Arizona’s controver-sial SB 1070 wentinto effect on July

29, and critics of the bill tookto the streets throughout the

country to express their feel-ings and concerns regarding thebill. In San Jose, several hun-dred individuals gathered onthe corner of Story and King toprotest the bill.

Cesar Juarez was one ofthese community members

present at the protest.“I feel that this law is de-

stroying the progress our greatcivil rights leaders organized, struggled and won. It's defi-nitely against my values ofhuman rights and social jus-tice,” Juarez said. “Our com-

munities' message is our valuesof peace, love and justice. Wewant our families to be treatedwith respect and dignity. Ari-zona's SB 1070 is opposite tothese values.”

Ali Rahnoma was alsopresent at the event.

“I think Arizona's SB1070is an embarrassment to thestate. The way I understand it,that the law is an act of desper-ation by the conservatives tounite their base of support sincemost of them have grown dis-enchanted with their politicalleadership,” Rahnoma said. “Atthe same time the SB1070 isshowing the resiliency of fam-ilies and community memberswho are protesting the newlaw- this is an example of thehow the racist law is blowingup in the faces of those who au-thored it.

Brian Helmle attended be-cause he feels SB1070 picks upwhere HR4437 left off after theGran Paro of 2006 defeated itby the movement for migrantworkers' rights.

“I think it is an attempt tomake the lives of the hardestworking and most exploitedworkers even harder,” Helmlesaid. “It pushes workers whoare already forced to workunder the table even deeperinto the shadows of our society

and makes them afraid to pur-sue the resources and remediesavailable to everyone in our

communities.”Many who attended the

event also said that they plan onboycotting products producedin Arizona and attractions lo-cated in the state.

“I have always wanted tosee the Grand Canyon, but aslong as the state of Arizona hasSB 1070 or any other racist oranti-immigrant law on thebooks, they will not be gettingmy tourism dollars,” Helmlesaid. “Especially when there issupport for SB 1070 by whitesupremacist organizations likethe Minutemen and the Na-tional Socialist Movement.”

Aside from boycotting, many of those who attendedsaid they would keep fightingagainst SB 1070.

“To attend any event in SanJose that opposes Arizona'sSB1070 is an acknowledge-ment of attacks on workingpeople,” Rahnoma said. “I alsofeel that it's important to showthat such laws will not be toler-ated in San Jose, in case anyonehas the idea of introducingthem to California or any localgovernment.”

Washington, DC - News coverageof this week's ruling on the Ari-zona anti-immigrant law is re-ig-

niting the debate over comprehensiveimmigration reform and the need for a federal so-lution. But as Washington pundits analyze thepolitical implications of the judge's decision, theyare turning to outdated thinking instead of realfacts from real elections. Conventional wisdomin Washington has it that the Obama Administra-tion's lawsuit, and success this week in court, willhurt congressional Democrats in swing districtsand help Republicans mobilize their base. Onceagain, these experts prove that they have a super-ficial understanding of the politics of immigra-tion.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Direc-tor of America's Voice, "The Arizona law andWednesday's ruling only heightens the public'sdesire for a federal immigration solution. Whilepolls show the Arizona law is popular with vot-ers, these same surveys show comprehensive im-migration reform is even more popular. Thepublic is hungry for leaders in Washington tosolve this problem, and they will reward politi-cians who cut through the rhetoric to offer realsolutions."

Some points to consider about the politics ofimmigration:

· Conventional wisdom has consistentlybeen wrong: While running on a hard-line im-migration stance may work in some Republicanprimaries, it has not proven to be successful inthe vast majority of general election campaigns.Polling in swing districts and states consistentlyshows that comprehensive immigration reform issupported by a majority of voters because it is apractical solution that increases the tax base andrestores order to the system.

· The American people have complex viewson immigration, and support pragmatic ap-proaches to fixing the problem: Voters want the

problem of illegal immigration solved and wanta national solution instead of a state-by state ap-proach. A number of recent surveys have shownthat while the Arizona immigration law is popu-lar, comprehensive immigration reform enjoyseven wider support. Bi-partisan nationwidepolling conducted by Lake Research Partners andPublic Opinion Strategies found that 60% of vot-ers support the Arizona law with 23% opposed. This support for Arizona's SB1070 reflects peo-ple's frustration over Washington's failure to acton immigration reform. Even more voters--78%--support federal, comprehensive immigra-tion reform. Notably, 84% of those who supportthe Arizona law also support comprehensive im-migration reform, and by a margin of 60% to18%, voters want the federal government to actinstead of letting the states decide.

