6 mm) are available.

The Model 3542RA is available in a variety of configurations. All are self-supporting on the specimen and mount veryeasily. For tests where a single diameter specimen is typicallyused, the fixed diameter Model 3542RA1 is recommended. For applications where a continuously adjustable diameterextensometer is required, the Model 3542RA2 is available. Ifdesired, the two readings can be independent, providing twooutputs. Many rock tests are done in tri-axial pressure vessels.Epsilon has versions for use in oil to 1360 bar at 200 °C(20,000 psi at 400 °F). These will fit in unusually small insidediameter vessels. For small diameter specimens, we suggestthe Model 3442RA1 averaging axial extensometer.

All Model 3542RA extensometers are designed so theymay be used together with the Model 3544 circumferential or3975 diametral extensometer. Epsilon’s rock extensometerscan withstand the punishment of daily, high volume testing. Some units have been used for several thousand tests withoutdamage. Designed for concrete and rock compression testing

or for compression tests on other large samples. The

Model 3544 may be used simultaneously with the

Model 3542RA axial extensometers.

Circumferential extensometers measure the change in cir-cumference as the sample is compressed. This is consideredby many researchers to be a more accurate way to determinediametral strain, since the measurement is taken over theentire material inside the circumference.

A high precision custom roller chain with special rollersmounts the extensometer to the specimen. As the specimendiameter enlarges during the test, the chain causes the exten-someter to expand. The unit is self-supported on the samplewith integral springs. Links are easily added or removed toadjust for different size specimens. A mechanical adjustmentallows the output to be set to zero. A breakaway deviceprotects the extensometer in the event of specimen rupture.

Often rock specimens are tested in tri-axial pressure cells.Versions of the Model 3544 are available to fit inside thevessel and operate in oil environments at up to 1360 bar at200 °C (20,000 psi at 400 °F). These units were designed tofit inside small inner diameter vessels.

The Model 3544 is the best choice for large diametralstrains in large compression samples. Epsilon’s diametralrock and concrete extensometer, the Model 3975, is recom-mended for small strain measurements.

This model was designed for measuring axial

displacements in the simple performance tests

prescribed by NCHRP Report 465.

These extensometers come as two axial modules withindependent outputs capable of measuring specimen deform-ations in two locations. They clip quickly onto gage pointsmounted per the test requirements. Two, three or fourmodules can be mounted on the test specimen.

Magnets at each end of the extensometer snap instantly inplace on the steel gage points glued to the test sample. Thequick attachment is most advantageous when testing pre-conditioned samples that are heated or cooled, since theextensometers can be mounted before the sample changestemperature appreciably. For units intended to be used insidetriaxial cells, extensometers are available with modulesrotated 90° (not shown).

The standard Model 3909 has full scale travel of 0.020inches (0.5 mm). Gage points are included with the extenso-meters and optional gluing fixtures are available. The standardversion of this model can be converted to the Model 3910with optional gage length adapters.

This model meets many of the needs for testing

asphalt core samples, in 4 and 6 inch diameters.

The unit meets test method requirements for strain

measurement developed under the U.S. Federal

Highways SHRP program.

These extensometers are for creep compliance, tensilestrength testing and dynamic resilient modulus testing. Theyare single integral, bi-axial units which measure both lateraland vertical deformations. They clip quickly onto gage pointsmounted per the test requirements. They mount much fasterand easier than other types.

Two units are typically required, with one extensometermounting to each side of the test specimen. They arechangeable from the 1 inch centers used for 4 inch diameterspecimens, to the 1.5 inch centers used for 6 inch diametersamples using optional gage length adapters. Magnets at eachend of the extensometer snap instantly in place on the steelgage points glued to the test sample. The quick attachment ismost advantageous when testing pre-conditioned samplesthat are heated or cooled, since the extensometers can bemounted before the sample changes temperature appreciably.

The standard Model 3910 has full scale measuring rangeof 0.020 inches (0.5 mm). Gage points are included with theextensometers and optional gluing templates are available. This model can be converted to the Model 3909 with optionalgage length adapters.

