Environmental data Data sheet

General

The RTU500 series telecontrol equipment family has been de-signed to meet the requirements for environmental conditionsand performance of network control, substation automation sys-tems and process industries.

The telecontrol systems RTU560, RTU540, RTU520 andRTU511 and its products manufactured by ABB are type tested. They fulfill the requirements specified and described. The RTUsmeet and achieve the requirements listed in the following tables.

The requirements can be put into the following categories:

Electrical interfaces:– Power supply and insulation– Electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC)

– Immunity– Emission

Environmental conditions:– Temperature and humidity– Mechanical influences– Safety

Performance requirements:– Reliability, availability, maintenance– Time quality for process signals

Electrical interfaces

The immunity and emission tests are made according to the re-quested IEC standards. The list of tests needed for the RTU500series is taken from the IEC 60870-2-1 standard. The RTU fulfillsthe requested level, specified in IEC 60870-2-1.

The rules for cable routing and grounding have strictly to be ful-filled, to reach the requested level. This has to be taken into con-sideration for engineering and commissioning.

Environmental conditions

The tests were made with a typical RTU560 telecontrol stationin a standard cubicle (IP 55 / DIN 40050). RTU540, RTU520 andRTU511 are tested without cubicle. The functionality was per-manently verified during and after the tests, with typical 60 %active input signals.

The shock values express a shock strain, which may occur dur-ing transportation.

The results of the vibration and shock tests are mainly influencedby the used cubicle and mounting methods. The test results arevalid for the RTU560 standard cubicles and mounting methods.

Reliability

The reliability of a RTU500 series is calculated on the base of atypical RTU station. The size is the experience of several hundredsupplied substations.

The calculation for RTU560 is based on the following data:

– 48 analogue measured information (AMI)– 100 single point information (SPI)– 64 double point information (DPI)– 8 integrated total information (ITI)– 80 double command output (DCO)– 1 command supervision board (1 out of n)– 3 sub-racks with power supply– 1 FSK modem

The typical reliability for such a substation is approximately33.000 hours. The reliability is defined by a serial structure. Thismeans a failure of one board/unit is defined as a system failure,

even if the other boards are operating well. The calculation isshown in Fig. 2. This sheet may also be used for calculation ofany other RTU560 configuration.

For RTU540, RTU520 and RTU511 also typical configurationsare selected (see Fig. 3 to see "Fig. 5: RTU511 Reliability Val-ues").

The mean repair time (MRT) of a RTU500 series will be typically1 hour. The RTU500 series concept has several supervision anddiagnostic capabilities, which assist the debugging and mainte-nance activities, when needed:

– Permanent online diagnostic of all I/O boards– LEDs on all boards indicating internal/external errors– None or only a few configuration settings onboard neces-

sary– PC based diagnostic tools

The main telecontrol transmission protocols are based on formatclass FT1.2 (IEC 60870-5-1). In addition, the transmission pro-tocol allows for commands the ‘Select and Execute Command’strategy, which essentially decreases the residual information er-ror possibility in command direction.

The performance of time separating is given by the time syn-chronization quality of the network control system. The RTU500series has the possibility to be synchronized via communicationlines from the Network Control Centre (NCC), by sntp or by aDCF77 or GPS clock. The scan cycle for binary input signals is1 ms, executed by the microcontroller on each input board. Theboards are synchronized by the communication unit (CMU) ofthe RTU560. This allows a time resolution within a station of 1ms for binary inputs.

The overall accuracy for analogue signals is given by the totalerror of the 23AE23 analogue input board. For the real overallerror of the analogue output board 23AA21 see the hardwaredata sheet.
