The Carillon Rector’s Reflections

Dear Church,

“Every new beginning is some other new beginning’s end.”

(Seneca, Roman Philosopher)

In July of 2017, St. Andrew’s had a new beginning as we welcomed the

Rev. Deacon Gregory D. Stark to become our shared Curate with responsi-

bilities focusing upon children, youth and young adults. In the ensuing

months Greg would be ordained a priest at St. Andrew’s and serve our

parish as well as Christ Church, Oberlin for the next four years. The

generosity of God’s ministry through and with Greg has been a blessing and

a gift. (See Gratitude List in this newsletter.)

That new beginning which became Greg’s ministry at St. Andrew’s has now

come to an end and we bid him farewell as he goes to his next new be-

ginning in Belgium. St. Andrew’s also has a new beginning as we enter the

time when we transition to another minister who will have responsibilities

for children and youth. (The Young Adult ministries will be led by the

young adults who are currently involved in those ministries.)

In preparation for this transition, the Youth Minister Search Task Group met

with the Rev. Anna Sutterisch and me to discern what St. Andrew’s needs at

this time and to design the job description. It was determined that the new

position will likely be a position for a lay minister. The job title was edited

to be the “director” of ministries, emphasizing the role that the new staff

person has in recruiting and empowering parish members to use their gifts in

these ministries.

Understanding that transitions take time, I have asked the Rev. Greg Stark to

plan youth ministry activities through the end of September and to recruit

parish members to lead those activities. Children’s ministry activities will

resume at the beginning of the program year in September. Information will

be shared in the Enews and Carillon as well as with children, youth and their

families.

Rector’s Reflections – continued The Director of Children and Youth Ministries position has

been posted on “Indeed” and is being advertised in Episcopal

youth leader communications. As viable candidates are

identified, the Youth Minister Search Task Group and Youth

Ministry Commission will help me to interview and select

St. Andrew’s new Director of Children and Youth Ministries.

Vestry and parish will be informed of progress along the way.

You have heard me say that St. Andrew’s truly welcomes and

values children and youth and demonstrates that in practice

and resourcing. The number of children, youth and their

families who are integrally involved at St. Andrew’s gives

testimony to that truth. The vibrant and life-giving ministries

like Vacation Bible School are integrated into the life of our

parish and have lasting impact far beyond their schedule.

The children and youth at St. Andrew’s are not “the future of

the church” but already are the church with their presence,

involvement, sharing of gifts and participation. God’s work in

the world in and through St. Andrew’s is already happening

in and with the children and youth of our parish. It is the

responsibility of the whole parish to continue to support and

nurture God’s good work. I ask for your prayers for the person who is coming to us. I

ask for your prayers for the Youth Minister Search Task

Group, the Youth Ministry Commission, the grant writing

group (who is working to find grants to sustain this ministry)

and for me as we engage in the process of this “new

beginning.” And… I ask for your prayers for our children and

youth and their families. May we all be led by God’s Spirit as

we walk in faith and trust of God’s provision, grace and love. Blessings,

PS Thank you to everyone who has prayed for my parents

and taken on extra responsibility in the recent weeks when I

have been away helping my sisters care for them. Your

support and care has been a blessing in a trying time. My

parents both are in more stable situations now and I ask for

your continued prayers.

MESSAGE FROM THE SR. WARDEN

Amy Kellogg

I’ve been trying to find some inspiration for this month’s note to the parish, but I have to admit I have been coming up

dry. I came back from my trip to Arizona refreshed and grateful for cooler Ohio weather. I think my “vacation glow”

lasted all of 12 hours! I went back to work and it has been non-stop ever since. Nothing very inspirational there! Then

I came across one of my favorite quotes and I thought this is what I need. I need to take a deep breath and remember

that “Every day may not be good, but there’s good in every day”. No matter how bad your day is going, you can

always find something good—someone compliments you, your great niece and great nephew come running to greet

you and breathlessly ask you if you want to see all of their “boo-boos”, or you sit on your patio and take a moment to

watch the sun set. There is always something good in our days. Jesus didn’t say life was going to be a bed of roses, but

what he did teach us is that we need to find the good in our lives and in other people. Speaking of good in our lives, I

am so grateful for Rev. Greg Stark’s ministry with us. While I am sad to see him leave, I’m excited for his new

opportunity to learn and grow and pursue his passion. Thank you, Greg, for being one of the good parts of my days!

Notes from the Associate Rector The Rev. Gregory Stark

Dear St. Andrew’s family,

In his poem “The Rose,” Malcolm Guite reflects on Dante’s Divine Comedy, specifically the end of Paradiso, where

he ascends to the final spheres of heaven and encounters Divine Beauty in all its majesty. He writes, “I think of how

/ Everything flowers, the whole universe // Itself is still unfolding even now / sprung from a stem of singularity /

Which petals time and space.” Both contemporary and renaissance poets are weaving together ordinary and divine

things, connecting us all in the unfolding of eternity. But neither gets too lost in lofty thoughts or big ideas. The rose

and its petals bring us back. Back and forth between the vast expanse of interstellar space and the sliver of eternity

where we find ourselves.

I’ve been grateful for this sliver of time, these last four years caring for and being cared for by you all. I have loved

sharing not only our time, but ourselves with one another. That is the heart of all Christian ministry - lay and

ordained. As I prepare for this next step in my formation, I take with me all of the wisdom and love you have shown

me. I may be off to return to university life, but it is the parish that nourishes and models Christian charity, being

grounded in place and looking out at the neighborhood. My hope for you all is that you will continue to share God’s

love on the corner of Middle and Third, and that you will keep looking for ways to receive God’s love from our

neighbors.

At the end of the poem, Malcolm Guite turns his gaze away from the book and up towards the heavens,

remembering that the very elements that make up his body make up the stars above. I write this from a couch in

Arkansas, reminded that my priesthood and my being are bound together by the lives and witness of so many others

before and alongside and after me. I glimpse that divine spark, that Grace that precedes and upholds all things, and

feel only gratitude. For it is in giving that we receive, and it is in our presence to one another that we know God’s

presence in our midst. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

St. Andrew’s Visits Bellwether Farm – Sunday, September 12

2:45 pm - Arrive

3:00 pm - Gather/walk to Worship barn and play a game for all ages

3:30 pm - Board the shuttle/wagon for a tour of Bellwether to include the animal barns,

greenhouses, gardens, bee hives, maple sugar hut, worship barn, pond, orchards, lodging and more.

Stops will be made and time offered to pet the animals, learn from Farmer Kyle and enjoy the farm.

5:30 pm - Farm to Table Dinner ($16 p/p, children 4 and under are free. Email Rev. June Dorsey

for scholarship to help with dinner cost.)

6:30 pm - Depart or enjoy a stroll around the farm.
