Natural CleanersEco-All Purpose SpraySquirt some dishwashing liquid into a spray bottle of white vinegar. The vinegar’s antibacterial and antiseptic properties combine with the detergent’s cleansing action to make a cost-effective all-purpose cleaner.

Cleaning WindowsWindow-cleaning is a job for cool, cloudy days, so the sun doesn’t dry the windows too fast, causing streaks. While there are many window-cleaning formulas on the market, the most effective is simply a squeeze of dishwashing liquid in a small bucket of warm water. Apply the water vigorously with scrunched-up newspaper, working first in circles, then up-and-down and sideways to remove dirt thoroughly while avoiding streaks.

Natural Soap Scum RemoverJuice six lemons and pour the strained juice into a spray bottle. Apply the lemon juice thoroughly to your tiles, glass and fixtures. Rinse off and wipe dry. Your shower will be sparkling clean and smelling fresh and fragrant.

DIY Furniture PolishIf you want your timber furniture to gleam without the expense of commercial furniture polish, make your own polish by combining 2 cups of olive oil with the juice of one lemon. Test the polish on an unobtrusive area before use. Apply with a soft cloth onto hardwood furniture for a natural shine. This mixture must be used once it is made - do not store it. Left-over tea is another excellent natural furniture polish as the tannic acid in the tea removes residue while giving a lustrous finish. Place three or four black tea bags into a cup of boiling water and leave them to steep while the water cools. Wipe the tea water over timber furniture using a soft cloth.

Emerald Ash BorerSigns of InfestationTree decline including:• thinning crown• diminished density of leaves• evidence of adult beetle feeding on leaves• long shoots growing from the trunk or branches• vertical cracks in the trunk• small D-shaped emergence holes• S-shaped tunnels under the bark filled with fine sawdust

Contact the CFIAIf you see suspected signs of infestation on your ash trees or if you plan on moving firewood (e.g., when camping, relocating or managing a woodlot), contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) by visiting inspection.gc.ca.

CompostingBenefits of CompostingOrganic wastes, such as food waste and yard waste, make up 25 to 50% of what people throw away. Composting can significantly cut down on the cost of garbage collection and reduce greenhouse gases. Mixing compost into your soil makes for healthier plants and a better environment.

What to CompostKitchen GreensFruit scraps, vegetable scraps, houseplant cuttings, coffee grounds, rice & pasta, egg shells, tea bagsKitchen BrownsCoffee filters, stale bread, paper napkins & towels, dryer lint, hairYard GreensPlant & hedge clippings, flowers, vegetables, grass (small amounts)Yard BrownsLeaves, straw or hay, small twigs/chips, dried grass, weedsDon’t CompostMeat, fish, bones, dairy products, oils or fats, sauces, ashes, pet waste, diseased plants, mature weeds with seeds

Leave Those LeavesRecycle your leaves to protect your yard from harsh winter climates. Leaving a blanket of leaves will feed your lawn, trees, shrubs and plants during the winter. Leaves will replenish important nutrients back into the soil.

Boy Scouts Compost SiteResidents can drop off yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, plants)at the Compost Site located on Concession 14 beside the Landfill Site. Brush is not permitted.

Residents are reminded not to deposit leaves on the municipal roadways.

Easy Household Fertilizers Bananas - Bananas provide the potassium that plants need for proper growth.

Coffee Grounds - Used coffee grounds contain nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash. Dried grounds are useful on evergreens, azaleas, roses, camellias, avocados, and fruit trees.

Cooking Water - Water that is used to boil potatoes, vegetables, eggs, and even pasta can be used as a fertilizer. Just remember to let the water cool before applying it to your soil.

Egg Shells - Egg shells contain nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and other elements that make them a practical fertilizer. Simply crush them, grind them in an old coffee grinder, and sprinkle them around your garden soil.

Epsom Salts - Add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt to 1 gallon of water and put into a sprayer. Apply once a month, directly to the foliage for a quick dose of magnesium and sulfur.

Wood Ash (From Your Fireplace or Fire Pit) - Ashes supply potassium and calcium carbonate. Don’t use ash in areas where you are trying to maintain acid-loving plants – the ashes are alkaline and can increase alkalinity in the soil.

Gelatin - Gelatin is a great source of nitrogen and great for houseplants. Dissolve in water and water your plants once a month with gelatin.

Green Tea - A weak solution of green tea can be used to water plants every four weeks.

Reduce The Risk Of Frozen Water Lines This WinterWe want to remind residents to take measures to reduce the risk of frozen water lines and meters this winter. We suggest the following:• Winterizing your water meter will prevent damage from

freezing.• Regular inspections of the meter help to prevent any

potential material damages.• If it lies in a non-insulated meter pit, protect it by using

polyurethane or expanded polystyrene slabs. Make sure the protective frame and cap are tightly secured and the cover is closed.

• Protect both the meter and the pipes from exposure to cold drafts.

• Ask a licensed plumber or supplier about materials to insulate your pipes and meters. If your meter is in an unheated garage, make sure the meter is insulated.

• Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.• Seal air leaks in your home and garage.

Do Not• Do not use moisture absorbing materials (straw, textiles,

paper, glass, wool) to insulate.• Do not use an open flame or pour hot water on meter if it

freezes.• Do not completely turn off the heat when it is cold.• Do not solely rely on the Town’s curb stop to completely turn

off the water supply to your residence. Always verify that the flow has been stopped.

During Extremely Cold Weather• Open kitchen, bathroom, and laundry cabinet doors to allow

warmer air to circulate around the plumbing during cold weather.

• If you feel your lines are prone to freezing in extreme temperatures, you might want to consider running a small stream of water from your tap. This will be at your expense.

Save On Your Water Bill• Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the

faucet run until the water is cool.• Wash fruits and vegetables in a basin. Use a vegetable brush.• Do not use water to defrost frozen foods; thaw in the

refrigerator overnight.• Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the

dishwasher; wash only full loads.• Add food wastes to your compost pile instead of using the

garbage disposal.• Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water

level or load.

Winter Road SafetyParking Restrictions For Snow ClearingBY-LAW 51-2013 - Prohibited ParkingIn accordance with BY-LAW 51-2013 - “No person shall park a vehicle on any highway (street) between the hours of 2:00 am and 8:00 am commencing November 1st and ending on March 31st, in every year. Any vehicles obstructing traffic or interfering with snow removal operations will be issued a ticket or removed at the owner’s expense.

Placement Of Snow On Municipal Right-Of-WaysResidents of the Town of Saugeen Shores are reminded that, pursuant to Section 181 of the Highway Traffic Act:“No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in writing to do so from the Ministry or the Road Authority responsible for the maintenance of the road R.S.O. 1990, s181.” Deposition of these materials on the roadway interferes with property maintenance practices. Your attention to this Act is required to assist us with keeping the roads maintained in a safe and useable condition.

Road ClosuresHighway Traffic Act, Section 134 Driving on a closed highway is prohibited. “Where signs or traffic control devices have been posted or placed under subsection (2), no person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle on the closed highway or part thereof in intentional disobedience of the signs or traffic control devices.” Please obey road closure signs at all times.

Green Light AwarenessDo you know what it means if you see a vehicle with a flashing green light in its window? The flashing green lights you see in the front window of vehicles means those drivers are part-time firefighters on their way to an emergency. If you see a vehicle with a flashing green light, please be courteous and yield the right of way.