For indirect tensile testing, such as for resilient modulus, these extensometers measure the lateral deformation ofspecimens. They are self-supporting on the sample and clipon in seconds. The traditional way this deformation has beenmeasured was prone to errors caused by slight rocking of thesample as it is loaded. The self-supporting design of theModel 3911 eliminates this problem. This unit will handle thedynamic pulse requirements of resilient modulus testing.

The speed of mounting makes test set-up much faster thanwith the older method. The pivot mounting used ensures thatthe specimen contact pads meet the often uneven asphaltsurface as well as possible. The measuring range of 0.050inches allows a wide range of testing, yet can easily measurethe sometimes very small displacements required.

The Model 3911 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed forstrain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to atest machine controller. This extensometer was designed for accurate measure-

ment of small diametral strains such as those required

to determine Poisson’s ratio of rock, concrete and

asphalt samples. The units are designed to be used in

conjunction with the Model 3542RA axial averaging

extensometer.

Self-supporting on the test sample, these extensometers will work on standard sized diameter samples, but specialconfigurations are available upon request. They are designedfor use in testing for Poisson’s ratio and for applicationswhere accurate diametral measurements with low strains arerequired.

The Model 3975 is the best choice for small diametralstrains in large compression samples. Epsilon’s circumfer-ential extensometer, the Model 3544, is recommended forlarge strain measurements. These units are easily attached tothe sample, and rounded contact edges maintain the positionon the specimen.

Widely used for measuring deformations in three and

four point bend tests, on compression tests and for a

variety of general purpose deformations. These strain

gaged devices come with a magnetic base for easy

mounting.

Deflection is measured with a single arm with an attachedspherical contact tip, similar to those on a dial indicator. Thefull bridge strain gaged construction provides an electricaloutput compatible with any electronics designed for a straingaged transducer.

The magnetic base furnished with the gage can bemounted to the desired reference surface, whether flat orround. The tip can then be positioned to measure the defor-mation encountered during the test. The magnetic base canonly be used for low and standard temperature testing.Elevated temperature testing requires additional supportconsiderations.

All models feature a spring loaded arm that can break freein the event of excessive displacement, protecting the gagefrom damage. The upper arm exerts a small spring forceagainst the specimen, which is sufficient to allow dynamiccyclic testing if desired, yet light enough in force to avoidinfluence on the test.

These units come standard with the arm set to measuredownward deflections when oriented in the upright position. They can be used upside down or in any orientation. Theymay also be configured with the extensometer arm springloaded downward. Specify this if desired. Note that themeasuring ranges listed are total displacement.

Designed for simultaneously measuring axial and

torsional deflections on specimens tested in

axial/torsional machines.

The Model 3550 extensometer is most often used on roundspecimens tested in bi-axial test machines capable of simul-taneous axial and torsional loading. The extensometer is oftencustomized for particular applications. All units are capable ofbi-directional displacement, so they may be used for cyclictesting under fully reversed loading conditions. The standardsized model is self-supporting on the specimen, and works onspecimens from 0.375 to 1.000 inches (9.5 to 25.4 mm). Theincluded conical point contacts are made from tungstencarbide. Their unique design directly measures the surfaceshear strain angle, which allows operation on a wide range ofspecimen diameters without changing calibration.

All models are designed specifically to minimize crosstalkbetween axes and to provide high accuracy measurements. Allfeature the dual flexure design common to other Epsilonextensometers.

Available options cover temperature ranges from -265 °Cto 175 °C (the standard temperature range is -40 °C to 100 °C). Both inch and metric versions are available. Epsilon Technology’s axial/torsionalextensometer was designed to directlymeasure the shear strain, γ shown in thefigure. This design allows the correctdetermination of the shear strain withouthaving to know the radius of thespecimen being tested, R.

The shear strain is related to the angle oftwist (a commonly referenced parameterin torsion testing), φ, by the followingrelationship:

γ = R .

For extensometers that measure φ directlyinstead of γ, corrections need to be madefor every different specimen diametertested and for axial strain to correctlydetermine the shear strain.

The two examples to the left show thevariation of the angle of twist versus achange in specimen diameter relative tothe constant resulting shear strain.

MODEL 3560BIAX-xxxx-xxx-xxBi-Axial Extensometer

A single integral unit provides simultaneous lateral

(transverse) strain and averaged axial strain measure-

ment. The unit is also available as an averaged axial

extensometer alone.

