LIVING OUR FAITH

Stewardship “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” - Mark 1:17 Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the parish potluck this past Sunday. It was cold and a little bit snowy but it was worth it for the great food and excellent company A few changes during flu season. The news is reporting that this is the worst flu season on record since they've been keep-ing track of it. The worst of it may not be over yet, either. We don't want Mass to be an anxious experience and for any-one to worry about getting sick while fulfilling our Sunday obligation, and we especially want to be aware of the very young and the elderly among us who are more vulnerable to serious complications if they get sick. The flu season is sup-posed to run for another 8-12 weeks, so for the next month or two we're going to forego a few optional parts of the Mass. At the weekend Masses (daily Mass won't be changed), we will only be distributing communion under the species of the Host. We also will not be exchanging the optional sign of peace in the pews (although if you want to hug your spouse or child who is sitting right next to you and give them the peace, I encourage you to “opt in”). Hopefully this makes every breathe a little easier. Stay up-to-date with last-minute announcements We have two easy ways to stay in touch during the week. The first is on our Facebook page, the second is through our flocknotes email. These can both be helpful to stay informed about what's going on here at Epiphany. For instance, this past week we used both to announce the cancellation of our Potluck. Even if you don't use facebook, you can see our updates on our website. You can also register for flocknotes at our website. Altar servers just a reminder that we're always looking for altar servers, and there is no age minimum. Altar serving is a huge help to the priest and it really does make mass go more smoothly. Mass Explanations – The Sign of Peace To really understand the sign of peace, we first remember that each and every Mass participates in the first Mass on Holy Thursday at which Our Lord himself was the priest. As Saint John Paul II wrote in his encyclical letter Ecclesia De Eucha-ristia: “Every priest who celebrates Holy Mass, together with the Christian community which takes part in it, is led back in spirit to that place and that hour.” Because of the connection of the Mass to the events of the Passion, John Paul II goes on to write, “The Eucharist...stands at the center of the Church’s life.” When Our Lord gives the sign of peace to his disciples, he does so knowing that the Cross awaits him the very next day, He knows that the peace he gives is going to be paid for and made possible by his death and resurrection. This is why, when we exchange the sign of peace, it's first of from the altar where the priest, who represents Christ, extends it to the people. Jesus is our peace, and it is only him who can give us peace. It is a beautiful, sober moment as we prepare to sing the Agnus Dei and receive the Eu-charist.

Attention: Separated, Divorced, Widowed or Remarried of All Ages

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Divine Authority Jesus drives out the unclean spirit in the man in the syna-gogue in today’s Gospel. He thus reveals His authority as being fully divine and capable of subjecting evil spirits to His power. Similarly, the psalm reminds us that it is im-portant for us to heed the powerful voice of the Lord and not to harden our hearts. When we feel moved by the Ho-ly Spirit to proclaim the Good News to another person or to do a kind act of charity, follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Seize the opportunities that you have each day to give witness to your faith in the Son of God. Use His Name to take authority in trying situations! archstl.org/dynamic

LIVING OUR FAITH

P rolife Matters On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, holding that women have a constitutional right to abortion and that the state may not limit abortions sought for the rea-son of maternal health, which was broadly defined to include "all factors - physical, emotional, psychologi-cal, familial, and the women's age - relevant to the patient."

Since Roe v. Wade, it is estimated that over 59 million children's lives have been lost to abortion in the U.S. alone - and many women and men continue to suffer that loss.

Every January, including the March for Life in Washington, D.C. events are held around the Archdiocese of St. Louis to remember all those suffering from abortion and to pray for an end to abortion in our country. Annual Memorial Mass and Prayer Vigil

Saturday, January 27, 2018 - 10 a.m. At Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis Please join Bishop Rivituso and the St. Louis com-munity to pray for an end to abortion, healing, and forgiveness for those involved in abortion, and increased respect for all human life. The offertory collection will benefit LifeLine Coalition, a group of local social service agencies whose financial and emo-tional support help more than 10,000 women facing crisis pregnancies annually. Mass will be followed by a peaceful and prayerful Rosary Procession to Planned Parenthood followed by Benediction at the Cathedral. For more information call the Respect Life Apostolate 314-792-7555 or [email protected]. March On The Arch

Satuday January 27 The Coalition For Life is sponsoring a March on the Arch in conjunction with the Memorial Mass at the Cathedral. After mass there will be a lunch at noon for those who register for the event. At 12:30 the group will meet at Our Lady of Guadalupe Convent at 4311 Forest Park Ave. the march from Planned Parenthood at 1:00 to the Old Cathe-dral. At 4:00 shuttles will return carpool drivers to the starting point. For registration and more details go to www.MidwestMarchForLife.com. Hope And Healing

“There is no grief like the grief that does not speak.” Henry Longfellow. The grief over an abortion experience is often so deep that it seems to be silent. Women and men may bear this burden for years thinking that there is no hope of for-giveness or peace. Project Rachel/Project Joseph offers free, private, professional counseling for anyone who is suffer-ing because of an abortion experience. Call Project Rachel/Project Joseph at 314-792-7565 to begin your journey of healing and reconciliation. Project Rachel For more information contact Marisol 314-792-7451 [email protected] or STLprojectrachel.org.
