Policy is a rule or decision about how to act or deal
with problems.
Environmental policy is both the official rules and
regulations concerning the environment that areadopted, implemented, and enforced by the
government agencies, as well as the general
public opinion about environmental issues.

CONVENTIONS1971-Convention on wetlands of International importance (RAMSAR)
-protects wetlands, especially as waterfowl habitat
1972-Convention to protect world cultural and natural heritage
-protects cultural sites and natural resources
1973-Convention on International trade in endangered species (CITIES)
-restricts trade in endangered plants and animals
1979-Convention on migratory species (CMS)-protects migratory species, especially birds

-bans shipment of hazardous waste
1992-Convention on biodiversity (CBD)- protects biodiversity as national resources

-rolls back carbon dioxide production in industrialized countries
1994-Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD)
-provides assistance to fight desertification, especially in Africa

Endangered Species Act (1973): Is designed to protect and
recover endangered and threatened species of fish, wildlife and
plants in the United States and beyond. The law works in part
by protecting species habitats.
