BCM’s rail environmental services division has devoted teams in place, many with over 20 years’ experience, having dedicated their careers to delivering a long-term contract on the rail infrastructure.

The specialist division prides itself on its unique methodology developed over two decades of committed service to the rail environmental services sector and has established techniques and equipment that enable them to deal with the removal of graffiti and clearing of litter promptly, primarily working on this long term contract with Network Rail as a Principal Contractor.

All teams are equipped with specially fitted vehicles to cope with the varying nature of these works, which can include high-level graffiti removal from overbridges and structures.

As part of this service BCM operate a 24/7 all year round call-out service and offer a fully managed, delivery service in respect of works around track possessions and planned railway closures. In the rare cases where the rail infrastructure is compromised, BCM have the relevant expertise in place to implement an emergency closure (T2X) to remove the issue as promptly as possible. All waste removed from our activities are disposed of, or recycled in accordance with current environmental legislation and our own zero waste to landfill target.

• removing graffiti from structures and buildings, including overbridges and substations

• clearing of litter from the railway infrastructure such as stations, pedestrian/level crossings and access points to a Grade A standard.

• cleaning out trough and duct routes

• removal of fly tipped materials

• provision of qualified protection/isolation staff for works during track possessions

• provision of a 24/7 call out team to tackle offensive graffiti and litter affecting the operational railway

Throughout the years, BCM have been consistently challenged to find ways to improve efficiencies. Some of these have been around developing new smarter techniques. Others have been about developing equipment to meet the needs of a demanding, growing rail infrastructure.

At the heart of BCM’s offering has been training and development, in order to maintain two decades of continuous and appropriate environmental industry service. Examples of daily challenges include:

• developing safe and efficient solutions for removing graffiti on high level structures some of which sit over public highways

• working in confined spaces and areas that are difficult to access

• specialist waste and litter containing dangerous contaminants and sharp objects such as needles and asbestos

• providing sufficient water to complete the power washing of structures and buildings and for site welfare purposes

Additionally, the scope of services has increased from litter and graffiti removal to other specialist environmental service provisions including vegetation and weed control, asbestos removal, noise mitigation and environmental and ecological mitigation services.

In order to achieve sustained and continued success, BCM has developed its services and trained its staff to the highest levels.

• all staff are National Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) trained and fully competent to manage and organise road closures. Traffic management is also undertaken by BCM competent operatives

• the team has developed specialist sub-sectors of operation and received training to be able to recognise and develop solutions for vegetation, noise and ecological mitigation and has a long-term supply chain partnership in place for safe and effective asbestos removal

• BCM have also developed a unique van mounted access platform to allow speedy completion of high level works and to minimise impact on road and rail users

• operatives are fully trained and equipped to deal with hazardous materials and sharp objects

• BCM has fully trained its staff to enable them to implement emergency T2 railway closures and have fully qualified possession and isolation staff

• all teams are equipped with on board water facilities that can be filled at BCM depots around the UK before attending site