This extensometer is ideally suited for testing anisotropicmaterials such as advanced composites as well as for generalpurpose tests like determining Poisson’s ratio. The Model3560-BIA uses a design unique to Epsilon, where the knifeedges remain parallel during the displacement. This approachgreatly reduces crosstalk between axes and allows use onround or flat specimens with equal ease. These extensometersare very easy to mount. Integral springs hold the unit on thetest sample. The parallel multiple flexure design makes theseunits very durable.

The Model 3560-AVG reads axial strain only, as a singleaveraged output. It may also be supplied with two indepen-dent outputs, one measurement from each side of thespecimen. This set-up is most commonly required when anindication of specimen bending is desired. The secondversion, the Model 3560-BIA, includes both the averagedaxial strain and the transverse strain. Again, this may also beconfigured as dual independent axial readings, which resultsin a three channel extensometer.

The Model 3560 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed forstrain gaged transducers.

This extensometer is a strain gaged unit with small measuringranges designed for performing proof load testing of boltsand similar applications such as yield measurements. TheModel 3565 uses hard conical points to contact the bolt at thecenter of the head and at the bottom. It is fully adjustable fordifferent length bolts ranging from 1 inch (25 mm) in lengthto 6 inches (150 mm) standard. Extension beams are availablefor longer bolts. The standard maximum measuring range is0.05 inches (1.25 mm). Generally, on longer bolts thisextensometer will be self-supported without requiring anycentering marks or punch marks on the bolt. For shorterbolts these marks may be required. If the conical pins aresharp, marks are often not needed even on the shortest bolts.

The extensometer has a zero adjustment screw to adjustthe length between the contact pins. This is used to set theoutput voltage to zero, which corresponds to the correctstarting position for the test. It also includes a breakawaylower arm. In the event a bolt should fail, the breakaway armsnaps free, helping to prevent damage to the extensometer. This is easily re-installed. In the event that bolt failures arelikely during a test, it is recommended the user attach a cordaround the upper part of the beam and tie the other end tothe test frame to prevent the extensometer from falling.

The included conical point contacts are made fromtungsten carbide.

A high accuracy, higher speed meter that allows multiple

calibrated ranges. Optionally, the DSM-Plus can be con-

figured with two channels to read force and strain. This is a

simple, low cost way to obtain the data for stress-strain

plots. The automatic recognition feature allows multiple

extensometers to be calibrated individually on one meter.

The DSM-Plus is ideal for customers who own severalextensometers. When a configured extensometer is pluggedin, the meter automatically recognizes it. It is also possible tocalibrate the same extensometer in multiple ranges. Forexample, it is frequently convenient to calibrate an extenso-meter to a range of 10% of the full scale measuring range toallow greater sensitivity for tests at small strains.

The dual channel version is very useful for tests whichrequire two strain readings, such as measurement of Poisson’sratio or r-value tests on sheet metal samples. It also is a lowcost solution to upgrading older test systems. One channel isused for strain and the other for the force reading from a loadcell. The RS232 digital output or the analog outputs makecomputerized data acquisition simple.

Calibration

96

The Shunt Calibration Module (SCM)

makes setting up your electronics with

Epsilon’s strain gaged extensometers

a quick and easy process.

Calibration requires only these two simple steps:1. Mount the extensometer on a sample. Adjust the output to read

zero. This sets point “1” on the example graph shown.2. Plug in the SCM. Adjust the output readings by adjusting the

gain or amplification to precisely the value indicated on theextensometer’s calibration sheet. This sets point “2” on theexample graph.

That’s all it takes. This process works for almost every combinationof extensometer and electronics, and it works even if the testcontrols have internal shunt capability. It is useful for digital systemsthat read strain directly, as well as for older systems and standalone signal conditioning electronics. For controls that only allow forone extensometer, it provides the ability to quickly switch from oneextensometer to another. For systems with multiple calibrationranges, as common in materials testing, multiple SCM’s may beordered for each of the ranges specified.

The extensometer and SCM may be returned to Epsilon Technologyfor periodic re-calibration.

