Welcome to Term 3 - Semester 2. It is hard to believe half the year has passed already. It was lovely to be in the playground this morning, to chat with students as they arrived at school, eager to see friends and share holiday experiences. We look forward to a wonderful term of learning. Special welcome to our 9 new students and their families. We hope you enjoy your time as part of our school community.

Yesterday teachers undertook professional learning on the new Literacy and Numeracy progressions. Led by myself and the executive team (Miss Moore, Miss Gerard, Mr Buckman, Mr Johnston and Mrs Moran), we unpacked Strategic Direction 2 of our school plan and looked closely at the way the Numeracy progressions support the teaching of numeracy across the key learning areas. Teachers compared the new progressions to the previous continuum and collaboratively discussed how we will use the progressions to support student learning.

EXPERT LED PARENT INFORMATION SESSION- MINDSET. As advertised in our previous newsletter, we are holding an information session for parents on Mindset.

This session will be presented by a guest speaker- Tim Perkins. Here is Tim’s outline of his session:

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.- Alvin Toffler

Whether you subscribe to this point of view or not I don’t know, but what I do know is that every parent I work with wants the best for their offspring. Yet I often recognise that their best intentions are unwittingly undermining their child’s potential. As our society and the economy continue to evolve, school performance is important, but so too are an increasing array of other considerations. In this presentation, we’ll explore the research of Professor Carol Dweck and her theory of Fixed and Growth Mindsets. We’ll explore the behaviours to be aware of, those we could look to encourage as well as strategies to use in our day-to-day life to best prepare our kids to have the resilient mindset necessary to handle what life will have to throw at them.” - Tim Perkins

When: Wednesday 22 August 5:30p.m-6:30p.m

Where: School Hall.

This session is not suitable for children so please make child care arrangements.

For approximately 50 years generations of families in Sydney’s North Shore have entrusted Bush School Learn to Swim Not-For-Profit with the responsibility of developing swimming competency in their children. The Bush School Learn to Swim Not-For-Profit runs out of two heated in-ground pools on the Wahroonga Public

School site. It is run 100% by volunteers in the summer months from November each year. After the worst year of drownings on record in New South Wales in 2016/2017, Royal Life Saving put together this report (http://www.watersafety.nsw.gov.au/Documents/Publications/Reports-Current/NSW-Summer-Drowning-Report-2016-to-2017.PDF) and significant media attention was given to schools and the role that they play insupporting the development of swimming skills.Bush School Learn to Swim Not-Fot-Profit is not run by Wahroonga Public School. It is run by a community organisation founded from the desire to educate youth about water safety and provide the essential skills for survival as well as stroke development.Facts and details:• BSLTS operates each year from November to March with lessons taking place on Saturdays in the groundsof Wahroonga Public School• BSLTS fees are approximately one third the cost of other commercial learn to swim programs. Theaverage 30-minute lesson costs parents $5.00! This is the cheapest and most accessible instruction inSydney.• BSLTS is run by dedicated volunteers each possessing appropriate qualifications as swim instructors.• Visit the BSLTS website for more: http://www.bushschoollts.org