· Republicans in Washington have formed awall of resistance to working on immigration re-form, leaving states like Arizona flounderingunder the weight of a problem that must besolved at the national level. While some Repub-licans are calling on the Obama Administrationto "make immigration reform a priority" follow-ing the judge's decision, the fact is these samepoliticians have done nothing to advance theissue this year, and even refused to work with De-mocrats on a reform proposal this spring

· Latino voters are re-engaged and energizedby immigration. While conventional wisdom hasit that western Democrats in close races have themost to "lose" from the court's ruling, the exactopposite is true. Conservative voters were al-ready motivated to turn out and vote against De-mocrats this cycle. It is the Democratic base, including the crucial Latino voter group, thatneeded a reason to show up.

Judge LaDoris H. Cordell (ret.) as pic-tured above, has been on the job for a bitmore than 50 days as the new Independ-

ent Police Auditor (IPA), City of San Jose. ELOBSERVADOR had an exclusive and extensivediscussion about priorities and strategies with herthis past Tuesday. These are definitely communityoriented, with the focus on the need to engage andinvolve the youth of our community, especiallythe ethnic communities. It was distressing to beinformed that Anglosaxon men, African Ameri-cans, Asian Americans, and one Latina had ap-plied for membership to the Independent PoliceAuditor Advisory Committee (IPAAC). Its pur-pose is to provide community input and favorplans with cultural and ethnic sensitivity and val-ues. "Where are the Latinos?'asked JudgeCordell. "I am aware that Juvenile Hall and thejails have at least 65% Latino occupancy. Whereare the interested and engaged Latinos needed toformulate public policy and establish approachesand priorities which are acceptable to the verylarge resident Hispanic community now residingin San Jose?" All need to understand that the IPAis the appointing authority, which also includesthe authority to dismiss.

If you want to be an involved social changeagent, here is an opportunity to begin to do some-thing about the concerns that will create the futuresocial order desired in this community. Be in-formed that Judge Cordell is thoughtfully proac-tive in a very logical and thorough manner.Application forms for the IPAAC appointmentcan be downloaded from the IPA web site(www.sanjoseca.gov/ipa/).

As El Observador's publisher, I agreed to dosomething about the underrepresentation of Lati-nos in the IPA.s Advisory Committee which willmeet four times per year to review, monitor, ad-

dress, be informed, establish priorities, and learnabout the behavioral incidents which provide somany of Latino youth with their first police en-counter. Two year terms and an embargo agree-ment (to practice total confidentiality) arerequired. You are encouraged to apply and servebecause you will experience and learn much froma very distinguished and respected individual whois totally committed to public service.

In her first 50 days, Judge Cordell has beento many community meetings throughout the cityto inform the public that one does not have tohave an encounter with the police to have a rea-son to present a 'concern' which will be investi-gated by San Jose's new IPA. New pamphlets (inEnglish and Spanish) are already prepared; wristbands with the IPA phone number are available;and flyers are already prepared and available. The I.P.A. office is easy to access in downtownSan Jose. Its address is 75 East Santa Clara Street(at Second Street); Suite P-93 (lower level); SanJose, CA 95113, Phone 408-794-6226; FAX 977-1053; and the receptionist is a Latina who is bilin-gual (English and Spanish languages).

Staff have been oriented to a new approachwhich is designed to communicate concerns; topresent constructive commentary rather than crit-icism; to establish a community relationshipthrough collaboration and cooperation as an on-going effort to maintain peace and tranquility inSan Jose's diverse community....especially theethnic communities of Vietnamese and Hispan-ics.

The new IPA favors having individuals withcomplaints to meet face to face with the policepersonnel involved. Judge Cordell has experi-enced that approach leads to successful commu-nication and resolution of issues whileestablishing communication channels coupledwith trust.

It was very interesting that the City Councilagenda of Tuesday, August 3, 2010 had item 2.8Outside Employment Approval process. TheMayor and City Council members avoided prac-ticing a double standard when the resolution "todelegate to the Mayor the authority to approve, after consultation with the City Attorney, requestsby the IPA to engage in outside employment pro-viding mediation services." This Agenda item 2.8was approved by a vote of 9 ayes and 2 nayes(Nora Campos and Pete Constant were the 'no'votes.).

Remember that Hispanics are being soughtto serve on the IPAAC as you read this article.I.P.A. Office: 408-794-6226, open 8:00AM to5:00 PM, closed for lunch, noon to 1:00 PM

Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico's mostrecognized and influential artistswhose work has been celebrated by

many throughout the world. On Friday, July 30,MAIZ and Cihuatl Tlatocan hosted the 5th an-nual Frida celebration at Washington UnitedYouth Center in San Jose. Hundreds of Frida'sadmirers attended the event.

"To me, Frida is a symbol of struggle andfinding one's inner self about what a woman is,"said Jessica Castaneda from San Jose.

