Energy transfer

• Webster's defines Energy as the vigorous exertion of power or the capacity of acting or being active.

• But, its more than that.• We learned how energy transfers between the

environment and organisms. • We discovered the three methods of Abiotic and

Biotic energy transfer.• Abiotic: conduction, convection, radiation• Biotic: Producers, consumers, and decomposers.

Energy & Environment

• Energy transfers shape the environment?• But, organisms can affect their environment in

various ways:• Organisms compete for specific parts of the

environment.• Humans depend on the environments.• Humans impact the oceans, lands, and the air.• This affects all organisms living in the different

environments.

Competition for Energy

• All organisms compete for resources such as water, light, space, and food.

• Competition affects populations and can lead to extinction.

Human dependence on Oceans

• Humans depend on the water cycle to bring evaporated ocean water inland as rain.

• We use this water to drink and grow crops.• Organisms also depend on light, soil, and temp.

Human impact on Oceans

• Humans impact ocean systems through contaminated groundwater run off carrying fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals.

Human impact on Oceans

• Humans impact ocean systems through the use of natural resources: oil drilling and commercial fishing.

Human modifications on Oceans

• Humans modify and change ocean systems through their activities.

• Creating artificial reefs, underwater structures, for the purpose of improving marine life and to control beach erosion.

Human impact on Air• Humans impact the air by releasing emissions

from factories and burning fossil fuels.• Sulfurs, nitrogen, and carbon emissions create

acid rains on land and in the oceans. These lead to green house gases and global warming.

Interdependence

•All organisms are interdependent on each other and their environment.

Page 11: Environmental Changes affecting Organisms. Energy transfer Webster's defines Energy as the vigorous exertion of power or the capacity of acting or being

Survival of the Fittest

•So, how are organisms affected?

Page 12: Environmental Changes affecting Organisms. Energy transfer Webster's defines Energy as the vigorous exertion of power or the capacity of acting or being

Environmental Changes

• Organisms are affected both short term and long term.

• Short term affects: population numbers decrease.• Long term: inherited genetic traits can change or

mutate.• Organisms who can adapt to changes survive,

those who cannot become extinct.• All organisms have an Interdependence among

other living systems.

Living Systems

•Energy forms and shapes the environment •Gives life to all organisms•Organisms affect the environment and energy transfer.
