In the Sainte-Chapelle, Paris, commissioned by King Louis IX in the 13th century to house his jewels and relics, restoration work on the stained glass windows has involved cleaning using lasers to measure the nanoparticles of copper or silver, for example, that give, respectively, the red or yellow colouring to the glass.
