W hat is a solar island ?
A solar island uses solar energy to heat thewater running through the pipes which is heatedto produce steam which in turn is used to
generate electricity. It is a concept for tapping low-cost solar energy
at very large scale.
The aim of the project is to validate a concept for
the large-scale transformation of solar energyinto hydrogen and electricity at very low costusing floating ³Solar Islands´.

CSEM has developed this concept of ³Solar Islands´ for Production of Electricity and Hydrogen
A prototype of such a solar island, equipped with
thermal solar panels, is to be built and tested inthe desert of the United Arab Emirates.
CSEM and its Emirates subsidiary have beenassigned the task of implementing the project bythe Ras Al-Khaimah Investment Authority(RAKIA). The project is being managed by theCSEM Centre in Alpnach

W hy solar energy? This concept is used because the potential of solar energy is at least
one hundred times larger than any other renewable energy source (as
shown in pic below) :

W orking of solar island
It uses a concentrator that heats water running through pipes;the steam generated is what produces electricity.
And, since it's floating, it would be easy to rotate--keeping itfacing the sun all day for maximum efficiency.
The patented technology uses mirrors, as opposed tophotovoltaic elements, to reflect the sun onto black, water-filled pipes. As the water heats up it turns into steam which isthen forced through a turbine on land to generate electricity.
The prototype is being tested out first on land in a shallow
pool of water. Using hydro dynamic motors, the entireplatform is designed to be able to follow the course of thesun to gain maximum energy which it can stock for later use.

T ypes of solar islands
There are two types of solar islands:
1. Solar Islands floating on water
2. Solar Islands on Ground

Solar island floating on water
In this case, the easiestway to construct it is todesign it as a sphericalplatform, which isformed by a swimming
ring (typically made of pipeline tubing) over which the membrane isextended and whichcan be turned very
accurately by means of hydrodynamic motors(spaced for instanceevery ten meters).

Solar island on Ground
 Using a special
construction on land,
one can use exactly thesame principle as
described before.
 In this case, a channel
has to be built, filled with
water or oil, in which the
Solar Island can float
just like on the sea.

Advantages
The efficiency of the high temperature solar conversioninto electricity is estimated to be around 10%
Water, needed to generate hydrogen and cooling isreadily available in abundance.
In international waters, prime locations are open to allnations
The platforms can ³follow the sun´ with a 15% efficiencygain.
Near the equator where the solar irradiation is veryintense solar energy can be tapped efficiently.

Conclusion
During the next decades, the generation of sustainable energy will become one of themain challenges of our civilization . In view of
this, the start of this evolution is becomingeven more urgent, already today. Anysolution for a future global energy supplymust base on direct solar energy conversion
at large quantities. The solution proposed bythe centre is to build artificial islands
