Epiphany

One of the biggest feasts in Greece

When?

• Epiphany is celebrated on the 6th day of January every year

What?

• It is a large annual Christian celebration of remembrance of the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.

In this feast we also celebrate the names: Fotis , Jordan , Ourania and Fanis.

Where?

• Epiphany is celebrated by the Christians all over the world, at the houses, at the churches and near the sea

Epiphany carols that children sing at the eve of the feast.

Purification of images.

HOW?As main traditions of Epiphany are considered:

“Raising” of the Cross by swimmers in the sea. The swimmer who will first grab the Cross, will kiss it, then he/she will proudly take it around the houses and he/she will receive many prizes.

Why?

• Because all Christians would like to celebrate the Jesus’ Baptism so they want to keep in mind that special day….