Castaneda was on hand to help out with theFrida look-a-like contest, one of several activi-ties for individuals to participate in.

Other activities included musical perform-ances, dances, and a silent action.

"The works of art for this auction were do-nated from local artists and we have over 60pieces from throughout California," saidMarisol Solorio of Maiz. "It's nice to see thedifferent perspectives on Frida.”

The goal of the event was to raise $5,000to help women who have left a domestic vio-lence situation.

"The money will help these women getback on their feet after all they have beenthrough," said Lydia Martinez of Cihuatl Tla-tocan. "These women will also learn about themany resources that are available to them."

Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacan, Mexico

in 1907. Perhaps best known for her self-por-traits, Kahlo's work is remembered for its "painand passion," and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as em-blematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depic-tion of the female experience and form.

Kahlo had a stormy but passionate marriagewith the prominent Mexican artist DiegoRivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many of which stemmed from a traffic accidentin her teenage years. These issues are reflectedin her works, more than half of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo sug-gested, "I paint myself because I am so oftenalone and because I am the subject I knowbest."

MAIZ Mujeres created Cihuatl Tlatocan, acommunity organization based out of San Jose. The committee is comprised of multigenera-tional, bilingual and monolingual Mexican fe-males. It began as a volunteer committee doingevent production and is now a mass organiza-tion organizing to address the multiple oppres-sions that Mexican females face locally andglobally.

Its mission is to foster leadership to changethe social conditions of Mexican Women usingeducation, cultural, and community action.

San Mateo, Calif. — San Mateo CountyWomen Infants and Children (WIC) islaunching an outreach campaign to encour-

age new mothers throughout San Mateo County tobreastfeed longer. The campaign – which coincides withnational breastfeeding month – will raise awarenessabout how “each additional month of breastfeeding cre-ates a stronger, healthier future for mom and baby” andbenefits the community.

“The evidence for the health benefits of breastfeed-ing beyond the first few months is striking,” said Dr.Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer.“Breastfeeding for at least six months decreases the riskof childhood obesity, asthma, and diabetes. And ex-tended breastfeeding has been shown to benefit themom by lowering her risk for obesity and type 2 dia-betes, post-partum depression, and breast, ovarian, andendometrial cancers.”

“There is no question that breastfeeding workswonders for babies and for mom,” said Anne Garrett,R.N., supervisor of breastfeeding support services atWIC. “Babies need nothing but breast milk for the firstsix months of life; and breast milk remains an importantpart of baby’s nutrition when solids begin.”

For more information about the benefits of breast-feeding longer, visit www.breastfeedingsanmateo.orgor contact San Mateo County WIC at 1 (800) 205-0333.

WASHINGTON, -- Arthritis is thesingle greatest cause of chronicpain and disability among Ameri-

cans(i) and the treatment of arthritis costs the na-tion more than $128 billion(ii) a year in medicalcare and lost earnings. Persistent, chronic jointpain determines the choices people make and lim-its their ability to perform basic tasks for them-selves and their family. Eighty percent ofAmericans either have, or know someone whohas, arthritis(iii) and these numbers continue to es-calate(iv). Women, African-Americans and Lati-nos are more disabled and have a greater incidenceof co-morbid diseases as a result of arthritis thanthe rest of the population.

The physical and economic burden of arthriticpain and disability is an important connectingthread in the dialogue about health disparitiesamong women and racial/ethnic minorities, yet itis not being widely discussed. On September 20-21, 2010 in Bethesda, MD, a first-of-its-kind Na-tional Summit, MOVEMENT IS LIFE: ANational Dialogue on Arthritis, MusculoskeletalHealth Disparities and the Health Of The Nation, will shine the spotlight on this national publichealth issue.

More than 27 million Americans suffer fromthe most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis(OA),(v) and almost 40 percent report activity andwork limitations(vi). In April 2010, the CDC re-ported that severe joint pain, activity limitation andwork limitation due to arthritis were significantly

higher among African-Americans and Latinos, even though they were less likely to report theirmedical condition.(vii) Various national health sur-veys demonstrate that women are also dispropor-tionately affected by arthritis and relateddisability.(viii)

"The compound effect of arthritis and chronicmedical conditions among women and racial/eth-nic minorities is a costly national health crisis,"said Mary O'Connor, MD, Chair of the Depart-ment of Orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic Florida andCo-Chair of MOVEMENT IS LIFE. "Under-standing the effect of arthritis on disability andphysical inactivity is critical to effective chronicdisease management in the United States."

