Declared product / Declared unitThe declared unit is 1 running metre (rm) of a steel road restraint system, including the foundation.

This Declaration is based on the Product Category Rules:Safety barriers, 07.2014 (PCR tested and approved by the SVR)

    Issue date22/11/2017

    Valid to21/11/2022

Scope:The declaration applies to 1 running metre of a steel road restraint system including the foundation, which is produced by ArcelorMittal.

The Life Cycle Assessment is based on data collected from the ArcelorMittal plants involved in producing the road restraint system (Bremen in Germany, Ostrava in the Czech Republic). The owner of the declaration shall be liable for the underlying information and evidence; the IBU shall not be liable with respect to manufacturer information, life cycle assessment data and evidences.Verification

    Product

Product description / Product definitionThis Environmental Product Declaration refers to a single-sided safety barrier including the foundation, containment level H1W4A (Brand Name JSAM-M/H1) which is pictured below. Containment levels are defined according to /EN 1317-2:2010/.

The declared product consists of several steel

components (i.e. barrier strips, posts, spacers and beams) that are individually cold formed and then assembled together by means of bolts and screws. This includes the foundation parts which connect the barrier to the ground. For the placing on the market in the EU/EFTA (with the exception of Switzerland) the Regulation /(EU) No 305/2011/ applies. The product needs a Declaration of Performance taking into consideration /EN 1317-5:2007+A2:2012/AC:2012 Road restraint systems/ and the CE-marking.

ApplicationSteel safety barriers are road restraint systems designated to redirect and/or contain errant vehicles safely or to avoid vehicle impact with a more resistive object and reduce accident severity, for the benefit of the occupants and other road users, including pedestrians. For the application and use the respective national provisions apply.

  • 3 Environmental Product Declaration ArcelorMittal – Single-sided Safety Barrier - containment level H1W4A

Technical DataThe performance under impact of the products has been assessed according to the test methods described within /EN 1317-2:2010/. CE Declaration of Performance has been released for each product in accordance with the specifications outlined in Annex ZA in the /EN 1317-5:2007+A2:2012/.

Base materials / Ancillary materials The parts of each barrier are made of different steel grades (HX340LAD, HX420LAD, S250GD, S350GD /EN10346:2015/) with metallic coating Magnelis© ZM310 (/EN10346:2015/). These steel parts can have various steel thicknesses, ranging between 2.8 and 8 mm.

Detailed steel and coating properties and chemical compositions are available at http://industry.arcelormittal.com/catalogue/E35/EN.

The base material of road barrier systems is iron. Alloying elements are added in the form of ferro alloys or metals. The metallic coating includes zinc, aluminum and magnesium.

Reference service lifeUse phase (B1-B7) is not declared in this EPD. A reference service life for road barriers is not declared, since the lifetime will depend on specific designs and applications, as well as environmental conditions. The durability of the product, including the foundation design, is ensured by galvanizing components according to /EN10346:2015/.

    LCA: Calculation rules

Declared UnitThe declaration refers to the functional unit of 1 running metre (rm) of safety barrier including the foundation, as specified in Part B: Requirements on the EPD for Safety barriers.

Declared unitName Value UnitDeclared unit 1 rmConversion factor to 1 kg 0.0316 m/kg

System boundaryType of the EPD: cradle-to-gate - with options. Module A1-A3, Module C3 and module D were considered. Modules A1-A3 of the structural steel production include the following:

The provision of resources, additives, and energy

Transport of resources and additives to the production site

Production processes on-site including energy, production of additives, disposal of

production residues, and consideration of related emissions

Recycling of production/manufacturing scrap. Steel scrap is assumed to reach the end-of-waste status once it is shredded and sorted, thus becomes an input to the product system in the inventory.

Module C3 takes into account the sorting and shredding of after-use steel, as well as the non-recovered scrap due to sorting efficiency which is landfilled. A conservative value of 1% landfill is considered. Module D refers to the End-of-Life of the road barriers, including reuse and recycling.

Data qualityAll relevant background datasets are taken from the GaBi software database /GaBi ts Software/. Regarding foreground data, this study is based on high quality of primary data, collected by ArcelorMittal.

  • 4 Environmental Product Declaration ArcelorMittal – Single-sided Safety Barrier - containment level H1W4A

The GaBi-database contains consistent and documented datasets which can viewed in the online GaBi-documentation /GaBi ts Documentation/.

ComparabilityBasically, a comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the data sets to be compared were created according to /EN 15804/ and the building context, respectively the product-specific characteristics of performance, are taken into account.

    .

LCA: Scenarios and additional technical information

Steel road barriers are 100% recyclable. According to the /European Commission Technical Steel Research/ and the /German Ministry of Environmental Affairs/, 99% of the used steel is regained after dismantling, thanks to the magnetic properties of steel. The assumptions for the end-of-life for this study is based upon a collecting rate of 99%, taking into account 1% going into landfill due to unforeseen losses after the removal of the steel road restraint systems. Note: 0.75 kg scrap is used in the manufacturing of 1 running metre (31.62 kg) of steel road restraint system. After use, 31.30 kg steel is recycled. The potential environmental benefit calculated for the end-of-life stage (module D) is based on the net amount of scrap in the system: 31.30 kg – 0.75 kg = 30.55 kg. The system has a net output of 30.55 kg scrap (which carries a potential credit), thus module D shows an environmental benefit.
