Process Overview:

Thissimulationmodelwillhelpinunderstandingtheprinciplesofaliquid-liquidextractionsystem,usingtheproductionofglacialaceticacidasanexample.Thesimulationmodelconsistsofanextractioncolumnandadehydrationcolumn.Themainfeedtotheextractioncolumn,abinaryliquidmixtureofaceticacidandwater,entersthecolumnatthetopasacontinuousphase. Ethyl acetate is used as a solvent to separate acetic acid from the acetic acid-water mixture and enters the column at thebottomasadispersedphase.Intheextractionprocess,aceticacidispreferentiallytransferredfromthefeedtothesolventethylacetateascomparedtowater.Thesolventrichphase,calledextract,exitsfromthetopoftheextractioncolumn,whilethewaterrichphase,calledraffinate,exitsfromthebottomoftheextractioncolumn.