Led by Summit Co-Chairs Dr. O'Connor andDr. Said Ibrahim, of the University of Pennsylva-nia School of Medicine and Philadelphia VA Med-ical Center, MOVEMENT IS LIFE will featurediscussion topics including the role of culture, so-cial/psychological factors and the economic im-pact of musculoskeletal health disparities. Drs.Ibrahim and O'Connor will be joined by a consor-tium of stakeholders representing primary carephysicians, orthopaedic surgeons, health advocacyorganizations, community organizations, acade-mia, faith-based leaders, community advocacy or-ganizations, nurse associations and industry. Dr.Louis W. Sullivan, MD a nationally-recognized in-dustry expert on health disparities and foundingPresident of the Morehouse School of Medicinein Atlanta, GA will deliver the keynote address. Δ

Community TogetherFor the fourth year in a row, police,

teenagers and at-risk kids have come to-gether for the wildly successful "Kick,Lead and Dream" soccer camp held atCherry Chase School in Sunnyvale. Thegoal of the program is to help kids de-velop skills both on and off the field. Asin past years it features drills, scrim-mages, motivational speakers and thechance for high school students to vol-unteer their time for a proven cause.Due to the success of the program, thecamp has grown to become a year-roundprogram serving various communitieswithin Santa Clara County.

This two-week experience broughttogether Mountain View, Sunnyvale andLos Altos young soccer stars, MountainView and Sunnyvale Police Officers, community volunteers and at-risk youthon the playing field to develop both soc-cer and life skills.

The volunteer coaches for Kick,Lead, and Dream are 14 - 17 year-oldmale and female soccer stars from localarea schools, including schools inMountain View, Los Altos, Sunnyvale,

Relacionesrotas y par ejas distanciadas o a

Afriendly game between RealMadrid and Club America gaveway to the arrival of midfielder

Sergio Canales, who started his professional ca-reer with great success.

"He's very young and has a lot to learn andgrowing up to do, but the quality is there andthe most important thing in a player is the qual-ity," said head coach Jose Mourinho. "It looksto me that he is very open and today withoutany kind of work, I just explained a few impor-tant things about the dynamic of the team andhe did it."

Canales, set up by Benzema, scored thefirst goal of the game at Candlestick Stadiumin San Francisco. It came 11 minutes beforehalf-time, but Enrique Esqueda scored at the 51minute, tying the game for 9 minutes. VicenteSanchez side-footed a goal on the hour andgave America the lead.

"A game of soccer is played when the play-ers aren't tired," said Mourinho. "In this game,Real Madrid played tired."

Head coach Mourinho really liked the wayhis team played during the first half, everythingwent smooth. Overall he was happy with the re-sults and likes playing against Mexican teams. He finds their plays positive; they don't lack

speed and are enthusiastic. "I like America because they're a team that

has a different rhythm," said Mourinho.Club America is considered Mexico's most

popular club when it comes to fan support, his-tory and quality, with the largest stadium inLatin America and fifth in the world.

"I'm happy because I've learned so muchand I'm going to keep on training and learningand working hard," said Sergio Canales.

With a debut hard to forget, Spanish mid-fielder Canales started his career with RacingSantander, but left the Primera Division side forReal Madrid, which proved to be an excellentchoice for both.

Although Real Madrid was missing inter-nationals like Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Al-varo Arbeloa, Raul Albiol and Xabi Alonsobecause of holiday leave after their World Cupvictory, the team wasn't let down by CristianoRonaldo.

Ronaldo's free-kick sealed the deal for RealMadrid, with a 3-2 win over America.

"It's a pre-season game, we won, but wedon't want to win pre-season games," saidMourinho. "We want to win season games."

America also lost to Manchester City lastweek on penalty kicks in Atlanta after playinga 1-1 tie in regulation.

Real Madrid's midfielderdebut a success

Real Madrid won 3-2 against Club America on Wednesday, August 4, in San Francisco.

When second-graders Bryce and Juli firstmeet, Juli knows it's love. Bryce isn'tso sure.

Beginning that day, and for the next six years, young Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) does everything hecan to keep his outspoken wannabe girlfriend at arm'slength...which isn't easy since they go to the sameschool and live across the street from each other.

Smart, dreamy, independent and willing to standup for what she believes in, Juli (Madeline Carroll) isdifferent from anyone else he knows and, frankly, it'sa little overwhelming. What's a guy supposed to dowhen a girl tells him his hair smells like watermelon

or wants him to sit in a tree for the spectacular view? There's just no telling what Juli will do next, andBryce is one guy who'd rather be safe than sorry.

Though disappointed by Bryce's unwillingness tosee things her way, or even to see the things in life shefinds most meaningful, Juli continues to give her po-tential dreamboat the benefit of the doubt. Until thosedoubts stack up so high that she finally thinks maybeshe was wrong about him.

It's just about the same time Bryce starts to thinkmaybe he was wrong about her, too. But is he toolate?. Δ
