Dear Rising Fourth Grade Parents, Summer 2019
Summer vacation is fast-approaching, and we know that you are all looking forward to some time for rest,
family and fun! While we are strong advocates for much-needed downtime, research shows that up to one
month of learning loss can take place during the summer months (Cooper et al, 2003). In an effort to
continue your child's academic progress, we have created the enclosed summer packet. We recommend that
you create a daily routine to incorporate these assignments into your child's summer activities. Completing
the required reading and academic exercises will build confidence and prepare your child to return to school
in August.
Reading
Students have one required novel, A Bri(^toTerabithia and one novel of their choice. For the required novel,
students must complete the Story Map and one project of their choice from the attached list Projects will be
presented the first, full week of school, and students will be able to take the Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz as
well.
For the novel of choice, this packet includes a list of su^ested tides. The majority of the selected books
should be in the reading range of your child's end of the year AR report. Students are encouraged to
complete a project for this novel as well.
Math
Students are expected to have mastered multiplication facts (0-12's) prior to entering fourth grade. Within
the first quarter, students will be learning 2-3 digit multiplication and long division skills. Mastery ofmultiplication facts is necessary in order to start the year successfully. Attached to this packet are
multiplication drills. Students should be able to complete 100 problems (0-12 facts) in 3 minutes. There are
many multiplication apps and online math sites which offer rehearsal of the facts as well.

This game is ployed like the memory match card game that many children ore familiar with.It is designed to reinforce their understanding of basic multiplication.
Materials:
Multiplication fact cards and product cards [pages 2-5)
Set up:
Copy the cards on card stock so students cannot see through the paper.
Cut the cards on the dotted lines.
Laminate the cards, if desired.
How to Play:
Lay all of the cards upside-down on the table and mix them up.
Players will try to flip pairs of matching cards.
example: The " 12 x 4" card matches the "48" card
Player 1 flips two cards. If the cards match, he or she gets to keep both cards. If the cardsdo not match, then the cards are flipped back upside-down.
Then, player 2 gets a turn to try to flip matching cards. Players alternate until all cards havebeen removed from the game.
When the game is over, the player with the most cards is the winner.
