2018 sees the 21st year in environmental management. 20 years of continuous improvements and coverage of env. issues in many env. statements lie behind us. We are proud of so many achievements among them a couple of examples also for others. We keep on going!

We have adapted our env. certification to the new standards of ISO 14001:2015 and EMAS 2017. The check of our documentation was successfully passed already in December 2017. By publishing this validated env. statement this process is now concluded.

To handle the many regulations is already a challenge but to observe them as well is one step beyond. We are therefore glad that a Compliance Audit conducted by five external auditors and taking nearly two weeks was passed in 2017 with much praise from their side. In particular the way we keep track of the terms of env. permits and legal obligations was appreciated. The audit also covered the new specifications for water-hazardeous substances and for cooling water hygenics for which we showed sustainable concepts.

Also our env. telephone (see imprint) for internal and external communication with regard to env. issues is well accepted. This is reflected by the feedback of those seeking contact and the rising number of phone calls.

We are also proud of our internal audit system in place since 20 years. Audits are „oral examinations“ in administration and on the shopfloor. By regular trainings we take care of a good preparation and organisation of audits considering always the latest regulations. By a regular exchange between all auditors we set the outcome of audits on a firm basis.

When it comes to environmental issues we have already mastered many particular challenges. This also applies

to improving energy efficiency. More and more we need to take into account changing marginal production conditions and markets. These impacts are increasing and our adaptability meets certain limits.

2017 was a year with a couple of challenges for ALUNORF. Unplanned downtimes at production lines led to lower than plan shipping volume. This is one of the reasons why we failed to further raise energy efficiency. Time to think and conduct an in-depth analysis in order to plan the next steps carefully. This is high on the agenda for 2018. Nevertheless, a nearly 24% increase of energy efficiency against 1990 still remains extraordinary. To keep this level is and will be a difficult exercise we will face in 2018.

After 24 years in service our commercial managing director Thomas Geupel went into his well-deserved retirement. Mr. Geupel has always intensively followed our environmental management and many of our example-setting projects.

Since December 1, 2017 Mr. Oliver Hommel is our new commercial managing director with his colleague Mr. Stefan Erdmann as technical managing director. In 2018 we will go for improvements and optimisation of processes, with safey, environment, sustainability, quality and customer satisfaction in the centre of our efforts.

We must make use of recognised potentials for improvement and also tackle the subject of digitalisation.

Evolution instead of revolution – that is the new motto. New developments in the markets and competition from the Far East ask for other parameters, fine-tuning and minor changes of directions.

This also applies to environmental topics. For more see the following pages of this environmental statement.

Managing directors: Stefan Erdmann and Oliver Hommel

Main adjustments in 2017Nothing is as constant as change...

As a result of the certificate basis changed from the version 2004 to 2015 and EMAS regulation revised in 2017 (in short EMAS 2017) we have reviewed our env. policy and the env. management system. The focus is on contextual and process analyses and the pertinent adjustments of our process descriptions. Audit and review processes in 2017 were already conducted acc. to the new requirements.

The supplier management puts more emphasis on the assessement of env. relevant suppliers‘ importance and criteria. With regard to life cycle assessments our shareholders (partners) themselves are in the focous of the new requirements. They supply all kinds of aluminium basic material for our production and supply themselves our products to their customers. By doing so they also decide which env. requirements we need to follow in our env. management.

Enviromental management system

What‘s new in our env. management system?

The env. department continues to be responsiblle for env. management. It is directly subordinated to the technical managing director and pools the functions of env. management officer and the inspectors for immission protection, water protection, waste and hazardeous goods.

The env. department is the first contact when it comes to external and internal env. communication (by email and env. telephone, see imprint). It channels expectations, interests and binding obligations for Alunorf.

Experts define this as contextual analysis. It fixes and prioritises all env. issues with regard to potential new objectives. On the other hand there are the process analyses of the top management (managing directors and senior managers). To establish the annual business plan both analyses are opposed and actions for improvement in the next year derived taking into account risks and opportunities. At the end of each year we take stock. The calendar year is also our business year.

The figure on the right hand side shows the control loop of the env. management revised in 2017. It is based on the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 and EMAS 2017.

The abbreviations P – D – C – A stand for Plan – Do – Check – Act.

Leadership is the central process connecting everything. Proper planning, appropriate organisation and target-oriented execution are the core activities that matter.

Without system it does not workHow we manage environment It is the right plan that counts

The env. programme summarizes the current projects for the protection of the environment in form of a catalogue. Each env. target is allocated to an env. topic (see coloured env. symbols above).

Project either fall into the category „energy“ or „environment“. Each env. target is measurable and is identified by a number.

If no quantifiable targets can be set the successful execution of the project is regarded as target achievement.

In each env. statement we report on the status of our env. programme. Projects that were terminated in previous years are taken from the programme, new ones added. The chronology results from the successive env. statements.

OutlookAfter 20 years of successfully realised improvements, a certain saturation level seems to be attained in particular with regard to energy consumption. Further efficiency gains are superposed by other factors with some that cannot be fully influenced. Currently we strive to maintain the level reached. We will focus on process improvements (column in the middle – figure on the left hand side) but that needs to be based on detailed and sound data. Process analyses and new energy reports shall be the starting point for further improvements in order to recognise controllable indicators and derive potential targets from them.

The environmental statement 2018 of ALUNORF is the secound updated version of the environmental statement 2016. It was submitted to the accredited environmental auditor Dr. Ulrich Hommelsheim.

In parallel the certificate was adapted to the standard ISO 14001:2015 and reviewed for potentially new requirements from EMAS changed in 2017.

Each year we conduct comprehensive internal environmental audits to ensure that within a three year‘s period every department is audited at least once.

Along with our updated register of relevant environmental impacts, the analysis of context, data and facts from previous years, the audit reports form the basis for a management review to check the

environmental strategy (env. policy acc. to EMAS), the env. management system and the continuation of our targets in the environmental programme.

Major parts of both environmental strategy and environmental management system were adapted to the new binding obligations of ISO 14001:2015 and EMAS 2017. The presentation of our current targets is part of this environmental statement 2018.

The consolidated environmental statement 2016 is now updated for the second time. All versions are declared valid by an environmental auditor and published on our web page. A new consolidated environmental statement will be published in 2019.
