National and regional partners funding research on biodiversity, ecosystem services and Nature-based solutions
Overview of BiodivERsA approach & activities :
Detailed mapping of the European research landscape (>12k projects in the BiodivERsA database)
Calls for 160M€ (80M€ in cash) since 2008Funded research is outstanding, multidisciplinary, policy relevant and engages with stakeholders
A shared Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, (7 pressing issues already addressed)
Professional knowledge brokerage to disseminate projects’ outputs
Research mapping & co-design
Research funding & knowledge brokerage
Mapping activities to prepare a coordinated strategy – e.g.:
• Analysis of national and international research strategies on biodiversity & ES
• Mapping of biodiversity research infrastructures in Europe
• Mapping of the European research landscape (funding level, and themes)

Establishment of a Common Strategic R&I Agenda
• Involvement of funding agencies and ministries, and Advisory Board – consisting of both “scientists” and “stakeholders” related to various fields:
• European or international policy-making (e.g. EU policy representatives/advisors)
• Socio-political activities and relations with the public (incl. knowledge transfer organisations)
• Nature conservation (e.g. NGOs for nature protection)
• Habitats, species and landscape management (e.g. Natural resource and wildlife managers, hunters and fishing associations
• Domestic and wild genetic resources (e.g. Animal and plant breeders’ federations, farming organisations)
• Economic and industrial activities (e.g. large private companies, industry networks and representatives)
• Cooperation with key Joint Programming Initiatives and EU/international initiatives to identify shared priorities

6 calls already launched since 2008 for a total amount of 135 M€ …
Biodiversity: linking scientific advancements to policy and practice Biodiversity and ecosystem services, and their valuation Biodiversity dynamics: developing scenarios, identifying tipping points, and
improving resilience Invasive species and biological invasions Promoting synergies and reducing trade-offs between food supply, biodiversity and
ecosystem services
… including one jointly launched with the EC
Understanding and managing soil and sediments biodiversity dynamics to improve ecosystem functioning and delivery of services
Understanding and managing biodiversity dynamics in land-, river- and sea-scape (habitats connectivity, green and blue infrastructure, naturing cities)
BiodivERsA will continue to launch annual joint calls• Next one in 2017• Possible additional CO-FUND calls, co-financed by the European Commission• Selection criteria: scientific excellence; societal/policy relevance