Shunt CalibrationModule

What are they?

Shunt calibration is a common method of calibratingelectronics for use with strain gaged transducers. TheSCM provides a means of transferring Epsilon’s transducercalibration to the user’s electronics so the output readscorrectly. The SCM also provides a quick means to checkthat the electronics are properly set and have not shifted. The SCM is a resistor that connects across one arm of thesensor bridge, which when used causes the output of thesensor to shift. With a properly chosen resistor, the shiftedoutput will simulate an output whose value may beprecisely measured and reported. In order to set theelectronics properly, it must read zero when the extenso-meter is at zero. It must also have the proper amplification(gain) so that non-zero readings are correct.

The SCM works for any of Epsilon’s strain gagedextensometers and with nearly any electronics. As shownin the photo, the module is a simple plug-in devicecontaining the shunt resistor. It plugs into a miniatureconnector extending out the back of the extensometerconnector. When plugged in, it shunts across one arm ofthe sensor and shifts the output to a precise valuerecorded on the extensometer’s calibration certificate.

Option

Knife edges available for

Epsilon extensometers.

All of the following knife edges will fit all models of Epsilon

extensometers that use knife edges. The exceptions are

high temperature units that use ceramic rods, specialty

extensometers that require conical point contacts, asphalt

extensometers, clip-on gages and deflectometers.

Standard Knife EdgesPART NO. 350210-01

Produced from hardened tool steel, these knifeedges are used for a wide range of applications, and can be usedon both round and rectangular shaped specimens. These are thestandard knife edges supplied with most Epsilon extensometers.

Dual Bevel Knife EdgesPART NO. 350210V2-01

Produced from high toughness tool steel. Theseknife edges are used in applications where the standard knifeedges may experience excessive chipping, such as on very hardmetals. They are also ideal for high modulus composites. The dualbevel design and tougher material of construction provides agreater resistance to damage during testing. These knife edges arealso recommended for biomedical testing (especially bone) wherestability of the contact point can be compromised due to the soft-ness of the test specimen. The dual bevel edge prevents slightoutput shifts on the sample that can result from the standard knifeedges biting into the sample.

Ceramic Knife EdgesPART NO. 350210C2-01

These knife edges are typically used in low cyclefatigue applications on hard metals where metallic knife edgeswould likely experience undue wear. They are also used on thesubmersible Model 4030 extensometer to prevent galvaniccorrosion between the extensometer and the test specimen.

Hardened Stainless SteelPART NO. 350210-02

These knife edges are designed to be used inenvironments where additional strength and corrosion resistance isrequired. Primary applications are in biomedical testing where theknife edges may be exposed to saline solutions.

Three-Point Contact Knife EdgesPART NO. 354299

These knife edges are designed for use on flat specimens. Theyensure stable contact on flat test samples due to 3-point contact.

Extended Knife EdgesPART NO. 350210EXT-01

Knife edges for applications where the additional length isrequired, such as where the grips are very close together. Longerlengths are available on special order.

Rounded Knife EdgesPART NO. 350210-BLUNT

Knife edges designed for use on transverse extensometers and applications where blunt edges are required. These are primarily used on transverse or diametral extenso-meters, such as the 3575, 3575AVG and 3675.

Vee Knife EdgesPART NO. 352610-01

Designed for use on round specimens. Due to the contact pointvariation that can occur between specimens of different diam-eters, units with these knife edges must be calibrated with postsof equal diameter. On extensometers with longer arms, errorscreated by this variation are not so pronounced, but on units withshorter arms lengths, this must be taken into consideration. Theprimary advantage is self-centering on the test sample.

Ceramic Rods and TipsCeramic rods are made inwhatever length is required tofit the customer’s furnace ortest setup, provided theconfiguration is valid with the

gage length and measuring range requested. There arethree styles of rod tips available: straight chisel tips, veechisel tips, and conical point. Straight chisel tipped rodsare the standard style provided, and they can be used onboth flat and round specimens. Vee chisel tipped rods areused on round samples only, and the conical point rodsare primarily for rectangular test samples. A spare set ofrods of whichever style is selected by the customer isincluded with the extensometer.

Shown left to right are straight chisel, veechisel, conical point.
